CJH's liner for the first out in the T9th summed tonight up pretty well...overall the effort was better. There's still 4-5 guys that need a reset, but I'm looking forward to Game 3 (even though OkStU's starter is filthy).

actually scoring one run summed up this team. Looking forward to game 3? Why?

Couple of thoughts-should have stolen Baker on the 1st P of Marlow's AB

Like clockwork, need to hit better.  Cannot leave runners on base as much as we have.

At some point these players need to take some sort of ownership of their performance.  As Slim and JohnStark mentioned earlier, the players need to perform.  Pitchers need to do better, fielders need to do better, baserunning needs to be better and hitting needs to be better.

I figured we'd drop this series before the conference season started, so I'm not surprised with the outcome.  I am, however, worried about the way we lost both games.

Got one more tomorrow, and hopefully we can get this turned around and get out of Stillwater with one W.

This isn't a good team.

Maybe it turns into one but it isn't one today.
This is the key.  IMO, they're struggling to play as a team.  They're talented top-to-bottom.  They can be really good.  They just need to figure it out.  Unfortunately, they can't seem to get into one of those rhythms where things are all clicking.  Hitting is contagious.  Just need a few guys to find it and it will carry on to the others.

FINAL: Oklahoma State 3 – Texas 1

After dropping a gut-wrenching, 18-inning affair in Game 1, the Longhorns bounced back with mixed results in Stillwater on Saturday evening. Ultimately Texas lost 3-1, but several players showed signs of improvement. The defeat results in a Big 12 series loss, the first of the season for the Horns.

Texas hit groundballs and line drives early, but stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two innings. Tres Barrera broke a scoreless tie with a homerun to left field in the top of the third frame with two outs.
However, that was the lone run of the evening for the Horns, who only managed three hits in the final six frames. In total, Texas stranded nine baserunners on the night, giving them a two-game total of 29.

Starter Chad Hollingsworth struggled with command early, elevating too many pitches. The Cowboys took advantage, answering Barrera’s blast immediately with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning. The next inning catcher Bryan Case hit a line drive homer to left field, scoring David Petrino, and giving the Pokes a 3-1 margin they never relinquished.

Freshman Kyle Johnston was a bright spot for the Longhorns. Johnston threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out five Cowboys. With the loss, Hollingsworth falls to 3-3 on the season.

The bottom half of the Texas batting order accounted for five hits, but Brooks Marlow, Collin Shaw, and Ben Johnson were a combined 0-11 without drawing a single walk. Marlow stranded four more runners on Saturday, giving him a total of seven left on base in the first two games of the series.

POST-GAME

Augie Garrido

On the recent lack of production with runners in scoring position: â€œA lot has been done to try to give them the confidence to take the at-bat with nobody on base. If you have the runners in your head then you can't be fully focused on the ball which is really all you can do as a hitter. If you look around at how many balls we hit hard, on a line, especially to the opposite field – the total is none. Well that means you're not staying on the pitch and you're pulling off of it which is a result of trying too hard. When you see what we're doing right now, we're in front of the off-speed breaking ball so we swing through that one, and then we're late on the fastball. So that is about rhythm and timing and that's what happens when in fact you're trying too hard.”

On capitalizing on offensive opportunities: â€œIt's very elusive. We're getting hits – we had the same number of hits they did – the problem is we're not scoring runs with productive outs, we're not getting many baserunners, we're not giving ourselves very many opportunities. We really had pretty good pitching. It's just about run scoring and being able to get the runners on base and capitalize with timely hitting and we're not doing that.”

That 2-game total of 29 LOB is a bit skewed when you consider that yesterday's game was 18 innings. That breaks down to a respectable 1.07 LOB/inning.

Had high expectations for the team this year, and not just being a superfan. Really thought they would put it together with all of the pitching on board. Not sure what's happening with the lack of hitting and minimal run production. I hope Skip doesn't roll out of Austin before having the opportunity to be HC at The Disch.

Good point on the context of the 29 LOB. But that has to be balanced against only 4 total runs in those 2 games/29 innings. When you add that to the equation, then 1 LOB/inning is significant.

No doubt.
