**Texas Baseball Preview vs UNLV FR-SU**

Baker, Clemens bros, Cantu/Tres and Boswell will be fun to watch from a fielding perspective. Not sure there's many teams in the country that will be better defensively.

A few more notes, some from Augie's media availability yesterday and my own thoughts mixed in for good measure:

  • Freshmen-Tyler Rand (OF) Kody Clemens (3B) Chase Shugart (P) and Nolan Kingham (P) will be players to keep an eye on in the short term.  They will all get time on the field with Rand & Clemens starting on Friday, while Shugart and Kingham will both be used in closer roles.  There is also a good crop of freshmen available in the dugout.
  • Redshirt guys-immediate impact guys would be R-FR Kaleb Denny (OF) R-SO Morgan Cooper and R-SO Bret Boswell (SS).  Keep an eye on R-FR Tate Shaw (INF/UT) R-FR Chance Callihan (P) and R-FR Parker Joe Robinson (P)
  • Leadership-A team that has only three seniors on the roster will look towards a few of the younger guys to step up in a leadership role this year.  This will be a huge key to the success of this team.  Coach Garrido is turning to R-SO Morgan Cooper and JRs Tres Barrera and Josh Sawyer to take the reigns and keep the team focused on the goals and objectives while away from the ballpark.
  • Offense-Coach discussed how this year's team will look at the Kansas City Royals as a model for offense.  Garrido says, "Put the ball in play, and be unselfish offensively and score runs."  He's also looking for more contact from the hitters, especially given the way DFF is a pitcher's ballpark.  Aggressive baserunning starts with putting the ball in play and avoiding strikeouts.
  • Pitching-This will be a huge strength of the Longhorn 2016 squad.  Augie says we could see as many as 12 pitchers this weekend, which speaks to the depth of this staff, as well as the confidence that Skip Johnson and Augie have in them.  This is truly a luxury.  Look for Texas to use many pitchers in different situations early in the season during the non-conference matchups before settling on a firm rotation.
  • Defense-Another big strength of the team this year will be defense.  Cantu and Barrera could be full time starters for just about any other D1 school at catcher.  Both have cannons on their shoulders and are smart, defensive-minded catchers.  Both Clemens boys manning the corners are going to prove solid.  Kody Clemens at 3B means that Bret Boswell moves to SS where he's more comfortable and is a more natural position for him.  The platoon of Joe Baker and Jake McKenzie at 2B will fill out the IF.  Outfielders Tyler Rand and Patrick Mathis will sandwich the 2015 Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player Zane Gurwitz in CF.

If this team can get some momentum going early and often from the offense, I think we'll see a very good year, and will surprise a lot of the national pundits who have Texas ranked extremely low right now.

A few more notes:

Augie has said that Chase Shugart (FR) will start off the season as the planned closer for the pitching staff.

A tentative lineup for Friday was also released today.

Gurwitz CF

Boswell SS

Mathis RF

Tres C

Cantu DH

Clemens, Kacy 1B

Clemens, Kody 3B

McKenzie 2B

Rand LF
Chase Shugart!!! Been touting his praises ever since the fall! Great Kid as well!

Keep this in mind, pitching depth is a strength for Skip Johnson, Cooper's arm will be more valuable in May then now.
So true, and this year he may have the deepest staff in recent history. Don't forget that Travis Duke, Kyle Johnston, Tyler Schimpf and Jon Malmin all return to this staff with experience.

Yeah, which is why I find it interesting so many people are down on Texas coming into the season.

Texas can be a terrible hitting team this year and they are gonna win quite a few games with as many arms as they have. Texas is absolutely loaded on the mound.

No need to put much stock into these preseason rankings. They're, at best, a guess. While a lot of the national guys put these out there, the information available to them is extremely limited. You have fall scrimmages, media days and that's it. Most of what they have are the statistics from last season, player addition and subtraction, and coach-speak. We will know what the Top 25 looks like around the second week of conference play.
What I like about what Augie has done schedule-wise is that he has not put together a schedule of cupcakes. Of the five non-conference series, three (UCLA, Tulane & Cal) were in the post season, and Stanford is a team that has traditionally been a post season participant. Mix in away single games vs the ags and Houston, you have five teams that were in the CWS last year. UNLV has some solid talent and are a scrappy ball team that will not lay down.

Compare that to some other top ranked schools' non-conference schedules, Florida only has Miami and Florida St. in non-conference series; Louisville has only Ole Miss; ags have only Pepperdine plus the game vs UT; Vandy has only Radford; Oregon St has only San Diego St.

Think of it this way, Texas could be the Pac12 champ heading into Big 12 play. ;)

Seriously, folks can fault Augie for different things, but putting together a solid non-conference slate of games should be considered in the many things he does very well. The team will no-doubt be battle tested by the time we get to Big 12 play.

Interesting start to the season.

UT Arlington upsets #8 Oklahoma State.

Old Dominion upsets #10 NC State.
