Well you can certainly say that Patterson is his own man.

We all wanted the culture & entitlement issues to cease at Texas, we just didn't expect it to start with BMD's that hire Patterson. Neither did they.

I like Charlie Strong. However, the BMD's thought they set Patterson up to hit a grand slam and they feel like he bunted when the bases were loaded.

I know for a fact that there are some BMD's that are in favor of the hiring Charlie Strong. I have been told that having a black coach to rival Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin on the recruiting trail was a big topic of discussion for some.

Personally I'm intrigued by this hire. Strong was not my first, second or even third choice but, as long as Strong takes advantage of the salaries Texas will offer for the assistants on his staff and he brings in some heavy hitters on the recruiting trail, I don't see why Strong and Texas will not be successful.

Good post. I have similar thoughts.

These next few days/weeks are critical. He must make Homerun assistant hires.

Sure hope so. So far I am less than enthusiastic about this hire.

I'll wait to judge though. Only time will tell.

Ok McPhaul you are sounding chipper this afternoon and you written report looks like mine. Hook'em

Great response McPhaul.

I think the only people that got played were the BMD's when they thought they hired another puppet in Patterson. Their will has been acquiesced to way too much over the on field success of the teams.

Patterson should be his own man, he's been highly successful in the sports world, and his judgement should be trusted more than those who put egos and access over results.

I hate that the BMDs in favor only seem to like him because of his race.
Which leads more to the thought the BMD's need to shut-up and get out of Bellmont.

Two different groups of people saying two different things.

One group saying he is bringing his staff. The other says he will hire new guys minus a few select ones. What are you hearing?

How does SP not get the correlation between the BMDs and the Board of regents? The guys he just ignored will be his boss.

The correlation only decreased temporarily because of Perry

Burton claims the staff being discussed are home run type hires, with one guy on the current Texas staff being retained.

My guess is he doesn't care. Steve loves UT, being an undergrad and law degree guy. If he ultimately loses his job, then it will be on his terms and not others. It's refreshing to have an AD that can stand up to the BMD's as they mainly serve their own egos.

I heard that Strong is bringing Bedford and the LB coach for sure.
Great. We all saw how much better the LB's played when Robinson started coaching them. Akina was a great DB coach for a long time in the pre-spread days where you could play more man. However, strict man doesn't work in today's Big 12. I look forward to new ideas brought in by Bedford, who also happens to be a Longhorn himself.

I for one have begun to embrace the situation. Both Patterson and Strong will be highly motivated for this to work out. That should transfer to the staff and down to the players. I don't think Texas will be considered soft anymore. With the right OC and recruiters, (remember, that Suddes and staff are still familiar to the current recruits and those we are pursuing) Strong has a chance to rapidly change the culture and start off with a bang. The Big 12 is still not a super power and as we saw this year, it is up for grabs by the upper 3-5 teams which Texas should be. We all would have been happy with Muschamp a few years ago. Strong has a very similar track record as an assistant (could argue better and certainly longer) and he has successful HC experience with 3 Bowl wins out of 4 years (Muschamp did not).

I realize that Texas "should" be above hiring 3rd or 4th choice types, but it's a reality with timing and such (Mack and Powers really nut punched us all). Also the fact that the power players bicker and fight like a bunch of spoiled little children. Texas could have done a lot worse in a new HC. Change is what we demanded and as we all know, "be careful what you ask for". I believe it will surprise many how well this will work out.

Texas Strong Baby!!!! Who's with me?

No one said the only reason they liked him is because of his race. Not sure how you came to that conclusion?

This does not sit well with me for some reason. Not what you wrote Darrell, just their mindset, thought process if you will. Thank you for your thoughts

He's not bringing his staff. Will probably bring Bedford as his DC and his LB coach and strength coach.

I would have to think that he would bring in an entirely new offensive staff.

You have not got the slightest clue what you are talking about. The "BMDs" are not a monolith. A large group of them had the courage and determination to finally stand up and insist on long overdue changes in the UT head coach and AD. Were it not for them, UT would be still limping along in the pathetic mediocrity of MBTF. They are worthy of gratitude from every true UT fan. They trusted Patterson to do a thorough search and use their and UT's resources to hire the best available head coach for UT. They are EXACTLY right to be disappointed that Patterson passed on much better alternatives than Charlie Strong. These people are all successful professionals and they clearly they misjudged Patterson's temperament, competence and professionalism. Patterson proved himself to be unworthy of their respect and confidence. That is the reality no matter how much you want to rant to the contrary.

I have gained a lot of respect for Patterson through this process. He will own this decision and made it clear that no matter how thick your wallet is, that doesn't qualify you to decide the future of Texas football.

That said, I agree with you about Strong. He's not your A list type option because of his name but if you don't think that he'll change the culture at Texas, you simply don't know much about football. This is a guy who has had to make his own way against politics that were not in his favor. He did that through hard work and determination and he'll expect the same from players wanting to wear burnt orange.

His staff hires are critical so I'm on a wait and see approach with that. However, from day one, the mentally weak players will be weeded out and the physically weak will be demanded along with others to raise their game to see the field.

If this works out, how thankful will we be that Foley turned down Strong multiple times and took Muschamp off of our hands?
