I started this on TOS, but I am going to post that thread on here, verbatim, because I think it bears repeating. I know some of you are members of that site as well, but I will bore you once again.

Because of the Wittek and Heard discussions and the complete omission of Swoopes, this must be said, IMO:

It's well known I am a Swoopes supporter, but I didn't just acquire this position out of thin air. I watched clips of his HS days, last years spring game and the clip of the few times he got to play last year.
Yes, I saw a raw freshman playing QB for one of the top D-1 programs in the nation. He made a couple of mistakes and that was to be expected for a teenager fresh out of high school, IMO.

McCarron and Manziel made more than a few mistakes as well.

But were my eyes lying to me? Did I really not see tremendous athletic ability, a cannon for an arm, throwing accuracy, strength, power and outstanding running ability?

Are you really going to dismiss him because he was inexperienced and did not know all of the throwing progressions and was protected by simple play calls. You are going to disregard what you saw with your own eyes?

Instead, you are trembling with anticipation over the possibility of a USC reject, with two years of real college experience. A kid that almost threw as many interceptions as he did completions?

How about Harsin, who almost pooped his pants when he saw him. Was he just an idiot and didn't have the ability to evaluate?

All I seem to hear about is Heard and Wittek and THAT is ridiculous.

I don't care how talented Heard is, he will still just be a teenager fresh out of HS. He, desperately, needs to RS and doing anything other than that will be a crime, IMO.

Have we learned NOTHING from history?

The biggest thing Swoopes needs is reps. Period. He needs to run the offense in the games, not hand the ball off. He needs what almost all of our backups needed under Mack, but never got, MEANINGFUL playing time. Hopefully the new staff will find a way to get this for him. He is a physical specimen and has the tools, he just needs some game action to fine tune things, because you're not going to get that in practice.

Re swoopes, any judgements on his play in 2013 are silly. god knows what we'd have thought of colt or VY if they'd seen the field as true FR. Hell vince was spotty as a RS FR

That's easy to say but if you go back and dissect the season, there really were no more meaningful snaps to be had. Consider Swoopes was injured and not 100% until about the ISU game. About the only game he could have received more snaps (in hindsight) was the RRR. But even then, ou scored at the beginning of the 4th (if I remember correctly) and made it close enough that a TO could have made a difference.

I really don't fault the coaches for the way they handled TS last season. They didn't really have a choice.

I want to see a coach put a 2nd team qb in the game during mop up duty and run the same offense that was run to get the big lead. Why game plan for a week and then change the plan because you are blowing someones doors off. Put the 2nd, 3rd or 4th team squads in the game and execute the original game plan. If the def can't stop you that's their problem. Qbs do not get better handing the ball off tackle for a quarter.

Go back and watch Majors first game and compare that to anything Swoopes did last year. Yes he is a physical specimen. But it's obvious he does not see the field in the way a QB needs to. He doesn't have it. Another Jamarcus Russel IMO.

please "doc longhorn"... i am not trying to patronize you my pal, but there is undoubtably a reason that you became a doctor in life... you're SMART! you have no reason to try and acquire reassurances as per us members. and heck no... your eyes definitely were not "lying" to you. for when it comes down to "tyrone swoopes" please continue to follow your finely tuned instincts sir.

i shall NEVER forget that evening of the "valero bowl" at the "alamodome". i found myself sitting around a large contingent of university of oregon fans... and i can assure anyone anywhere... that these fans were highly impressed with our "tyrone swoopes". they had no problems voicing their praise of him not only amongst each other... but they were very generous as per their praise of "tyrone" to me in person.... since i was clad from head to toe in "burnt orange".

i was very impressed as per the "oregon" contingent. as i departed the stadium that evening, it became very clear to me... just why "oregon" is so very successful.

HELL YES! I've been saying that for years. Every major program keeps running their game planned office with backups in no matter the score. Mack was always afraid he'd hurt the other teams feelings. To the detriment of our program.

I don't know whether Swoopes can be a good Div 1 QB or not; the jury is out in my mind. I do toss this question out: why are the coaches interested in offering a scholarship to Wittek? Could be they see something in Swoopes that concerns them. Or I prefer to think they want 3 QBs capable of competing and let the competition sort out a starter and backup.

I too hope UT is in a position to redshirt Heard.

Whoever is the best will play. Swoopes' athletic prowess is eye popping. What I haven't been able to determine is if he has the will to win a la VY.

Comparing him to Major is tough because he (MA) was a savant. The way I look at it is if Heard is better then great. If Ash really comes back and plays to his ability then great. What will be telling is if Swoopes can accept that he is in a competition and thrive.

I expect Coach Strong to not name a starter until next year. If he were to name one this spring then we should assume it was obvious that whoever that qb is displayed himself to be head and shoulders above the rest.

How sweet it is to have too many quarterbacks.

Major was a redshirt. We have no idea how he would have performed as a true FR. Sorry pal. Speaking absolutes after watching a few plays of a guy as a true FR and declaring 'he doesn't have it' is silly.

Just another thing to like about Mack. Towards the end of his tenure, I couldn't even watch his pressers. The man was a salesman, not a coach.

LOL - Thank you, kind sir, for your compliments. My thread was not aimed at you or people like you. It was mostly aimed at those that have flatly stated that Swoopes doesn't have what it takes to be our QB. I dislike flat contentions like this. Particularly when I don't think they are doing anything but parroting others opinions who were talking out of their butts in the first place.

Now, the reality of it is that Swoopes could very well be nothing but a bust and I will have to eat crow. Hell, I've had to do it before. But the truth is, we all should hope and pray that I am right and Swoopes is the second coming of VY - or something close to him.

I just think those that are dissing him simply have nothing to hang their hats on, whereas I have seen with my own eyes what he can do. It was not much, for sure, but for what little he got to play it was damn good.

Oh, I think the answer is very clear. It is also why they are trying to groom Oligalibaba as a QB as well. Number one, Wittek has not signed with UT and the jury is still out on that one. Number two, if Ash goes down, that only leaves Swoopes and a high school kid as backups. The HS kid needs the year of RS and Wittek simply improves our QB depth. Oligalibaba would be no different than Swoopes or Ash were in their freshmen years. And that is scary.
