Rationale for Big 12 Expansion?

Just merge the ACC and Big 12 to a superconference, with a true CCG game: East vs West.

Keep the 2 conf schedules as division schedules, that way the 2 champs only meet in the CCG.

Could work.

Just threw it out there for discussion. We keep our division as is, let the ACC figure theirs out. ;-)

 
You would have 4 divisions. East, West, North & South.

Okay, just for fun, I'll play along with this idea. I'll assume we'd strong-arm Notre Dame into full time membership to get to 26.

But, now what do we call ourselves? Super-BIG? The Colossal Conference? All-America Conference?

Southwest Division

UT, OU, Tech, Baylor, Ok State, TCU

Midwest Division

KU, KState, Iowa St, Louisville, Pitt, WVU, Notre Dame

Atlantic Division

BC, Syracuse, MD, UVa, VaTech, Wake Forest

Southeast Division

UNC, Duke, NC St, Clemson, GaTech, FSU, Miami

UCF and Cincinnati are both solid picks and underrated gems. On the surface there is no sexy factor there but if you dig below the surface they are brilliant additions.

1) UCF - Largest school in the country, growing school, growing market, hotbed of Florida recruiting to go with Texas recruits. Large city for TV eyes (unlike many of the big 12 markets). FSU and Miami were nothing until the right coach was able to harnass the recruits to build those programs. Same can be done at a school like UCF where demographics are similar. There is also greater upside at UCF then there is at USF because UCF has their own on campus facilities and location is less of an overlap with Gainesville than Tampa is.

2) Cincinnati - Solid program over the last 10 years, they keep rising and building. Large TV market (over 3 million people in the Cincinnati/Dayton market). Ohio is one of the top 5 states for talent and this will open it up to the Big 12 and TX. Travel partner for WVU and natural rivalry there. Fans will travel to big games (they have travelled well to WVU and OK in the past) They have a stadium that will seat close to 70k for big games against (TX and OU) while they have a neat on campus stadium for smaller games.

Adding both schools will give the big 12 access to 3 of the top 5 states for football recruits (Ohio, Texas and Florida) No other conference will have that ability.

 
Not necessarily. If adding, say, Cincinnati and UCF didn't reduce TV pay-outs and actually increased them with addition of a CCG I don't see UT having a problem with it. Furthermore, UT probably wouldn't have to play either newbie every year because both would probably be in an Eastern Division with WVU, Iowa State, KState, and KU.
Of course, that proposal will lead to more in-fighting because I doubt anybody wants to lose marquee games with UT and OU. IMHO, one of the BIGGEST mistakes made by the Big12 was not preserving the OU-Nebraska rivalry. That was a no-brainer to me.

It will be very interesting to see how all this shakes out, moving forward.

I think you are dead right about the OU-Nebraska game. If the Big 12 had created non-geographci divisions, so that OU and Nebraska were in the same one, then perhaps the Big 12 might today still be whole.

Personally I absolutely love the idea. I don't think ND will be too happy with Isu and Iowa schools but that's their issue. The Atlantic division sucks. More eyes than any other conference. Keep tier 3, win for all. I could care less what we name is.

LOL...yep the Atlantic Division sucks big time. I think you meant to say 'KS schools'...not Iowa.

Hey, I tried to draw the divisions by geography. Wake Forest gets screwed the hardest in this deal, but I pegged them as the weakest NC brand.

 
Cincinnati is not an option. Thats like going to the dance hall, turning down all but the most marginally attractive women, and then humping your cousin.
Central Florida is new TV sets and a footprint in SEC/ACC country. Have to give the West Virginians a travel partner since they clearly didnt think this whole "distance" thing through....

Dodds screwed us all by not bringing in Louisville.

I believe that Notre Dame would be with Pitt, BC, Syracuse, MD & UVA if they have their Choice and I would believe they would.

What about East Carolina, 50,000 seat stadium with sell out streak going. Also you don,t have to do divisions with a rotating schedule and two permanent opponents.

Need to get back to 12, at least till the GoR is up.

Wake should be happy to be in. At least 2 schools are close.
