Alabama and the SEC are about as close to a dynasty as a team and conference can get. They are on their 8th straight BCS National Championship of which Bama has three. You have to go back to the Longhorns 8 years ago to break their strangle hold, but as good as they are they also benefit from being voted into the game every year. It's a lot easier to win a game if you are in the game. Quite frankly they are lucky.
This season and last season Alabama suffered losses that eliminate other team in other conferences. Alabama lost at home to Texas A&M while poor Oregon lost on the road to Stanford. A Stanford that, at the time, was ranked higher than A&M. Last season Bama lost to LSU and just like this season it didn't matter. The voters, led by ESPN, decided we needed to see LSU/Bama II. They put a team into the National Championship game that didn't win their own conference. What we got was one of the most boring games in BCS history, until last night. That same season we watched a really good Oklahoma St team not get a chance to play in the game because they were deemed unworthy. A late season slip to Iowa St cost the Cowboys because only the SEC gets a do-over. OSU won their conference and defeated Stanford in a BCS Bowl.
The SEC has also benefits by the opponents they draw. Bama has defeated ND, LSU and Texas in their run. Texas was actually leading Bama and was driving when Colt McCoy went down with an injury. Notre Dame and LSU both run power offenses. The teams that gave Bama a run for their money are spread or option offenses. Johnny Football ran wild on them and Georgia came close with a big passing game. Even here is Alabama had lost they would have slipped in Georgia or LSU into the BCS title game.
Same for Florida and LSU in their three games. The defeated Ohio St twice and OU once. Neither of these teams have a wide open spread and QB based offense. The only team to break the mold was Auburn with Cam Newton flying high and they are also the only team to win a Championship against a spread QB based offense when they defeated Oregon 22-19.
The SEC is good but they are also fortunate that they have the only conference that losing doesn't seem to matter. For every other conference, you loose, you never get a chance.
