Quick Coaching Update (Updated Saturday 11AM)

Herman was here under mack brown and has ran his own show in texas.

He knows exactly what it takes and the potential that it can produce. He will have an impressive staff

Speaking of the control issue I have no problem with Hermann having the same control that Mack Brown had. I know that Mack left us with a bad taste in our mouth's toward the end but he accomplished a lot.

I'm assuming that "total control" also means he brings/hires whomever he chooses i.e. Applewhite...thoughts?

I dont care who be brings as long as it produces wins, doesnt have criminal implications or ncaa violation implications.

Looks like Gilbert will be gone. Which is shame as mattox will go with him who i thought has done a great job recruiting and on the field.

We need to keep Traylor. He has been recruiting well

Our initial guess was that 5.5-6 million would be the price tag for Herman. Looks like the contract is in that ball park. The 7-8 million dollar figures were fantasy world stuff.

That comes out to 8.33 million per year

Well I'm little upset that I didn't get the job since I only requested $4M a yr.

I think what may have done me in was bringing a cooler with beer in it and telling them I was picking my assistants from HornSports. Oh well, their loss.

That makes things interesting. Who do we want as DC? (Unless we're just getting Aranda)

The head coach should have "total control."  If "total control" means picking your assistants, deciding when to fire them, practice schedule, game planning, etc... if total control means everything pertaining to playing and coaching the game then yes.

Are we to believe that Herman wants to hammer out the scheduling during his offseason, design uniforms, arrange for travel plans.... hotels, meals.... decide which airline to fly?

I am all for the coach having control over football.  Maybe I don't know what he means?

Having been in the coaching profession for 20 years I've built up a pretty good network of folks that I can speak with to get information. Here is what I've been told today:

You're going to see a different approach to program control and hiring of assistant coaches this time around because you don't have Patterson as the AD. Perrin is going to let Herman do his thing because Texas can't afford to be irrelevant anymore. Brewster will be coming back which is huge. If Applewhite doesn't get the UH gig, look for him to come back to Texas which should tell you all you need to know about how much control Herman has. Orlando is at the top of the list early on to take over at UH but the powers that be want an offensive minded guy just like Herman. Don't believe the Holgerson hype, he isn't leaving a Power 5 school. Also, don't believe what Coach O said this morning about Dave Aranda staying put. He is target number 1 for Herman to be the DC and with their friendship dating back from college Aranda is weighing this thing very heavily. Mattox, Jean-Marie, and Traylor are strong possibilities to staying. Mattox is the biggest surprise because of his ties with Gilbert but I was told that Herman really like his work and Mattox is listening. Traylor is a big time East Texas recruiter and Herman wants to continue to develop that pipeline. Jean-Marie is one of the best recruiters in the Big 12 and recruiting is a big deal to Herman obviously.

One last thing, there is smoke to the rumor about Kiffin going to LSU. Kiffin has gotten his ring and wants more autonomy to run his offense than what he's getting at Bama. Coach O has told him that he has complete control of personnel and decision making of the offense.

I'll post more as it comes in.

Aranda is a hell of a defensive coach, but can he coach against the spread? Best coach against the spread would be the WV DC off the top of my head.

Aranda did pretty well against A&M. How did he do against Florida?
