I'm restating the obvious for most here, but as CS is filling out his coaching staff, I think it's worth repeating:

We pay coaches a big premium because we can't pay the players. If we could just give $500k cash to a 5* recruit, we would. Since we can't, we hire the best coaches money can buy and tell the recruits that they'll receive the best possible coaching and best possible development at our school. Everyone talks about the "great facilities", but nobody ever made the NFL due to the quality of the gym and dining room. When we're talking access to resources, we're primarily talking about the ability to bring in the best coaches.

I know this isn't exactly happening. But if CS brings his entire coaching staff over from Louisville, then he's wasted the opportunity to leverage the "resources" of UT. Instead he'll have brought in the resources available to a school with only $28M in football revenue to the 40 acres.

Yes we've got a better brand and a built in recruiting advantage that needs to be better leveraged, but the reason you pay Saban $7M, is because coordinators, coaches and players all want to be associated with him and it becomes a virtuous cycle of always being able to get first pick of everything. CS needs to kick start this process as much as possible. Ultimately, winning is needed, but starting by transplanting the entire Louisville staff is a slow way to go about it.

We didn't need a splash hire for the media and BMDs, but we do need something to sell to recruits and if we don't bring in coaches (particularly an OC) that gets recruits excited we could be in rough shape. Frankly, none of our targets were even remotely considering Louisville, and other than location, I don't know why we think they'll beat down our door to play for the Louisville coaching staff just because they've moved to Austin.

I still really like CS, but I'm starting to see this turnaround as a much longer term project than it needs to be.

Really? How did all those high price coaches work out at Texas the past four years?

I don't know why we can't just wait to see the product o the field before we say we missed opportunities.

I absolutely agree with this. We all know what we saw the last 4 years but none of know what the team will look like come kickoff in August, The spring game will give a glimpse but I don't think it will be a true representation of the final product for next year. #Texasstrong

Why wait when we have the money....Hire the best, but what I have been hearing it "aint" happening.

Charlie Strong obviously believes in multiple people on his staff and wants them. You hired Strong to run the program so let him run the program as he sees fit

all this crying over the staff when results are not even know is getting silly.

Expecting to hire a coach and him not to bring in some of his guys and or hire people he has connections too and feels comfortable with makes no sense.

You cant just hire a guy - hand him a list of acceptable staff and thats what he has to choose from. It doesnt work that way

Charlie Strong is an excellent coach and he should be able to surround himself with the staff he wants

He obviously thinks these coaches are better then non-experts on a message board

Strong wants his own coaches - so just tell him no and FORCE a staff on the guy because it fits some list of ranked coaches?

Might as well just fire the guy if you arent going to let him run the program as he sees fit. We are 2 days in

How many of you have actually be around a football program..not watched it and gave money to it, but actually have had the opportunities to see how coaches interact, and the trust and familiarity they have w one another. It's almost a symbiotic relationship between a coach and his coordinators. They have to have a feel for their coach. I don't want Watson, but don't burn the coaches office before he's even in it.

So, your argument is that if we just throw money at the problem, it will all go away? We've tried that approach. Instead of over-paying assistant coaches, why not find ones who are looking for a bigger stand to showcase their abilities and give them the opportunity to prove themselves.

There are no quick fixes for the program. We have to let Coach Strong assemble his staff. "Leveraging our brand" or "leveraging resources" isn't the answer. The answer is leveraging wins. Coach Strong understands this is a huge opportunity for him as a coach. He is unquestionably considering anything any of us could consider and also thing we haven't even dreamed of. He has had conversations with people we will never meet. He knows the situation and he will make his decisions. If you think he is in over head and lack the ability to make reasonable decisions, call Red McCombs and ask him if he wants to have a beer and kvetch. From what I understand, Red doesn't have a lot of friends at the moment. He might appreciate your call.

Let.the.man.do.his.job. He took over on Monday morning. It's barely lunch time on Wednesday. In my book, that's a little early to hit the panic button because there haven't been any visible results. Anyone Coach is talking to about joining the staff is going to have to have discussions with family and others before accepting. I am sure Coach is talking to a number of recruits committed to Texas as well as other programs. Let him do his job and check back with what's going on in a few weeks. It will all be ok.

Not suggesting we strong-arm him into hiring or getting rid of anyone. He should have full latitude to make those decisions, I just don't happen to agree with the approach we're seeing so far (agree that we're reading tea leaves a bit).

I like what he pulled together with the Louisville resources at his disposal, but I'd expect him to upgrade a few parts now that he has the opportunity.

When you become the HC at Texas, you can hire whoever the hell you want. Until then, let CS hire who he wants.

Nobody is impeding CS's ability to do his job and I'm certainly not hitting the panic button. If CS is checking message boards today instead of calling recruits we're screwed anyway.

We're just a bunch of fans indulging each other's ideas and opinions for entertainment. If we were good at waiting, we'd all log off until September.

what is "starting he virtuous cycle" mean? I'm sorry, but while not every word has to be correct, it is just the basics.

Now, on to your actual post: I agree that if you're given the green light to hire anyone, that you very much should consider all possibilities. At the same time, in the end it should be the HC's job to hire who he sees fit. If he sticks with those he's just been working with, then in a sense there is going to understandably be more and closer observing by others to see if it works out.

One thing I keep reading is people making comments like "he's bringing his whole staff from Louisville," etc. Yet, it's obvious that at least two, possibly more, Longhorn coaches will remain. So I guess those comments are just exaggerations out of frustration. But, again, we need to let this play out a little more before running to the ledge to start considering jumping.

Come on man...that we can buy anybody stuff has been proven wrong over the last 3 weeks. Just because we have a big checkbook does not guarantee we get the guy you might want. Let's stop with the "we have more money" so we'll get whoever we ask. While the least offensive of Red's drivel the last few weeks, it is still a statement that not only isn't true but advances the perception that Texas is arrogant and out of touch.

There is a different way to look at all of this as well and that would be through Strong's point of view.

He has a staff that he has worked with the last few years and he knows how they work and what they will due in certain situations. This staff has helped him get to a point where Texas, one of the very top jobs, has come calling.

So now he is here in a pressure cooker of a job wanting to prove that he deserves to be here or he will not last long. You know that he knows he will only get so many years to prove himself, especially which some of the public reaction from fans and BMDs alike.

Now his options are to find a top notch OC guy that is... a. not thinking that there next stop is a HC position and b. that he trusts to run the offensive side of the ball without guidance. I know from our standpoint that it seems obvious that we should go out and get one of the big names, much like when we were wanting the big splash at the HC level.

His other option is to start with someone who he knows and trusts. Someone that has helped him get where he is. Now we can all look at the guy and say, meh, or whatever. However he looks at the guy and sees someone that has helped him with a Heisman level QB and a really great record at a lower tier school.

If you can imagine he has a ton on his plate just trying to get recruiting started up, a whole new offense, defense, etc. installed and not to mention just to figure out what he has on the team talent wise. He has no clue, outside of a few, who are a. the best players at each position and b. who fits his criteria as a tough player.

Bringing in someone who he has never worked with at one of the two major positions is a tough pill to swallow on top of all of that.

Do I wish we were bringing in a top OC? ABSOLUTELY! Am I thrilled with Watson, if that is who it is? Not so much.

However I am willing to accept that Charlie has WAAAAAY more riding on this that we do as fans. I am sure he is trying to make the best decision for him and this team at this time and place.

All we are really qualified to do at this point is discuss and apparently whine about it ;)
