Patient...for now (The state of the program by Marian Hinton)

Marian,

I'm going to jump in here, where perhaps I should not, but here goes.

This is a tough season, a rebuilding season, and it is due to the problems left by the previous staff.  Those include gaps in talent, coaching, and discipline.  If anyone cares to disagree, please feel free to do so, but I don't need any further proof on those issues.

I find myself hesitant to click on your writing because I know in advance that it will have an ominous ring to it.  I agree with echeese.

Thanks for reading.

That's funny bc I've always been considered a sunshine pumper. I think the reason it's ominous is bc of our situation. I'm trying to be unbiased.

Marian, I'm not looking for sunshine, but why the doom and gloom?

What did everyone expect when Espinosa and Ash went down in same same game?  What did everyone expect when Harrison and Estelle kept toking?

My hope is that with Estelle gone, Harrison will return.  It seems pretty obvious that one was pulling the other in.  Getting one of those guys back would be huge.  Is Daje coming back, as well?  That would give another dimension to our offense.

What is the State of the Program?  Charlie is trying to clean up a huge mess, and I'm glad he was willing to take on the job.  It is a good thing he doesn't require much sleep.  Anyone that wants a healthy dose of reality needs to walk in Strong's shoes for about 48 hours.  I doubt that many could keep up.

You don't need to be concerned about responding to me.  It's not necessary.  Everyone has their preferences.  It's a tough season, and I prefer to look for improvement and look forward to better seasons in the future.  In the interim, I will support the team, including front and center in the Cotton Bowl.

Hook 'em!

perhaps i'm too stupid (entirely possible) to understand what about the OP turned this thread into a panty-wad, but i don't get it.

Street the only issue I have is saying our fan base has turned into the fan base looking for a moral victory. For some reason I have a problem with that. Maybe I am splitting hairs, don't know. I am extremely blunt and sometimes too open with my opinion. I don't want sunshine pumping or all negatives, I just want honest opinions from UT fans. And yes I can handle the truth. I will be patient with CS because I think he can turns this around. I am looking for progress not yea we only lost by 10 that is a moral victory. Just my two cents.

StP,

I'm in no way upset, just giving an opinion.  Hornsports at times asks for opinions, and I have never offered one.  This is clearly a rebuilding year.  I think we should acknowledge that.

since the article talks about folks needing to be patient, i would think this being a rebuilding year is implied.

other than the vocal minority of 'mack was 30-minutes from a title' people, i suspect most readily acknowledge where we are.

doesn't mean we like it or accept 'moral victories' or are satisfied.

anyway, i thought the original post was fairly benign

I'm missing what's got folks upset about this column. When I read it the author asks a lot of tough questions and doesn't really give much personal opinion, instead letting the reader make their own choice.
Thank you, Matt. I am kind of surprised too. I think it started with my stating "moral victory" and people taking offense to that, but I think if we are being honest, that's where we are.

I have never been negative about Texas football. I'm a perpetual optimist about the Longhorns, but I'm also aware of what reality is right now.

I had no idea this would incite people; in fact, I don't even think I stated MY opinion rather than just facts.

That being said, I guess sometimes it happens.

;)

I wasn't aware I was writing Doom and Gloom. I certainly didn't mean to. In fact, I agree with everything you said. No doom and gloom here at all. I like where we are headed and I understand it will take time for us to get there.

I think we are right where most of us expected to be. It wasn't a doom and gloom piece. It was a "be patient" piece. I think people are just thinking that way b/c one of the posters pounced on that from the get go, and that response helped shaped peoples' perspective on what I said, and it's taken off like wildfire.

Didn't strike me as doom and gloom at all.  You accurately outlined the situation as it plays out between our more sane fans and those who prefer freaking out.  This team will get better, the problem we have is the schedule is severely front-end loaded.

The schedule is front end loaded with top teams, but WVU and TCU are very solid teams, and you can never under estimate KSU as they have owned us for years.  We have to travel to Manhattan. This team can very easily be 3-9 this year with an outside chance of 2-10 if ISU and Tech bring their A game against us. The question of the day is ....Are the players really that bad, or did Strong put together a not so strong coaching staff ? The answer will be revealed in about three years.

I have to wait for an answer, because clues are so mixed at this time. One minute our defense are letting BYU shred us, the next we are holding UCLA to under 25. We know our offense sucks, and we know why. It will take three years to put talent on the field. Once we get that talent will the coaching staff win with it ? The answer in three years !!!

I have two points/questions that may clarify my perspective:

1)  Why do folks think Charlie will not be given 5 to 6 years to put in place his program and compete at the highest level?  A&M has always been quick to pull the trigger, Texas has been much less reactionary.  I haven't seached it, but I don't recall a coach that served between Royal and Mack who was given less than 5 or 6 years.

2)  Initiating a 'State of the Program' column during a rebuilding year, with a new coaching staff, seems like a very risky move.  The frequency of the column makes it even more difficult.  Perhaps we will become a cinderella story this year, but I cannot imagine the difficulty in writing the column until or unless that happens.
