NFL DRAFT DAY 2014: "houston texans" on the clock...

Overall, I really like what Dallas did. This will be the first time in well over a decade that Dallas could potentially have a Top 5 Offensive Line. I like what Houston did as well but I'm curious as to what offers they received for the 1st Overall. Dallas needs to be targeting these guys in this order in the 2nd Round: Hageman, Ealy, Jernigan, Crichton and Lawrence. Hopefully one of those guys is there at Pick #47.

Bovada odds Day 2

1/2 that Derek Carr will be the next QB taken;

same odds as Marqise Lee being the 1st WR to go

Couple more notes --

-- Texans listening to offers and are “open to moving the top pick in the second round,†per Adam Schefter

-- If Texans don’t trade the pick, Fresno State QB Derek Carr is considered the “leader in the clubhouse,†(my note - dont buy this)

-- 49ers were interested in LSU WR Odell Beckham Jr., but resisted the temptation to trade up because the price was “too stiff.â€

-- Cleveland coach Mike Pettine says the team still plans to start Brian Hoyer.

Houston had the highest television ratings in the country Thursday night for first-round draft coverage on ESPN and NFL Network.

The two channels combined for a 15.3 Nielsen rating in Houston for an average audience of 350,272 of the area’s 2.2 million TV households as the Texans led off the draft by selecting defensive end Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina. Three Texas A&M players went during the first round, including Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Johnny Manziel to Cleveland, to boost the local audience.

ESPN (6.77) and NFL Network (1.87) combined for an 8.64 rating among the 56 major markets, up 48 percent from 5.85 last year and on pace to set a record for first-day draft coverage with the announcement later today of national numbers. The two networks had a combined 6.42 overnight rating in 2010.

Greenville, S.C., ranked second to Houston among the 56 major markets with a 14.09 rating. Austin ranked fourth at 12.97, San Antonio was seventh at 12.15 and Dallas-Fort Worth was 19th at 9.8.

I could hardly believe that Jerry Jones would be so sensible.

Hopefully that will continue through the draft. A good OL will do a lot toward keeping Romo healthy.

Now for some good defensive picks. Fingers crossed.

Introduced by Chester Pitts..... The Houston Texans take Xavier Su'a-Filo (OG - UCLA) with the 33rd pick.

Su'a-Filo already interviewed on local radio.
He was coached by Mora for 2 seasons
That staff was mostly pro coaches, so something of a head start for the NFL, hopefully.
They say he has a "nasty streak" --(what Somoan doesnt?)
Fills a HUGE need. The OL got both Arian Foster and whoever was at QB killed last season.
Maycock says he was on of the top 6-7 OLs in the entire draft.

And most rankings had him as either the #1 or #2 OG.

"We talked about them getting stronger inside on both sides of the football. Played some tackle, but when they kicked him inside (to guard) it was a completely different picture. He is a plug-and play guy; a Day 1 starter. With (Jadeveon) Clowney on defensive side and Su'a-Filo on offensive side, I think GM Rick Smith is making a statement." -- Mike Mayock

"The league is changing a little bit," Su'a-Filo said. "You see these guys on defense, and they keep running just as fast, or faster. I think that the athleticism of not only the tackles, but the guards, matters now. You look at guys like [New Orleans guard] Jahri Evans, Mike Iupati for the 49ers, Logan Mankins in New England. I like watching all those guys.

"There's something to be said for a left tackle and protecting [a quarterback's] blind side. But now you're seeing a lot more teams pressuring up the middle, trying to get to a quarterback that way, and having athletic guards allows you to reduce that."

Su'a-Filo is more athletic than the typical man-mountain. He grew up playing fullback and linebacker, and might have tried to carve a niche at one of those spots had he not kept growing. As a youngster, he never dreamed of or wanted to play on the offensive line, but his body dictated otherwise.

David Carr was replaced by Matt Schaub in Houston.

Now Schaub is in Oakland.

Who just drafted Derek Carr, who will replace Schaub some day.

The circle of life?
