NFL Coaching Candidates?

I have to *smh* every time I read about a NFL head coach who may be interested in UT. What's his motivation? Not money, because $7M per year is no big shakes to the NFL. Tomlin, Harbaugh (pick one), Carroll, etc. Who is really available and interested in coaching CFB again?

Frankly, I believe one reason they're in the NFL is because they enjoy breaking down game film and X's & O's. Recruiting? A necessary evil, but not one these guys particularly enjoy. Otherwise, they'd still be coaching CFB!

Just my two cents. I'm listening if somebody has a persuasive argument.

I don't want to get anyone excited, but I just saw George Halas deliver a signed contract to Steve Patterson's house. I think it was for $115 million over 3 years.

It's a completely different animal - coaching in NFL. The money is more usually in NFL, and I'd argue the pressure is higher (In Texas there is extreme pressure on Mack, but NFL is truly a national sport - More people know who Tony Romo is than who Case McCoy is....)

It's different coaching - in College you're talking about 18-21 year old kids, the very small majority have the talent to play in the NFL. The NFL is grown men, all more talented, and purely a business. Far biigger egos. The Dez Bryants, Keyshawns, etc. are not prevalent in college. Different level of talent and different level of teaching involved. Even though college coaches put in a ton of time, NFL guys put in more (just ask Steve Spurrier who didn't like matching that commitment)

More apples to oranges than you would think.

When you coach in the NFL it's an 18-20 hour a day job. You don't see your family from the start of training camp through the end of the season. It's a terrible grind. And then you have to worry about salary cap issues and the draft changing your team on a yearly basis. There's a reason why the pay is higher. The life expectancy of an NFL coach is much shorter than a college coach. Not to mention the fact that it's a dog eat dog world in regards to assistants and front office personnel.

As a college coach, in the right situation you can be paid just like the NFL. You can choose your talent and bring in the guys that you want each year. There's no salary cap or draft. If you are able to sign 25 5*, first round draft pick type players then you can. You are dealing with much younger men and a lot of times without the major egos that the NFL possesses.

There are not many jobs in college that could entice an NFL head coach. But Texas is one of them. We can pay them what they are making in the NFL. We can pay their assistants more than anyone else. A guy like John Harbaugh who has reached the pinnacle of the NFL game and might be getting the itch to try something new could be perfect for us. I don't think it's entirely far fetched that a current NFL coach would want to come to Texas. But I'm not going to pin my hopes on one of those guys actually doing it.
