Who: Texas Longhorns 1-3 (0-1) vs TCU Horned Frogs 4-0 (1-0)

When: Saturday October 3rd 2015 at 11AM

Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth TX (ABC)

Odds: TCU -15

The Good: The TCU offense has picked up where they left off last season.  Heisman quarterback candidate Trevonne Boykin has been on fire to start the year passing for nearly 1500 yards and 14 touchdowns on 65% passing.  Boykin is protecting the ball well and is also making plays with his legs to put stress on opposing defenses. Aaron Green leads the running attack for TCU averaging 6 yards per carry and 6 touchdowns on the season.  The headliner for TCU so far has been massive receiver Josh Doctson.  Doctson is coming off a monster week against Texas Tech (18 catches/267 yards/3 touchdowns).  Doctson presents a matchup nightmare for the Longhorns, and the responsibility might fall to one of the freshmen corners with size to matchup with him.  The Frogs have also spread the ball the around in the passing game eight different receivers have reached the end zone this season.

The Bad: The TCU defense looks nothing like it did last season.  After a large amount of turnover due to graduation, injuries, and suspensions, the Frogs are finding themselves in shootouts week in and week out.  So far TCU is yielding 405 yards per game to opposing offenses, and needed a circus show final play to hold off a feisty Texas Tech team.   TCU has also seen their struggles on special teams.  Their kicking game is experiencing shortcomings as senior kicker Jaden Oberkrom has only connected on 57% of field goals this season.  This combination of deficiencies on defense and special teams will put a team in a game of chance every time they take the field.

The Uncertain: TCU will make their living on offense and hope they can make enough plays to win in a shootout.  The question is if they will have the personnel and ability to frustrate Jerrod Heard like Oklahoma State did in the second half saturday.  The Longhorns are coming off of two heartbreakers and are desperately grasping at anything they can find to turn the season around.  If Texas can find some more defense like they showed last week they become a dangerous team with Jerrod Heard.  The Longhorns are expected by many to lose the next two games and will be playing with nothing to lose at this point.

What's at stake: TCU is one of the top teams in the nation and is looking for a perfect season and playoff berth.  This Longhorn team has shown improvement and fight since their opening loss to Notre Dame and would love to make a statement against a playoff contender.  Vance Bedford was able to scheme last year to slow down TCU in the first half before turnovers did Texas in.  If he can dust off a similar game plan and limit the explosive TCU offense, Texas might find themselves in position to make a statement.

Prior to the season I would have put this game in the sure loss category.

But now 4 games into the season, I'm thinking it's not so much a sure loss but is still a probable loss. In other words, we could have a chance of winning if both the offense and defense play well for 4 quarters.

Texas has to hope the defense can subdue the TCU offense somewhat. Otherwise the Longhorns need to be prepared to score often and quick. We know Heard has the potential but putting up 50+ points isn't something Texas is accustomed to.

TCU will win the shootout if that's what it comes down to.

I am not counting this team out of any game. Let's have 4 freshman on the TOP freshmen list next week. Or, how about 5?

Hook 'em!

Java, I dig the passion and support you always show.
No doubt this team has something brewing that will fully manifest itself in the near future. Personally, I think the program is great hands....

The reality is the defense does have issues and the offense will have to overcompensate for those issues. A potent TCU offense could magnify these issues even more than ND, Cal or OSU did.....

Even with all of that I think Texas has a chance to hang with the Horned Frogs at Amon Carter.

TCU has issues, as well.

The beauty of our 18 and 19 year old year olds, is they are Strong's 18 and 19 year olds. They are tough, and they are leaders. As we play more of them, we seem to improve, hmmm. I'm not counting them out, unless you all think we shouldn't bother playing the game.

Is that why we play it?

Hook 'em!

Just in time for the Texas game! lol

TCU reinstates football players accused of beating students, stealing beer

Two TCU football players who were arrested Sept. 21 after fellow students accused them of beating them up and stealing their beer have been reinstated to the football program, coach Gary Patterson said Wednesday.

Senior defensive end Mike Tuaua, 22, and redshirt freshman wide receiver Andre Petties-Wilson, 19, were accused of assault after leaving a party on Sept. 4 and of stealing a case of Keystone Light beer.

Andre Petties-Wilson, 19. Michael Rea Tuaua, 22. Andre Petties-Wilson, 19. Michael Rea Tuaua, 22.
The university’s disciplinary review process was completed Tuesday after which both players were reinstated to the football team, Patterson said after practice Wednesday night.

They were suspended for three games but are eligible to play Saturday morning against the Texas Longhorns.

“They’ve gone through the judicial process, and Mike and Andre are back,†Patterson said. “As an ambassador for this university, I’m sad for all parties, not just my guys, that the incident happened.â€

Mark Cohen, TCU athletic department spokesman, had said the two were suspended from the football program for violating team rules.

The criminal case against them is proceeding, but has not been forwarded to the Tarrant County district attorney’s office for prosecution, said Sgt. Steve Enright, a Fort Worth police spokesman, Wednesday night.

TCU’s disciplinary process has no bearing on the criminal case, Enright said.

Both players were arrested last week on suspicion of robbery with bodily injury. They were released from jail on $15,000 bail each.

Listenbee limited

Wide receiver Kolby Listenbee, who sat out the Texas Tech game last week, was still limited this week, Patterson said.

But he left open the possibility that the senior would play against Texas.

“Kolby still didn’t practice much today. But that doesn’t mean anything by Saturday,†Patterson said.

Listenbee left the SMU game two weeks ago after catching a touchdown pass, falling on his backside after a leaping catch with a defender on him. He did not return to the game.

Receiver Emmanuel Porter was also limited in practice, Patterson said.

Patterson expressed doubt that Petties-Wilson, who returned to practice Wednesday along with Tuaua after three-game suspensions, could help right away.

“I don’t know. We’ll see,†Patterson said. “He’s been gone three weeks.â€

Lathan out

Defensive end Terrell Lathan hasn’t practiced and won’t play against Texas, Patterson said.

Lathan went out of the SMU game with an apparent shoulder injury. He sat out last week’s game against Texas Tech.

I think this game will show us what kind of DBs we have. This game will determine who starts for the rest of the season. I want to see aggressive DBs. If the safeties are 20 yards off the LOS, then find someone who isn't afraid of getting beat. Texas has nothing to lose this game. Let's go out and play that way.

I may be wrong, J.B., but I think that I read an article somewhere early on that said that they were exonerated by a group of their peers, and that the criminal charges are still pending.

Is that true? They were only exonerated by some of their peers, yet that's enough for Patterson to allow them to play?

Okaaay! Police investigation closed because victim refused to press charges. Sooo, it didn't happen, coach?

Hmnnn.
