Revisiting GDGD

That is some weak shit. That speaks volumes that you would even for a moment try and equate the two.
I think coaches who are among the most highly paid in their profession should be held to the highest standards possible. I don't think the same should apply to college kids, many of whom are still teenagers. Particularly when those same kids can only really perform to the level they've been taught and in a system that puts them in a position to succeed.
I think I'm either misunderstanding you or you are misunderstanding me. I think Chris Simms was a good QB who received poor treatment from the fans because our coaches bungled the whole situation.

I have zero issue with criticizing Davis and think much of it is justified.

he wasnt a great OC, but ill say this...go back to his times as OC at tulane and georgia...his calling was always a spread offense...why mack brown wanted him to move to more prostyle when he got to UT really hampered him as he never had a feel for that...lo and behold we go spread with vince young and colt and we have some of the most dynamic offenses "statistically" in the history of our program...mack wants to go back to a prostyle power running game (with a soph qb who all his life has been in the spread) and GD goes back to the fetal position...

some blame goes on him, and some on Mack. we have yet to find a true offensive identity

Okay - I reread your original post and still get the same takeaway from the phrasing, but it sounds like we're on the same page here.

There are quite a few big losses that you can Blame on Greg Davis, Mack Brown, and the offense. Remember the Big 12 title game loss to Nebraska? 22-6 I think was the final. The offense got shut out. No running game, a Greg Davis staple against decent defenses. 14-3 to OU. Absolutely pitiful offensive showing. Same with the 12-0 shutout to OU. Just dreadful. Once again against the Aggies that great 12-7 offensive explosion when we couldn't even run the ball against their dreadful defense. Cost us the South that year and the game was at home too. Even with a stud offensive line we could not run on them. Davis and his offense set records against bad defenses. Against good defenses it didn't happen. He was lucky to play with a huge talent advantage against bad defenses. Everyone in the conference has basically been setting records in the last 15-20 years. Watching his offense against OU was torture. I agree though that the head coach is the primary problem for all of our issues.

Greg Davis had an atrocious record at Tulane. Never had a winning season. Final year record 1-10. GD is simply in the wrong business.

Some of those OU defenses were extremely good. Shoot, OU in those days was just a damn good team. Even so, you are right, he laid a few eggs.

His head coaching record is irrelevant. He's a coordinator. Like Will Muschamp (but before you freak out, not as good as WM).

Greg Davis was either below average or good. He wasn't terrible. That's my point. He's certainly not to blame for our shortcomings - that's just giving Mack a pass.

I'm not sure I'm in total disagreement with any of you unless your argument is that he sucked when he was here.

Brasky - just wanted to say you've had some good thoughts on this thread. Post more often. And not only because I probably agree with you more than not.

Thanks, man. It's great for the site to have some engaging conversations with differing opinions.

I did like Chris Simms, by the way! I thought Major should have been given a fair chance to play but I've always felt terrible for Simms for not ever being accepted by the majority - or at least a very vocal minority - of our fans. Simms was good. He had a couple of really bad games, one that cost us a CC and MNC berth.

Agree with the above.

I think the original post was trying to ask the question: We know GDGD was not a great OC/recruiter but was he as bad, at the time, as we though he was or did he look worse than he was bc of Mack Brown?

The me the answer to that question, is Mack made GDGD worse than he actually was, which was an average OC. GDGD had great talent. GDGD did some good things and the O had some good numbers but overall, if you put a B level OC there we would have done better.
