Fewer playoff games at AT&T stadium this year
AT&T Stadium -- the home of the Cowboys -- will not host any high school football playoff games until the fourth round (state quarterfinals), Amy Foreman told SportsDay in an email Monday. Foreman, the Cowboys' event operations coordinator for The Star, said that is because of other stadium conflicts.
Foreman said the Ford Center at The Star -- the Cowboys' new headquarters in Frisco -- could potentially host playoff games each of the first five rounds, depending on matchups and teams' availability. That would be all the way through the state semifinals.
AT&T Stadium will host the UIL state championship games Dec. 14-17. The state title games return to Arlington this year after being held at NRG Stadium in Houston last season.
Last season in the first round of the playoffs, AT&T Stadium hosted a doubleheader on a Friday night and a quadrupleheader the next day. Three of those games involved Frisco ISD schools, with Lone Star playing Prosper, Wakeland facing Wylie and Frisco going against Lovejoy.
The other first-round games at AT&T Stadium last year were The Colony vs. Wylie East, Fort Worth Boswell against Birdville and Grapevine playing Denton.
Euless Trinity's streak may be in jeopardy
Euless Trinity has made the playoffs 18 consecutive seasons. That's the fifth-longest active streak in the Dallas area, trailing only Celina (22 years in a row), Skyline (22), Highland Park (21) and DeSoto (20).
But Trinity could be eliminated from the playoff race Friday if it loses to Flower Mound and two other things happen -- Flower Mound Marcus beats Trophy Club Byron Nelson, and Hebron beats Lewisville. That would clinch a playoff berth for Flower Mound. Flower Mound Marcus just has to win Friday to earn a playoff spot.
If Trinity wins Friday and Flower Mound Marcus beats Byron Nelson, that would put Trinity alone in fourth place in District 5-6A. Trinity could then make the playoffs in Week 11 by beating Marcus or having Byron Nelson lose to Hurst L.D. Bell.
Southlake Carroll and Hebron have already wrapped up playoff berths in District 5-6A, but the district could have a crazy finish that involves a lot of tiebreakers. There could still be a four-way tie for second place, or a five-way tie for third place.
Playoff Craziness Anyone? Imagine this
Now that four teams from each district make the playoffs, a lot of crazy things can happen. That includes teams that are 1-7, 1-8 and 0-8 still having a chance to earn postseason berths with two weeks left in the regular season.
Plano West, 1-7 overall and part of a four-way tie for fifth place in District 6-6A with a 1-4 district record, is still alive in the playoff race. To get in, Plano West would have to win its last two games (against Plano and 6-2 Denton Guyer), have Wylie lose its last two and have McKinney win its last two. And McKinney would have to beat Wylie by at least 17 points.
Plano West, Wylie and McKinney would then be tied on head-to-head and on the points tiebreaker. So a coin flip would determine which of those three teams earned the final playoff berth from District 6-6A.
In District 5-5A, Denton Braswell is 0-8 and has been outscored 351-58, but it hasn't been eliminated from playoff contention. Braswell could win its last two games (against Wichita Falls Rider and 8-1 Denton), Wichita Falls could win its one remaining game, and Rider and Sherman could both lose their final two.
That would leave Braswell, Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls Rider tied for fourth place. And if Braswell beat Rider by at least 15 points, they would be tied in the points tiebreaker and have to have a coin flip to decide the district's final playoff berth.
In District 11-5A, Conrad is 0-8 and has been outscored 306-26, and Thomas Jefferson is 1-8, but neither team has been eliminated. Conrad could win its last two games (against Kimball and district co-leader South Oak Cliff), Thomas Jefferson could win its one remaining game (against Hillcrest), and Kimball could lose to Conrad and beat Hillcrest.
That would leave Conrad, Thomas Jefferson and Kimball tied for fourth place. They would be tied on the points tiebreaker if Conrad beat Kimball by at least 14 points, so then a coin flip would decide the district's final playoff team.
In District 12-5A, North Dallas is 1-7, but it could finish alone in fourth place and make the playoffs. For that to happen, North Dallas would have to win its final two games (against Adamson and district leader Woodrow Wilson) and Molina would have to lose its last two (against Seagoville and Adamson). That would mean that North Dallas would finish 3-3 in district and Molina and Adamson would both finish 2-4.
