I really encourage everyone to view Swoopes with an open mind.  Sometimes our recollections aren't accurate and I was surprised to find how much some of my thoughts changed on him

I think we can win with Swoopes, maybe more because of the defense and our running backs. I do think he showed some good things in his very limited action last year, albeit very raw.

He has had a full off-season with the staff and I think that despite many initial thoughts on Watson as a OC, last year he is considered to be a guru with QB.

In would love for Heard to be able to redshirt and learn this season as opposed to getting so much thrown on his plate. True Frosh just does not generally translate to success at such a position while lately redshirt seems to.

I think Swoopes will be OK. Watson can control alot of things this game. He is going to have to really earn that check this year.

Love the info and how it was broken down... I think that either of these guys could bring us success with the right packages. My biggest concern is our OLine. Losing Dom is obviously HUGE, IMO, so what are your thoughts about how the OLine will be effected? I wasn't real happy with the push that our OLine got vs the likes of UNT. We did not open up many holes between the tackles, and yes I realize they were stacking the box... We still didn't get much push. IMO our OLine holds the only keys to our O's success. If they can give either QB time I feel great... If they don't, well, HOOK EM!!! Thoughts on OLine adjustments? I know it was stated that the OLine would be a work in progress through the season.

Swoopes will have to make the defenses respect his ability to go down field. I would expect BYU to load the box and make him beat us with his arm....which he can do if he can get it right between his ears. I have confidence that Watson will put him in the right position to do it.

The offensive line was not good with or without Dom on Saturday. Getting back Desmond Harrison might help, but Wickline has his work cut out for him. They simply have to get better.

nice piece.

i don't think what swoopes did or didn't too last year is terribly relevant. i can't imagine a 2A kid playing in year one. hell, VY was a 5A kid and wasn't ready as a true FR.

nothing against ash, but i'm kind of excited to see what TS has in him. Saturday's gonna be interesting. for better or worse.

I think we have to use Swoopes. Heard supposedly hit a pretty serious wall with all the info that was thrown at him. Swoopes will have to take the reigns. Putting Heard in too soon could seriously derail the future for him and the team.

Had Heard enrolled early, things may be different.

I am in a hot debate with one of the Inside Texas mods about Swoopes and Heard.

Everyone thinks I am in love with Swoopes because I challenged him about his postion of making Swoopes a TE.  Which is ridiculous and really brings his credibility into question.

We are in the unfortunate position of having to find out if two babies will be capable of leading a powerful D-1 college football team - this year and the years to come.

I say this because I firmly believe Ash is done with football - for good.

Back to our youngsters.

Everyone needs to gird their loins as these two teenagers are getting ready to be tested by the crucible of fire.  Let us pray that, at least, one of them emerges as the next great UT QB we so desperately need.

Even Vince didn't come in and light the world on fire. It took him what seemed like a year and a half before everything really clicked and he became a consistent QB. Heck, I remember him being pulled in favor of Chance Mock in a game against Tech. It will take these guys time, but Watson will be a good source as a teacher to help them improve.

I agree, but it is nice to see his snaps again so you aren't totally going in blind.  My main point with him is that there are some encouraging things with him that show he's not just a useless project at the position.

Bohls, SI, ESPN...everyone seems convinced that Ash should retire. Either that, or they just want clicks.

Good article there Mike. I think it would be beneficial to Swoopes and the offense to run something like we used to with Colt when he had no running game to speak of. Use the short passing/dump off game with some designed QB runs and some zone read stuff. Keep the passing game simple with limited reads and rely on athleticism with Tyronne.
