NEW YORK – A 22-5 first-half run propelled No. 2 seed Texas to an 81-66 win over No. 5 seed Lipscomb in Thursday’s NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden.
The Longhorns (21-16) were led by seniors Dylan Osetkowski and Kerwin Roach II, who combined for 35 points, 16 rebounds, 14 assists and five steals in their final collegiate game. Both were named to the all-tournament team, while Roach earned most outstanding player honors.
During this NIT run, Texas defeated South Dakota State, Xavier (in overtime) and Colorado at the Erwin Center before moving onto the semifinals at MSG. The Longhorns finally got the best of TCU Tuesday in a 58-44 win, setting up Thursday’s clash with Lipscomb, this year’s co-Atlantic Sun regular-season champion.
Some notes and takeaways from UT’s NIT championship game triumph:
Jaxson Hayes will decide on his future soon.

In the locker room following the game, Hayes said he has not yet reached a decision on his future.
“I have to meet with my parents,” Hayes said. “They’re coming in next weekend. Me, them and the coaches are all meeting and we’re going to make a decision according to how we feel. Then go from there.
“I feel like we’ll be deciding kind of soon. We’re not going to rush it but we’re going to talk it over.”
Hayes said rehab had been going well and he expects to be near full health in “two-to-three weeks” – just in time for...
