I'm restating the obvious for most here, but as CS is filling out his coaching staff, I think it's worth repeating:
We pay coaches a big premium because we can't pay the players. If we could just give $500k cash to a 5* recruit, we would. Since we can't, we hire the best coaches money can buy and tell the recruits that they'll receive the best possible coaching and best possible development at our school. Everyone talks about the "great facilities", but nobody ever made the NFL due to the quality of the gym and dining room. When we're talking access to resources, we're primarily talking about the ability to bring in the best coaches.
I know this isn't exactly happening. But if CS brings his entire coaching staff over from Louisville, then he's wasted the opportunity to leverage the "resources" of UT. Instead he'll have brought in the resources available to a school with only $28M in football revenue to the 40 acres.
Yes we've got a better brand and a built in recruiting advantage that needs to be better leveraged, but the reason you pay Saban $7M, is because coordinators, coaches and players all want to be associated with him and it becomes a virtuous cycle of always being able to get first pick of everything. CS needs to kick start this process as much as possible. Ultimately, winning is needed, but starting by transplanting the entire Louisville staff is a slow way to go about it.
We didn't need a splash hire for the media and BMDs, but we do need something to sell to recruits and if we don't bring in coaches (particularly an OC) that gets recruits excited we could be in rough shape. Frankly, none of our targets were even remotely considering Louisville, and other than location, I don't know why we think they'll beat down our door to play for the Louisville coaching staff just because they've moved to Austin.
I still really like CS, but I'm starting to see this turnaround as a much longer term project than it needs to be.
