Oklahoma vs. Texas (Oct. 10, 2015) Film Review

I mentioned last week that Heard had been very accurate on his deep throws. LoJoe almost had this one for a big gain, but Jordan Thomas is a really good corner.

LoJoe even got a foot in bounds. The slightest misstep by Thomas and this would have been 1st & Goal inside the 2.

Oklahoma thought they could play Tampa 2 on this 3rd & 9 and keep Heard contained. They were wrong.

Even without that, I'm pretty sure that with time Heard could have hit Beck for the first down. Instead, Flowers nearly let the tackle go, thinking Williams was going to pick him up (he couldn't), and Heard is off to the races. Great job by Doyle picking up the stunt, though.

Wickline needs to explain to Hutchins was an illegal chop block is. Here's two plays on the same series that were damn close.

Heh, Beck was blocking downfield here. This was a designed throw to MJ all the way.

If Heard had pulled this, it might have been a touchdown. Instead, the drive ended with a field goal.

Boyette got after it here, forced Mayfield out (why is Oklahoma trying play-action, downfield throws when they haven't been able to protect?), and Malik and Hill clean up. This fumble was forced by the ground, but if Hill keeps hitting people like this, he's going to force one soon.

I can't see enough of the field to know what we're doing in the secondary but it looks like we might be bracketing Shepard again. Outside of the 50-yarder, his receptions went for 9, 8, 12, 12 and 4 yards.

This is also a pretty sweet blitz design. Moving Duke around lets us do crazy stuff like this. He's lined up over the center at the snap but he's going to end up covering the slot receiver to the boundary, while the guy lined up over that receiver (Hall) blitzes.

Here's the bomb to Shepard against Duke (top of the screen). Mayfield pump-faked, but there wasn't even a double-move by Shepard, so I'm not going to add this to the "Double-Move" Duke tally.

Oklahoma did try a few screens to slow down the rush, and this is the second that I've seen a Texas defensive tackle make the tackle on. Earlier in the thread there was a play made by Tank.

This time, Boyette peeled off and ran it down. The recognition is outstanding.

While we're praising Boyette, here's another nice play.

Oklahoma is reading Cottrell, who rushes upfield, telling Mayfield to pull the ball. He does and runs right into Boyette, who absolutely abused the left guard. Oklahoma also failed to block Jinkens; I'm not sure what the center was expecting here — I guess for Ridgeway to slant into him — but he was pretty useless.

This is wham read, so the key is the 3-technique. Just a little changeup to your typical zone read.

This is a terrible example, but I meant to highlight earlier that Texas' offensive line was doing a really nice job of getting to its second-level blocks on zone plays. Had they done so here — looking at Flowers in particular — this could have been a really nice gain.

If you go up to post #44 you'll see zone bluff, where the fullback shows like he's going to kick out the end (split zone look) but this arcs around to block the next off-color jersey. This looks like the same play but I'm pretty sure it's a designed QB run. Maybe they noticed the QB keep was open last time.

I slowed it down in the replay so you can see the ball-handling a little better, but notice that Bluiett tried to seal the end this time instead of arcing around.

I'm not sure Jinkens wasn't on a called blitz here. I've never seen him do anything like this.

One of the big benefits of these option plays is that you can "block" the unblockable players with the read, but it won't always work on freak athletes like Malik. Just wait until he's a little stronger and can hang on. Nice open-field tackle by Hill.

Here's the series where Oklahoma discovered John Bonney. These clips were separated by one play.

I'm still working my way through the final 10 minutes but it looks like Texas brought in Davante Davis for Duke on the ensuing drive and bumped Duke inside to nickel in place of Bonney. I'm not as optimistic about Bonney's future as I was before the season — every time he's done the things he's good at, he's been penalized. He's instinctive for his age and tries to make up for his lack of athleticism with his physicality, and it just hasn't paid off for him; the refs have been more flag-happy than I expected, though part of that was in the Oklahoma State game, where everyone in burnt orange drew a flag at one point or another. A move to safety is probably in his future.

Here's another look at the almost-inexplicable touchdown Haines gave up. This replay didn't show up until later in the game or I would have posted it the first time around.

Haines gave up because Mayfield was a threat to run . . .. he had Jenkins, should have trusted him. . . .
