Texas officially announces coaching staff

What are you talking about man? We were one win away from winning the Big 12 with an offense that had no identity and was horrible. How can you say we can't win the conference without a high scoring offense, when we almost did it this year with a crap load of injuries. It's like you are finding things to be negative about. Give Strong a chance, and then criticize.
We were one bad call away from losing to Iowa State. We were one 4th down call away from losing to West Virginia. Thinking that we let a hard fought victory slip through our fingers against Baylor and we almost won the conference is absurd.

I am looking forward to next season as I have almost every season. I am thrilled we no longer have the mediocrity of Mack, but let's be honest. Right now, a lot of coaches in he Big 12 are sighing in relief we didn't put together a high-powered staff to run our offense.

Gundy knows what Wickline is going install better than Wickline knows it. Even Holgerson knows it better than Wickline. Stoops has no doubt he can shut down what Wickline is going to try to install. Phil Bennett isn't worried. We aren't about to do anything on offense multiple teams in the conference aren't already doing better with people who have shown they know how to run it. Watson isn't bringing anything Stoops hasn't shut down every time he has seen what Watson has to offer. Same with Gundy. We are installing an amateur run version of what Holgerson and Gundy have been running for years. Its not a new scheme to defend against, especially when its not being run at its optimum.

We are starting to sound full aggy. Talking about what we "almost" did.
As also "almost" got beat by Iowa State. And West Virginia. We were much closer to 6-6 than we were to winning the conference last season.
Actually this isn't true. We were one win away from the conference title. That's closer than 6-6.

Look, being concerned about Charlie Brown and his coaches seems strange to me. The last 4 years have been nothing but lamenting about Mack Brown and how bad he was.

Can this group of coaches be any worse?

What I like is Patterson and Strong are LEADING! They are puncturing the rotten culture we have had for all these many years. Surely you have to like this?

The way this reads nobody save chad Morris or someone big 12 dcs had never seen before and how no idea how to defend would satisfy what you are looking for. It's about execution and coaching more than wrinkles and fancy plays. The big 12 is not a great conf full of powerhouse teams. Texas didn't have the leadership, direction, culture or coaching last year yet was still competitive overall in the conf and nearly won it

Texas has gone out and hired a strong head coach who is going to flip things upside down in Austin. To each his own but there is a lot more reason for optimism with this new era than pessimism

Hey, Auburn didn't beat people this past year with fancy plays. I get that. My issue is that whatever Wickline is going to serve up, Gundy, Stoops, Briles/Bennett, Holgo and probably Kingsbury have already thought through. Plus, if you are an offensive recruit wanting to play for a coach who has proven he can serve up a big time offense, you aren't going to pick Texas unless you are a lineman. Any skill player worth anything is going to avoid Texas, at least for the next few years until Wickline proves he knows what he is doing. Jerrod Heard doesn't want to be on a team that grinds out 10-7 wins. I hope I am wrong, but I get the feeling Heard, Catalon, Lorenzo Joe, Armanti Foreman and the rest of the offensive skill position recruits are having their phones ringing like crazy right now.

It may turn out just fine, and I hope it does, but a lot of coaches are sighing in relief that Strong whiffed at putting together a big-name team to run the offense. At the very least it gives the other teams a couple of years of recruiting advantage on offense over us and pretty much relegates Texas to depending on 3-star Miami players to drive our offense. There are a lot of happy coaches right now in Norman, College Station, Stillwater, Waco....

We can't win in-conference without offense. Charlie wants to win games 10-7.

Before the earth stops spinning, and the sky falls, let maybe take a second and talk some facts.

Last season Louisville averaged 35.2 points per game. That would have put them fourth in the Big XII in scoring, and only .3 points a game behind Tech. In total 25th in the Nation in scoring, with a strong defense is going to win a lot of games.

If Charlie is not wanting to score points, why would he hire an OC from Okie State, who only outscored Louisville by 3.9 points a game?

One other thing, it's a sad day when my knee jerking ass has to be the voice of reason, so get it together.

While I'm not overly thrilled with the offensive staff, I do think we will have a OSU type offense if Wickline is calling the plays. Couple with with a stout Charlie Strong defense and I think there are good things ahead. I also think recruiting wise, kids will buy into the offense we will put on the field in the future.

Per Brian Davis = 100% speculation and goes against what Strong said at his introductory press conference.
I agree. Who the hell is Brian Davis anyway?

When did Strong ever indicate anything close to that?

if Strong wants to score 10 points a game he doesnt hire Wickline and make him OC or want more of a uptempo pace on offense.

Ha, great minds think alike. I wrote nearly the exact same thing in a post just ahead of this..

Yeah strong says uptempo and wants to run the ball. have to be able to line up and also punch someone in the mouth. there is your identity

For those worried about the play calling capabilities of Wickline, This from Travis Haney (ESPN)

Max Olson@max_olson<small class="time" style="font-size: 12px; color: rgb(187, 187, 187); position: relative; float: right; margin-top: 1px;">21m</small>

RT @TravHaneyESPN I asked a coach about Yurcich during fall. "Doesn't matter," he said. "Wickline's the one calling plays."

From Strong's press conference....

"We want an uptempo offense"

We want to be very aggressive"

"...wide open...."

" ....an offense that can score points..."

WTF is all the bellyaching about? Where the hell does that translate to wanting a 10-7 game?

Some people on this site are amazing.

Good grief! Most posters on this board said they would have preferred Briles over Strong and yet, what new offensive scheme was Briles going to bring that all the other Big 12 coaches didn't already know? What amazing new offensive scheme was Saban going to bring with him? Having some innovative, new, never seen before offense in the Big 12 never came up when discussing these coaches.

Let's be consistent here for once. Didn't we all agree that the downfall of Diaz was his desire to out scheme ya on defense with his innovative blitzes, etc. instead of just beating the man in front of you and playing sound football? I mean really...you would think Wickline has spent the last 9 years being the OL coach for Air Force or something. I can't imagine he could be a major piece of the puzzle, as it pertains to the OSU offense, and not know how to run it now given the chance.

Let's wait and see.

board is fast becoming an anti-Strong site. When he wins, and he will win, I hope all the haters here eat their words.

Guys, I love ya'll, but the whining is a bit too much for me right now. We haven't seen anything from the team, we have a quarterback coach that coached the quarterback who will probably be drafted at #1, and all you can do is whine like a bunch of teenage girls. I am really sorry that Coach Strong didn't hire the coaches that met your criteria, but I am going to have to step back for a while.

The next time you want to complain about your wives or girlfriends, please read over this thread.

Later, fellas, I have some knitting to do.

Hook 'em!

Lol this thread is pure comedy.

You guys realize that Louisville, without any decent running backs, we're in the mid 20s in both total and scoring offense.

Research a little before you go scorched earth.

It's not an anti-Strong sentiment. It's stunned disbelief that when tasked with building the best possible staff, Strong chose an O-Line coach who literally hasn't called plays since Ronald Reagan was President to run the offense, Shawn Watson, a two-time Big 12 cast-off with virulent anti-Texas sentiments and Koenning-an aggy cast-off who hasn't put anyone in the NFL in recent memory, if ever. This is that staff offensive recruits are supposed to believe is their first choice over playing for Briles, Sumlin, Stoops, Gundy or Kingsbury?! This is one of the best staffs in college football?! Maybe so, but until it's proven on the field, a lot of us are going to be skeptical.

There just trying to argue just for the state of arguing. ..
