Notre Dame must stop Texas quarterbacks Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard
Swoopes threw four interceptions in a 48-10 loss to TCU to close the regular season, then passed for just 57 yards in a loss to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
Swoopes wants to show how much he's grown since the end of last year, and he'll get his first crack with Texas' new-look offense Saturday against Notre Dame. The Irish are ranked No. 11 in both the AP and Amway Coaches polls
"I know I can do it, and just going out and doing it, that's the last thing I've got to do," Swoopes told reporters from Austin. "And I feel like I'll be able to do that."
Swoopes beat out Jerrod Heard for the starting spot this fall. Both will play against the Irish.
"They are a lot further along now this year in Year 2," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said of the Longhorns' offense under Texas coach Charlie Strong. "You start with the quarterback. Tyrone now is much more comfortable at the position. He can throw the ball. In particular, he does a great job pushing the ball down the field. He's got a strong arm and the offense suits him very well. They are in the kind of offense that takes advantage of his skill set.
"… And then another quarterback, Heard, who can run the football. So you have to prepare for both of them. Certainly it's a challenge. We are preparing for a spread offense where tempo is part of it and having two quarterbacks and one that can run the ball effectively."
Texas tweaked its offense in the spring, meaning Notre Dame didn't have many options for film studying.
"We are going to certainly see some things that we haven't seen before," Kelly said. "But we are preparing for Swoopes, who can throw it. We are preparing for a spread offense that has skill."
Swoopes started the final 12 games last season. He completed 58.3 percent of his passes (224-for-384) for 2,409 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Heard redshirted last season.
"You have two quarterbacks that have worked really hard, have competed, have pushed one another," Strong said. "So just really excited about watching those two guys go out and compete."
Strong was an assistant coach for the Irish from 1995-98. He gave Swoopes advice on playing at Notre Dame Stadium.
"He just always tells us, 'You can't let the stage get too big for you, that all those people will be there but they can't step foot on the field. It'll just be us and Notre Dame on the field, so we can't really let that consume us,'" Swoopes said
