OT: Vacation Ideas

Do not, under any circumstances, lay glue-down wooden floors. Several years ago, before my wife passed away, we were looking to install some wood floors and a consultant at a flooring store said that installing glue-down floors was not much more difficult that the floating type. We believed him and installed about 800 feet of glue down wood floors. After the first 100 feet or so we were cursing the consultant and would probably have castrated him, given the opportunity.

Engineeered flooring is OK, but make certain that the top layer is thick enough so that it can be refinished if needed.

I like the Bavaria idea. It's on my bucket list.
I have been twice (Oktoberfest both times), and I am sold on it. I would love to live in Munich for a time. beer heaven.

Have you been to Frankfurt? I have an overnight layover there.

Sicily...I go there about 4 times each year (for the past 8-10 years); know the island intimately. If you're based in Catania, go to Siracusa and Taormina. On a clear day try to ride up Mt Etna (drive or take bus). If you're in Palermo go to Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento. Explore fish market in Palermo and Catania. If you need more info on anything I can provide.

Juan's suggestion about 5-terre is right on. The place is seriously beautiful. Best to explore it by boat.

If you can rent a car in Rome then drive to Naples. About 30 miles outside Rome on the main highway, the road passes through the Rapido River valley and you pass a hill with a beautiful Benedictine monastery atop it (looks particularly good around sunset). This is Monte Cassino where a particularly brutal period of fighting took place in WW2 between the US 5th Army (with elements of the British 8th army as well as gurkha and Sikh regiments) and entrenched troops of the Herman Goering panzer grenadiers. It took the Allies 5 months to capture this strategic gap (it controlled the road to Rome), they were pushed back twice and finally took it, losing close to 80K troops in the process, and the monastery was bombed to rubble Z(rebuilt/restored after WW2). There is a war cemetery, beautiful views and the monastery itself is gorgeous.

S. of Naples you can daytrip to Pompeii (you can get there by train from Naples), also drive the Amalfi coast towards Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano. Simply gorgeous views. If you have a whole day, take boat to Capri.

In Sicily and Italy beware of pickpockets. Not joking here...lots of gypsies and their kids. Its a major problem.

Frankfurt is a very modern city except for the old square that has some nice restaurants and pubs. Try to get a hotel close to it. The river is very close by; nice place to walk at dusk.

If you need more info write (or pm, or whatever).

Bamboo is a great flooring surface. It is very hard and durable because it has silica in the fiber due to the nature of how bamboo grows and draws nutrients from the soil. Be careful and check the specifications of what you buy though, especially regarding standards of manufacture and source. If you are looking for a bargain you might end up with cheap wood from the Northwest USA that is shipped to China, processed to look like bamboo and shipped back to the US as a cheap alternative. If it is not really bamboo, it does not have the silica content and it will not have the durability of bamboo. Do your homework.

That's too bad. Le Cinque Terre kicks southern Italy butt.

Lordy, this is my dream vacation! My wife and I have severe differences as she wants to re-visit the Black Sea coast of Turkey ... come to think of it, I guess I could not complain about that, could I? ;)

It sounds to me your time off will nicely coincide with the Horns Spring practice. I'd say you being a site moderator and all, most of your time after the Italy vacation would be well spent standing outside the gates of the practice field to interview players on the long walk back to the showers, I'm pretty sure the Entitled Bus is gone. You could be the next "Insider". Maybe even Jesus would be tracking you down, seems his inside info is pretty washed up. ;)

I think there have been lots of great ideas for you! Seems we have a very well traveled group on here! I may even have to get some info some time for some of my clients.

Think you should wait on Bangkok as lots of unrest there now and cruises even canceling calls there for rest of the year. It is a wonderful place so should definitely visit it, just when political turmoil is less.

When are your 3 months off and when is Italy trip? I may have missed that.

Starting April I am completely free!!!

Ok will check now. Been at my gym, but my stuff is just simple weight and treadmill ,but for me that is a Big Deal!

Touring Italy just seems so expensive after extensive research. Since I will be traveling alone and can't split hotel cost, I am now thinking of Prague and Berlin. 3 nights in each city.

I'm too lazy to go check out costs. But I strongly...and I do mean strongly...suggest everyone visit Ireland in their lifetime. It is seriously one of the most beautiful and relaxing places on Earth. Good people. Untouched Monuments. Incredible nature.

Just a thought.

Ireland is also rainy and cold.

And driving there is nuts -- Stay Left!

I went for a wedding. Which meant I had to drink Guinness with every happy Irish dude I met (they are generally pretty happy). Now, imagine having to navigate those f'n roundabouts, hungover BAD the next morning, sitting on the wrong side of the rental car, with the gear shift at your left hand. It's madness I tell you.

I will always remember this horrible golf shot I hit at #13 Lahinch (http://www.lahinchgolf.com/).

It was in bad weather. I was alone on the course (the gf bailed and sat in the car (running with heat on) so I could finnish the round -- once you get the chills there, it is tough to turn them off). I was wearing rain gear (including hoody over the top as otherwise I couldnt see). I was on the Par 3 #8. I shanked a 5-wood so bad it was headed to the tee at #9. At that exact moment, a 45-mph gust blew -- caught the ball and blew it back not just on the green but at the hole, where it lipped out. That was the closest to a hole-in-one I have ever been and it took and an Act of God. It is funny the things we remember with accuity -- that one shot I can see in my head almost as if I were still standing there. It was shades of the Caddyshack lightening scene.

In this pic \/ you can see a ruin of a castle. There are a couple of these on the courses. Pretty cool setting to be driving into a that backstop.

I chose that course in that town bc they also have surf right there (west coast of Ireland). I try and surf wherever I vacation, if for no other reason than I can tell my friends afterwards, "Yeah, I went out there." Unbelieveably cold water. Hoody/footies/gloves. The Irish surfers were actually thankful for the Gulf Stream.
