QB Position: What to expect

Biggest thing I think needs to happen for swoopes is get in the shotgun. Two te sets are not his strong point. He is not a pro style qb. Defense is so much easier to read when your standing up in the backfield rather under center. If still want ole run game use the pistol formation.

I think the biggest mistake would be to abandon the run as Brown and Gray are the two best weapons on offense. I'd like to see a lot of pistol on saturday

I agree, but it is nice to see his snaps again so you aren't totally going in blind.  My main point with him is that there are some encouraging things with him that show he's not just a useless project at the position.
i agree. i was thinking more of the 'experts' who have said he can't play becasue of what they saw last year. if we had seen colt or vy as true FR, they might have thought the same thing.

Really good stuff Mike. I'm looking forward to seeing what Swoops can bring to the table. Given the current state of the O line he has his work cut out for him and hopefully he can show some patience and make his reads.

I would think we'll see a heavy dose of Brown & Gray and might see more moving pocket type plays in order to give TS some options to run or at least get the D moving around and hopefully that open up some seams for the receivers.

I think game 1 showed us Shawn Watson likes to move the pocket.  It simplifies things a bit because it cuts the reads down to half of the field on rollouts.  Swaim or McFarland really need to step up in the passing game here.  I think it's possible to go 2 tight out of the gun and leave one in to help blocking (Swaim) while utilizing the other (McFarland) as a receiving threat.  If teams stack the box and Watson is calling a lot of plays that are on the move, an underneath option in the middle of the field will be a big item of comfort for Swoopes.  I wouldn't mind seeing Harris in the slot playing this role either.

It doesn' matter if Swoopes is under center or in shotgun. The OC needs to do the same thing he did with Ash last week. Get has butt out from behind that weak OL. Roll out, sprint out and bootleg/waggle him into open space and throw on the run. He could throw from the pocket on quick hitting throws which don't give the DL time to get in his face. If the OC is stubborn and makes him throw from the pocket it will be a train wreck.

I really encourage everyone to view Swoopes with an open mind.  Sometimes our recollections aren't accurate and I was surprised to find how much some of my thoughts changed on him
Unfortunately, many self-proclaimed "experts" on all the various boards are telling us how bad Swoopes is. For them, Swoopes has one game to prove how good he is which is totally unrealistic. If he has a rough game, never mind that it is his first start ever, then the experts will tell us he is a lost cause.

Are they wrong that Ash should retire?
I'm certainly not qualified to say whether or not he should hang 'em up...but neither are Bohls, ESPN or SI.

We all need to trust Ash, his family, and the doctors. They will make an informed decision and it will be the one that is in his best interest.

Having said all that, my limited understanding is that doctors know very little about concussions. At this point, I think they're medically viewed as independent incidents - meaning getting one does not make it more likely to get another.

If that's true, then I don't know how the Ash family makes this decision.

in my mind, probably not. as a father, if my kid just had his third concussion in less than a year it would be time to tell him to hang it up. but i suspect he'd fight me tooth and nail.

and my kid ain't playing QB at UT. if we was, he'd fight that much harder i'd guess and if a team of doctors says he's good to go and in no danger of further injury, i'm sure the pressure from all parties, not the least of which is David, is a whole different animal.

from the outside looking in based on what we know, playing him would seem to be irrespsonsible. they'll have to live with the decision.

What I bolded in your reply sounds a lot like what we heard last fall. And here we are again.

And, as far as being qualified, how qualified do you have to be to know that someone that has had 3 concussions should hang 'em up. You only have to use a little common sense and not be emotionally involved.

Really well done piece . .. this qualifies as meat on the bone. . . . (reference to another thread). . . .

Good insights.

Time for the team to have some fun. . . play well and let the chips fall where they may.

The issue with Swoopes development as a QB was in depth knowledge of the position due to playing at Whitewright HS.  He is far more comfortable in the shotgun as he struggles with pro style footwork when dropping.  I will assume that the coaching staff knows this and combined with the fact that Raulerson isn't as strong at the point of attack than Espinosa, should help Tyrone with his reads before the pocket collapses.

The WR core needs to step up big time as the ball will get on them much faster than with Ash at QB.  Swoopes is 40 yd fast, but not quick (another reason to be in shotgun).  I hope that there is a sprint option package b/c this is what Swoopes was the most comfortable with in HS.

Key is to watch BYU up front defensively and hope that the Cougars over think things and don't play over the nose of Raulerson.  This would help immensely as it is much easier to block "down" than control a man over your nose.

Lastly, I don't care what the score is, DON'T bring Heard in the ball game unless it's injury related.  Hook em.

Not even talking as a medical professional, I know if he was my son I would say that's it.  Go be a doctor. :)

I said this months before the season began, because it took Ash so long to recover and stop having symptoms, that it would be enough for me to have him call it quits.

I know it's a crushing decision for him, but he is still just a kid and this would be a very adult decision to make.  i would be very surprised if his doctors didn't advise him the same.

Now the adults (Charlie Strong) have to step in and say I will make the decision for you.
