i guess it boils don't to what Patterson called the criteria, are we looking for a longer term coach or a quick culture fix. my preference would be a longer term coach. i'd love someone in the malzahn, andersen age group

Apparently, the chaos of last week was enough to convince him he wanted no part of Texas. He was extremely turned off.

After waiting for things to come together for so long, and it looked as though they would, but a phone call to Saban (requested by Saban) after the meeting with Mack sealed the deal as far as Saban staying at Bama. Things did not go according to plan and that was the last straw.

Two guys I talk to say Texas is still speaking with Sexton. Texas as in a rep for the BMDs who were most favorable toward Saban to begin with.

JS does not agree that Texas is still talking with Sexton and thinks the whole deal is dead.

We were so incredibly close with Saban. However, the courtship had gone on for more than a year. During the last stretch, Saban was pretty much decided on coming. It came down to a phone call that Saban requested after the meeting with Mack. Mack flipped the situation upside down because Patterson/Powers though Mack was ready to hang it up and weren't prepared to force the matter. Further, Mack began talking about "If" he retired to then take a job with UT as a GM type.

When that phone call happened, it was over. Saban had waited and UT looked like it was directionless when it counted. He decided it was better to stay put with what he knows.

So there really wasn't a line in the sand drawn. The combination of being fed up, discouraged by what he saw, and somewhat fearful of things blowing the hell up with Mack was enough to throw the train off the tracks, plus his request of Mack being out of the way was even in jeopardy.
