Saban catching hell . . . .

I look at it this way. Patterson inherited something of a bloated mess and the reason he was hired is he was the guy who said he had a plan to fix it. If he keeps Mack then Mack is now his problem and he can't lay it off on Dodds. Plus Patterson has barely communicated with Mack. Your $6MM+ with bennies employee. Those are the tea leaves I'm reading.

I may not have the popular opinion here but I do not see the fuss over Saban.
Yes, he is a winner and the greatest current coach in football now. He knows how to build a winning program and has won NC at 2 different schools in his tenure. BUT.......

He is nearing the end of his career, he is in his early 60's and not much younger than Mack Brown. Does he have the energy to take on another challenge at Texas that he did at Bama when he started there 8 years ago? Will he attack the program with the same passion. I like to think he would but still he has a lot of miles on him. Also, how much longer will he realistically coach at this level before deciding to want to slow down. JoPa and Bowden, for as good of coaches as they were, were not the same coach after age 70 than they were before it.

He has never been anywhere longer than 7 years and he may likely want to retire someday (at least it is not that unreasonable). Don't you think it is better to try and find the next coach who has the potential to be there 10-20 years? or is that not even realistic today?
Im sure you know people that want to retire by 55 and others that are 70+ are working. Why do you set a limit on his retirement?

and he averages 7 years at a job, great, stay here 7 years and leave or retire.

No, i dont want a coach that is here 10-20 years, we have that now. how you like that?

I want a coach here as long as he is getting the job done. If thats 2 years, ok, if thats 22 years, ok.

I want Saban here for the exact reason you just stated, "he is a winner and the greatest current coach in football now. He knows how to build a winning program and has won NC at 2 different schools in his tenure."

Imagine if you were running an entertainment entity with three main revenue drivers with almost $200mil in cash flow. All three revenue drivers are in the tank and you have a barely functioning admin team.

My plan would be to find a highly capable interim manager to stabilize the main revenue driver, work on building my corporate management team, attack the two small revenue drivers and once all that was done, circle back and rebild the main revenue driver for the long term.

The fact that you minimize the risk of the main revenue driver and don't get someone who you made a long term commitment to who ends up being the wrong guy helps eliminate having to deal with unexpected problems elsewhere in the program and having your main revenue driver in turmoil. There is only so much Patterson can fix in the next few years.

As long as Saban wins 8 games he is worth the money. No one thinks Mack is capable of more than 8 wins/yr on a consistent basis. With Mack underperforming so badly, the fanbase is disengaging. If you went to any of the home games, you know the energy level is missing. Risking Mack in place for another year risks a more extreme disengagment by the fans.

A highly competent interim coach is exactly what UT football needs right now. Rebuild the foundation, rebuild men's bb and baseball, then find a long term HC.
