"Silence at Baylor"

Re: the article, I share everyone's sentiments. This is damning, regardless of the ultimate outcome.

I also find it beyond belief that the media slept on this for all those months. Even if somebody at the Trib-Herald didn't chase it, there are multiple BU websites. That only a few posts were mentioned is incredible - a story of this magnitude wouldn't last 6 hours in Austin without folks breaking the news.

The article casts one hell of a bad light on the Baylor program (which is at the peak of its existence) and its coaches.  Briles is a damn good coach - but is he the kind of coach that will do anything to win at all costs?

My biggest connection with Briles (on a distant level) is more about his tenure with Stephenville than our rivalry with Baylor. I attended both Brownwood and Stephenville schools when I was younger, so Briles was a name I heard a lot. Admittedly, I've never thought of him as anything but a stand up guy. And without all of the details, I'm trying not to let that perception shift too terribly much. Although I'd admit this is something that could tear apart anyone's reputation and deservingly so.

That said, Briles has always had a reputation for running a competitive program. Clearly he had a lot of success prior to coaching at the collegiate level. Outside of Stephenville, there was also debate about how clean of a program he was running. There were constant claims that the team was on roids, painkillers and so forth. His teams were pretty beefy back then. On the Stephenville side, the guy is revered like a football god. The Briles I heard about weekly and met a few times, doesn't seem like the kind of man that would go this far to win ball games. But this really just adds to those who have suspected Briles of winning at all costs well before this incident ever occurred.

After this article I had to go take a hot shower. The only good out of the article was that I wasn't reading about the coach of the University of Texas.

I was very concerned when Briles was in running for the UT job. Maybe the better word was scared. I don't respect or like Briles. I respect him as a coach, especially as an offensive coach, but not as a person. After reading this article he is an offensive coach.

Juan, I absolutely love your contribution to the site and you're one of the best, if not the best, posters on here but I don't understand posting something in a thread that has nothing to do with the thread topic. Sorry, had to say it.

Take a deep breath, exhale slowly.  It will be OK.

I've always viewed Briles as a snake in the grass.

But I thought better of Bennett.

I grew up and played football in Granbury. I have always hated Briles and viewed him as a dirtbag. But we all grow up with different heroes as kids.

My brief conversation with Phil Bennett in the elevator at Big 12 Media Days last month:

AC: IS Baylor going to be that good this year coach?

Bennett:  Yep, that's the plan

AC:  Good luck on the field this year coach

Bennett:  Thanks

AC:  I dislike your shirt

Bennett:  Of course you do

-- He has lost a ton of weight.  Took me a while to recognize him.  Great defensive mind - it's hard to win at SMU as a head coach.

Bomani Jones just did a whole segment on ESPN radio on the Texas Monthly article. He took a commercial break and did another segment on the Waco media.  In my opinion Jones is the best and most intelligent talking head on ESPN. He grew up in Houston, so he knows about sports in Texas. Has said in the past that the Texas job is the best coaching job in football.

Some of the highlights was that a coach at most schools would be fired for this, but he knows that won't fire Briles since he wins eleven games a year. He also said you wonder what else is going on in the program if they're willing to do something like this, especially when good players want to spend four years in Waco.

I've heard this as well, FWIW.
