Olympic Curling

if they don't finish in the alotted time, do those little metal things pop out of the ice until someone comes up with another dollar in quarters??

when Jake's closed i entered a period of mourning that lasted several years. i'm still not completely over it, to be honest. Jake's was my Cheers.
I was in there a few times. I'm foggy on the location. Was it a block south of Hut's? Didn't they have those heavy fishbowls? Seems like your beer glass still weighed a couple lbs when empty.

Yes it is one of the great viewing events of the winter Olympics - although it ranks with bowling in terms of athleticism.
Most rinks are smoke free zones, and modern society has taken much of the fun out of it. When I first started curling people would actually compete with a cigarette in their mouth and a glass of rye close at hand. You could take it with no ice and it would still stay cold.
Since you curl, does that ever so slight rotation they put on the rock make the path bend or is it the brooms?

yeah, it was on the corner of 5th and rio grande. it had those big heavy frosty glasses and mugs. the shuffleboard table had a left to right "fade" to it that you had to really learn how to play.

my wife could tell i'd been in jake's the second i walked into the house and she took a whiff. the "jake's aroma" was unmistakable.

"you've been in Jake's", she'd say with a distinct sneer curling from her upper lip.

"why yes. Yes, i have! How very clairvoyant of you!", i'd reply with a satisfied smile (bordering on a smirk).

Pee Wee the bartender was an institution. the hamburgers, fries, chicken fried steaks, nachos and enchiladas were the stuff of legend.

there were pictures of dogs on the doors of the bathrooms and that was it. one was an English pointer and one was an Irish setter. it usually took newbies and the ladies asking before they found their way into the proper place.

Ahhh, yes. Old Austin.

If we're being honest, any place with scotch and a couple of Frauleins would qualify as "your Cheers."

The rotation on the stone does makes the path bend (curl). By sweeping you make the ice surface slipperier which has the dual effect of making the stone curl less and making it go further. So really it's the rotation that curls it, and the sweeping helps control it. The sweeping can hugely change the trajectory and distance travelled.

Normally a stone should rotate about 2-3 times while travelling the length of the ice. More than that and it will go fairly straight (it'll just spin and not really grip the ice), less than that and it may dig in or lose rotation before it stops.
