AUSTIN – No. 9-seed Texas used a five-run third inning to defeat Houston in Game 6 of the NCAA Austin Regional, forcing a do-or-die elimination game at McCombs Field at 6:30 p.m.

The Longhorns’ 5-2 win served as an offensive explosion for a group that had failed to score that many runs in 13 of its past 14 games. Houston was able to produce eight hits against Texas pitcher Miranda Elish, but it left eight runners on base and hit only 2 of 12 with runners in scoring position.

UT's game-changing third inning outburst featured a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Lauren Burke, a two-run single by junior third baseman Shannon Rhodes Rhodes, and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Kaitlyn Washington. Burke also scored from third on a passed ball.

Houston senior Savannah Heeber went six innings and allowed five earned runs and eight hits and walked three with one strikeout.

Elish, who threw 229 across a pair of Saturday starts, three 106 more for her third straight complete game. She allowed nine hits and two earned runs and struck out five with no walks.
