Patterson: Saban never pursued

Earlier this evening, I got a little ping on Bleacher Report (likely source) about a quote from Patterson that Texas never considered Nick Saban. I tried to find it to link it, but it's gone. Anyone else see it?

There's another thread on here (did not see it before I posted). Apparently, quote is accurate, but its truthfulness is suspect.

Exactly. I'm guessing this was in response to a question from the media? Why bring it up otherwise. What else could he say. Patterson wouldn't make himself look good by saying Saban turned us down.

Everybody needs to let the Saban talk die. Saban will deny it. Steve Patterson will deny it. Makes Patterson look weak if he says on record "uh huh by gosh by golly Saban turned me down so uh I went with Strong duh". We know for a FACT, that CNS said no. (And I have no knowledge of Jamail actually threatening Saban via Sexton but imo it definitely happened).

Move on people. Patterson took a swing and Jamail caught the ball at First Base. Out. Nothing we can do to change history.

The truthfulness is accurate. Saban was never an option. His name just brings a lot of traffic with it. The entire story was so obviously fabricated it fits with BMDs using any means necessary to put pressure on Patterson and Mack. Name one thing, outside of the talks to Sexton in the spring, that's true. Patterson doesn't have to say Saban turned us down since he never did. And even if he did it wouldn't make us look bad. He's got history in the making at Alabama.

If you take into account everything that we think and have heard happened since Saban's name came up and apply a little critical thinking it's easy to understand why Nick Saban is not coaching the Texas Longhorns next year...we wanted someone who could beat Oklahoma.

There are a lot of layers to the story. Powers and Patterson never wanted to be the guys paying a coach $8MM a year but they didn't really come clean with that until after the fact. No, Steve Patterson probably never did call Nick Saban, but there was substantial back and forth with emissaries, representative, agents and the like. Now knowing that Patterson was keeping his real opinion close to the vest - and one that had Powers' full backing - I don't believe it ever was going to happen. Patterson had the power and elected to not get committed to a land war in Asia and just went and did his thing with Strong. I personally wish he had been more upfront with certain stakeholders re the price for Saban and that it was a non-starter, but that was the strategy he chose.

Saban won the MNC at LSU . . . by beating Oklahoma.

Yes, Patterson called Saban. It's easy to say it didn't happen and there's nothing to suggest now that it didn't happen. It's just easy to think that. It's really not important at this point, Charley Strong is our man.

No, Patterson is not going to admit to flirting with someone who would not accept. No, Saban is not going to admit to being courted after recommitting to Bama. If you were expecting to hear that, think about what Saban would be going through now if he had admitted it, or Patterson had admitted it. Nothing good comes from admitting that.

McPhaul and JS lost zero credibility. They pass along information. With JS, simply look at the Dodds retirement, the contact with Saban last January, etc. To suggest he lost credibility is just not reality. McPhaul's connections were solid as well. There's just more to the entire picture than his info can encompass sometimes and information doesn't always flow fast enough. However, his connections continue to grow, even during this coaching search. That's a great thing for this site.

But again, it's time to let this go. You can follow or not follow whoever you want. Strong's our guy and I'm really looking forward to seeing the new staff he puts together and also how he finishes this recruiting class. Horn Sports will be in the middle of it all. It's an exciting time to be a Horn.

agree with you that we have a new coach and should support him - from all that i have read Coach Strong seems to be a good fit for us - lets hope he adds a stellar staff to support him

if the case is that Patterson and Powers did not want to pay 8 million and thereby taking college football coaching salaries to another level then do you think they will completely open their purse strings for Coach Strong's support staff ( if we have to get into a bidding war ) ? I do feel we need to have some solid hires on the offensive side of the ball

I'm excited about Strong, pumped really. I'm glad he's here.

That said, having spent a career in nonprofit management, if I'd ever deliberately mislead or lied to my BOD or BMD's, I'd have been FIRED.

Makes me have an intense dislike for Mack Brown. I'm glad the POS is gone.

If Strong does poorly, I will like Brown even less.

P.S. General You: Stop telling us to move on and get over it. It's only been a few days, it's only natural for people to still be curious after several weeks of intense speculation. It'll die down when it's ready.

Patterson NEVER called Saban and he was NEVER an option. Those were rumors that were spun off from the only talk that we had when Saban said thanks but no thank you. Really wish people would even entertain the idea that he was an option. Those rumors made us look very desperate. It's simply amazing that people still think the rumors had any amount of truth to them despite all the evidence pointings otherwise. Mcphaul and JS did lose some credibility and "friend of bevo" is certainly no insider. Let's have this talk die. We have a great coach who will bring in a great staff and I bet we will be in the playoffs in two or three years.
I don't know if Patterson called him, but I know the family was talking about a potential move and it certainly appears to those who know them that he was considering Texas as late as early last week. So, for me, there's a lot more credibility to the reports than some feel safe admitting.

Kirk Bohls does not agree with you.
