SMU 'intrigued' by Mack Brown

too much pressure. UM HAS to beat ohio state and compete on a national stage. SMU has to compete in something called the AAC, or be bowl eligible.
Mack was what...7-9 against OU?

Just like Texas in the early 90's, what Michigan needs is a leader to "put all the BB's back in the box". He'd raise the talent level and win a hell of a lotta games if UofM invested in him as a 10-year solution.

Plus we would get to watch Mack vs Greg Davis every year as unbiased spectators.

10 year solution? he's 64, right ? obviously i have no clue it he's even remotely interested in coaching, but if it was me i'd prefer to cruise through my golden years in less of a pressurized gig.in a state where i already have some ties.

Disagree, if your talking about Mack Brown from 1997 to 2009 that's one thing. Michigan is still a good job and I doubt they would want to hire the Mack Brown from 2010 to 2013.

The last four years at Texas, Mack Brown didn't show any ability to either recruit the right players or develop them. SMU is the level Mack should be looking at, especially since he can recruit in Texas.

I don't think Mack has to be solid X's and O's wise as long as he can attract the right staff to fill in the gaps... He is a hell of a guy and parents like. I think he'd be great recruiting but It would all depend on the supporting cast that he could build there... And after choosing Manny Diaz and Bryan Harsin(two hires that I never liked) I don't have confidence in him putting together a really good staff. He kept a staff that severely underdeveloped top talent for the last 4+ years. We have had some really really good players in the recent past that have been held back by ridiculous coaching decisions. That is why I don't think he could have success there... Yeah the bar is much much lower but I don't see dudes fighting to work with Mack at SMU. IMHO I think it also, at least to me, says something that so many of Macks players were let go by CS due to behavioral issues.

Zero developmental ability! And if I were a player during the period you mentioned I would feel pretty damn cheated from a developmental prepare me for the next level and to win POV.

In our most key periods of need at the QB position we chose Ash, McCoy which IMO set us back pretty far. There was far better talent out there than we were bringing in.

. He kept a staff that severely underdeveloped top talent for the last 4+ years.

I get that you are mad and I admit taht Mack made mistakes and got lazy but this statement is nonsense. . .

In the last 4+ years, Mack fired virtually the entire staff, replaced them with new "upgrades" and encouraged one of the upgrades to "move on".

If Mack went back into coaching, there would be a serious line of guys who wanted to work with him.   You guys do realize for all your carping that Mack lost it, coaches like Lou Holtz (grandson) and Mike Shannahan (son) sent their kids to play for him. . . not just to play but to learn how a system runs.

This is the same Mack that was one of the stars at the Annual THSCA meetings when he spoke, and those guys didn't want to hear war stories, they wanted X's and O's. . . .

Not saying Mack should take the SMU job but if he did, he'd instantly start stealing a good deal of the quality 3 star talent in TEXAS. . .SMU has a campus you can sell (oh damn does it ever) . . .He could follow Patterson's "path to success" at TCU by playing in a weak conference.

Some of you need to seperate the butt hurt hate from pragmatic reality. . . Mack's forgotten more football than the interweb geniuses combined. . . . .There is a reason that Troy Aikman mentioned him in his Hall of Fame comments. . . .

both 'mack has forgotten more football than internet geniuses' and he made mistakes and got lazy are both true. for whatever reason(s) he wore out or ran out of gas at texas. it happens, pretty much to everybody who stays in one place a long time.

i hope he comes back. i think it would be fun to see how he does, and i suspect he'd be re-energized and do well.

Totally off topic but...

Lakeman, I can see your posts but, for some reason, have a hard time reading/understanding them...it could be my monitor but they seem to bounce around which is very distracting.  Please don't misconstrue this as a complaint...I enjoy the distraction.

The death penalty has permanently destroyed the Pony football program. Can't imagine Mack going there.

I can see where Mack might be a good fit at SMU and yes they would most likely open the bank to pay him but how much money will be left to build a quality staff? I can't see him taking the job without assurances that he has the budget to hire the quality of staff he will need to turn around the program.

Mack needs to stay at ESPN.............only one guy was old enough to be a coach and he knows X's & O's.. enough said

Mack's not going. Chad Morris, get your wedding dress ready.

I've never experienced  a former UT coach successful at another school. Fred Akers won 12 games in four years at Purdue and John Mackovic was fired in the middle of his third season at Arizona.
