Just for the fun of it, while we agonize until September 4th, let's take a very unofficial Hornsports survey of who we think will start at QB. I'll take the freshman though won't be surprised if it's Swoopes. I will cheer whomever trots out first and fully expect both will play. What do y'all think?

After last year, i'm pulling for Shane.  The only concern for me if its Shane, first college game as true freshman vs ND. Thats alot of pressure on a young kid.

That plays to his strength, IMO. Its all over his scouting stuff,.... "cool under pressure." And he's a warrior, like his dad.

ND is certainly something quite different than he's ever faced before, thats no lie. But the mentality that is implanted in his brain by being the son of a MLB player and having spent years polishing his craft, calls for him to meet such challenges head-on.

I'll say Shane. And I expect a mistake here and there in the first game, perhaps costly ones. But he'll also show us we finally have a QB at Texas, win or lose.

Against Notre Dame we should start Swoopes,Heard,& Beuchele just for 1st series. Swoopes could play a HB/TE then in short yardage run 18 wheeler. use threat of jet-sweeps to Heard who with a running start now may be a little unfair to try to catch him and Duvernay also. then let either D`Onta or Warren test how much tackling practice helped them before Beuchele and Burt test their deep pass defense. this offense will be no fun to face 80-90 plays a game.

I'm not sure who the starter will be but I'll make this prediction. If Swoopes comes out as the starter, I predict it may be Strong's last year.

Big daddy is correct. Doesn't matter who starts. The one that moves the ball better will get the majority of the snaps.

And my guess is it's going to be Gilberts call. Of course it is ultimately CS responsibility.

Swoopes may or may not start, but if, as soon as he struggles, Boo is put in, it will be ok.  Typically the first series is a check it out series, anyway.  I agree with Big Daddy and Bear, the guy who plays the majority of the snaps is 'the man', not the one who takes the first snap.

Hook 'em!

So we start Swoopes, he struggles the first possession and then pull him. By the time our O hits the field again, we could potentially be down by 2 scores. Also, what kind of signal does that send to Swoopes?

Call it a hunch but if Strong starts Swoopes, he doesn't do well and we lose, some big cigars are going to be very unhappy. My .02 cents worth.

By this scenario you would assume that our defense sucks and is going to give up 70, so who the qb is would be irrelevant.

Re-read it again, I said we could potentially (or insert possibility) be down by 2 scores. So many ways this could happen, good kick-off return, offensive TO for a TD or great field position.

Swopes started last year vs ND and Strong fired one of his most trusted coaches/advisors. You think he wanted to do that? As I've said several times, I really like what Strong brings to the table and I hope he stays around for a long time.

I've only seen Texas beat ND once in my life so I hope I'm wrong and if I am, laugh at me all yall want cause I will be laughing myself.

I got your point the first time and it is not impossible that your scenario could play out. My thinking is more of what is more likely to happen that the worst case scenario.  I am all too familiar, like the rest of you, that Swoopes has underwhelmed when the lights come on. I'm also trusting the coaches and what they see.  Gilbert went out of his way to say, I don't care what they have done in the past, I want to see what they can do in my system.  If he along with Charlie see that Swoopes is worthy of getting playing time, starting or otherwise, I trust them and what they are seeing.

Well let's hope you're right. I just think is a big gamble by Strong if you're not.

And he got to see what Tyrone could do in the spring game. Meh, at best. Now he's seen him in practice where, supposedly, Swoopes shines. I hope Gilbert remembers the game as well as looks at the past.

I think it will be Shane.  If Coach Strong had job security at this point, I think he might consider not starting him due to the incredibly big stage.... but he's going to have to just hope that this kid has that "it factor" and plays better the brighter the lights.  Why protect his psyche for the future if you won't be here?

Keep Swoopes in the very valuable 18 wheeler package.  He is very valuable in that regard.  I hope the new coaches utilize this, even if it doesn't fit what they are trying to do in their overall scheme.
