Sonny Cumbie and Texas

Ah ok.

Thought for a second Traylor left.  Hope he stays.

No, he's talking about the addition of Hurtt. That would mean the departure of Brick Haley on the defensive side.

I think Traylor understands whoever the next OC hire is if it be Cumbie or Gilbert he will not be "THE GUY" and thus will not get the final say nor any credit if the offense does improve.  Everyone outside of UT will give credit to the new hire .   Traylor wants to be a "College Head Coach and UTSA will give him a great opportunity as the OC to move towards that goal than staying with UT  in his present position.  If he has UTSA offense performing at a high level in their conference doors will begin to open up for him quickly.
If Traylor thinks UTSA gives him the best chance to move up the ladder, then he needs to do it. He's one year removed from being a high school coach, and he's not ready to be an OC at a Power 5 Conference school. He seems to be doing a nice job on the recruiting trail, but I wouldn't say he's totally killing it.

Sirhornsalot didn't you call the Horns upset of Baylor?  I looked a little for your post but did not find it.  Great call.

Yes I did and a couple others here as well. Total shot in the dark though lol

Saw something on one of the sites about assistant coaches that made sense to me.

Said it's a actually good thing when your assistant coaches are getting jobs at other schools. Said you want position coaches who aspire to be coordinators and coordinators who aspire be head coaches. The theory is they are more motivated because they're wanting to improve and move up the coaching chain.

Strong, in post game conference, emphasized he needed to recruit "the big guys up front, that is where it all starts".  I guess that was probably an ice breaker for Clint Hurtt.  Haley hasnt been impressive on the recruiting trail, other than Roach I guess.

As for MBHorn's post he said the entire offensive staff and some defensive staff.  I was concerned at first thinking Traylor left but he meant Strong will end up replacing everyone from the original offensive staff.

Traylor being at meeting with Cumbie could mean Traylor gets Co-OC with Cumbie getting play calling or Traylor is recruiting Cumbie  ;)

Perhaps, but could also simply be that Traylor will be remaining and that Traylor/Cumbie are more or less birds of a feather.

One of the sites reported that Traylor and Cumbie have a good relationship/friendship from Cumbie's time recruiting kids at Gilmer. If that's the case - I expect Cimbie had a pretty good idea of the type of arrangement Strong was going to offer well in advance of tonight's meeting.

Don't know that Cumbie would do a Co-OC type of arrangement - but I have to believe that if we want Traylor to stick around we're going to need to offer him real influence is shaping the offense and gameplans.

I wanted Traylor to be the play caller from the get-go if/when Strong canned Watson during this season. The problem now is that Traylor wouldn't be the "splash hire" that everyone is looking for, while Cumbie would satisfy the majority of the masses. I agree with HipHop that "... if we want Traylor to stick around we're going to need to offer him real influence in shaping the offense and gameplans."

Chip Brown on the meeting -- http://www.scout.com/college/texas/story/1620312-charlie-strong-makes-his-first-pitch

He thinks Cumbie's decision pyramid goes like this --

"1) TCU - He's put in two years to help build it and has QBs on the way with Kenny Hill coming out of a redshirt.
2) OU - Baker Mayfield returns, and if OU has another season like 2015 in 2016, Cumbie's the hot head coach candidate.
3) Texas - Being the offensive play caller with a lot of young talent - and turning things around - would be enormous. The downside of things not turning around is significant.
4) A&M - See No. 3"

He thinks the backup plan is Tulsa co-OC Sterlin Gilbert --
"Gilbert, who has extensive ties to Texas, ran the offense for Tulsa coach (and former Baylor OC) Philip Montgomery this season, helping the Golden Hurricane average 35.9 ppg in a 7-5 season as junior QB Dane Evans completed 63 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,958 yards with 22 TDs and 8 INTs....."

FWIW, Lotus is saying Cumbie said yes and is taking some time to notify TCU and the team first.

i'm sure he will wait to see if tcu counter-offers, if chip's pyramid is correct.  what better way to get a raise than an offer from a conference rival; life is good for the cumbie household.  i wonder if UT will be allowed to up the offer if tcu meets the original offer.

If Meacham is staying at TCU, they won't have the clout to match UT imo

Yeah - I'm pretty sure TCU is at the tope of the pyramid only if Meacham is gone and TCU can offer the OC title outright to Cumbie.  As mentioned in Chip's article, money isn't going to be the determining factor - the most important thing might be what is the best job to get him closer to getting hired as a HC.

I don't think Cumbie is going through all of this to negotiate a raise from TCU - and even if he was, there is no way TCU comes close to paying him what Texas is prepared to offer.
