Y'all-
Before there is a great deal of "gnashing of teeth" is it OK if I tell everyone what the "silver lining" is with this embarrassing, blow-out loss in front of DOZENS of blue chip recruits? I have been asking around about "what Plan B entails should Saban spurn us at the altar?" The truth of the matter is I keep hearing, "we will find a quality coach." My reply is, "whom?" To which I get an answer that goes along the lines of "we will get a top coach that is a rock star!" Well great, "WHOM?!" The truth of the matter is that I haven't heard ANYTHING on whom we would interview to replace Mack. Sure, I've heard the names of Briles, Shaw, Gruden, Tomlin, Carroll, Harbaugh, etc. just like the rest of you. But I have been told confidentially, "If Saban doesn't actually come to Austin then I believe that the candidate that we will hire will come out of nowhere and be completely off the radar."
Well that sounds fine and all, but the truth of the matter is I AM A BUSINESSMAN. Just like the rest of you fine gentlemen that are in business yourselves, you KNOW that things DON'T JUST WORK THEMSELVES OUT! Consequently, up until today on the back of my mind I had a concern that if Saban DOESN'T come to Austin, then Mack becomes the de facto "Easy Button." After today, Mack can no longer be considered for ANYTHING associated with the University of Texas at the end of this season. PERIOD. As I mentioned in the outset, with the performance of this team in front of a HUGE number of recruits, how can anyone on this current coaching staff go to any of these recruits and tell them we can take them to the next level with a straight face would be a BOLD FACED LIE! How ANYONE on this staff can insinuate that they will be here in '14 or '15 to honor these scholarships that are being offered up right now IS A BOLD FACED LIE!
So, now that I have pointed out how we can't sink any lower than where we are today the good news is that EVEN IF Saban doesn't come, change is coming. PERIOD. At this point, pine box or parade or whatever you call it, Mack Brown is finished at UT. PERIOD. Yes, yes, I and many like myself have been saying this for quite some time. But if you needed ANY MORE proof today, well you sure as hell got it with an embarrassing 38-13 BEAT DOWN in your own back yard. Getting your a$$ kicked in front of BMD's that may be feeling sentimental about the old guy, indifferent, disaffected, young fans that have higher expectations of the program than where it sits today, and a finally the HUGE group of recruits that are VITAL to the rebuilding effort of this program, well, that isn't a way to keep being paid as the 2nd Highest Head Coach in College Football today. Oh, don't discount when the dust finally settles and Mack has his next press conference for him to spin that "all of our goals are still in front of us" just as he did today in his post game presser. With the West Virginia loss to KU, we'll probably also hear about the over-time win in Morgantown taking a bite out of BOTH West Virginia and Texas because both WVU and Texas fought so hard- "it's just too brutal to come back from a fight like that so soon!" I'm sure that we'll hear about key injuries and other excuses that none of us have even thought of yet. But at this point, all of that BS is now falling on deaf ears even with the believers who have now seen the light. Oh, and before anyone panics let me reiterate, as of right now from everything I've been told Nick Saban will be the next Head Coach at the University of Texas starting next season.
Now that I've hopefully settled any concerns pertaining to Saban coming to Austin next season, on to observations:
1. Coming into a HUGE game like this, I would have expected on the initial kickoff that our kicker to either put the damned ball into the North End Zone OR at the very minimum have our "pumped up" coverage team to effectively cover the kickoff. I sure didn't expect our guys to let the opening kickoff to be run out to the 42 yard line. Well, they did and it was indicative of things to come during the course of the game.
2. FACTOID: From '98-'10, The University of Texas allowed (4) games where the opposition has scored 38 points or more. From '11- today our defense has allowed the opposition to score 38 points (5) times. This is trending in the wrong direction!
3. I was pleased with our first defensive series however that initial return but us in crappy field position from the outset. I have to admit, our defense may have been torched at times, out of position at times, susceptible to QB draws time and time and time again, BUT they didn't give up. Had Manny Diaz been coaching our defense our guys WOULD have quit after the 2nd qtr.
4. Not giving up or not, Mike Gundy was a classy gentleman today as a coach. Okie Lite could have hung 50 on us if he had wanted to do so.
5. Major Applewhite starts the game with (5) straight running plays to Malcolm Brown. 10 of the first 13 plays run by our offense were running plays to Brown. WHY? Were we wanting Okie State to line-up 9 in the box to stop our running game so that we could unleash our vaunted passing attack on the Pokes? Furthermore, you could see Brown breathing hard while looking at the sidelines after the 3rd straight run of the game- how about a breather for Brown and bring Bergeron in for a couple of plays? Case McCoy as starting QB or not, after 10 games it's evident that Major Applewhite is WAY out of his league right now as an Offensive Coordinator AND as a Play Caller. All of us can grasp the concept of running a play to set up another play later in the game. There was a critical point in the game where a running play was run with Daje Johnson for a nice 6 yard gain. But to come back ON THE VERY NEXT PLAY and run a reverse to Marcus Johnson out of the same play just previously ran was just silly. The timing of that play was just too soon! Consequently, the nice gain by Daje was negated by a 5 yard loss on the very next play with the reverse to Marcus Johnson on the very next play! Bottom line, Case McCoy is having to convert on a 3rd and 10- what are the odds of that happening succeffully? The University of Texas does not pay coaches for "on the job learning." The Offensive Coordinator position at the University of Texas needs to be a mature, well-established X's & O's coach with a proven track record as OC. The University of Texas simply deserves better at that position.
6. Say what you want about how $hitty our fans are, but there is NOTHING entertaining about the brand of football that we play at the University of Texas today nor has there been anything entertaining about the way we have played football at the University of Texas for several years now. Take a look at how our boys play football and compare that to the way Baylor plays football and tell me if fans wouldn't be more lively, entertained, and into the game if we were running an offense as effectively as they do in Waco. I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM TYPING THIS!!
7. Jackson Jeffcoat was all over the field today.
8. So was Dalton Santos
9. Chelf ran for 85 yards against Iowa State. The next week Chelf ran for 88 yards against Tech. Obviously the kid can run the ball. After several successful quarterback draws being run time and time again , how Clint Chelf was able to convert a 3rd & 10 into a Quarterback Draw good for an 18 yard rushing TD is beyond me! Did we just not think the kid would be able to run the ball against us? Our defense just has an uncanny knack of making opposing QB's look like Heisman candidates week-in, week-out.
10. Missed tackles still haunt our guys in the secondary. Early in the game, Byndom missed on a COSTLY sack that allowed Chelf to flip the ball to his back and gain 20 plus yards on the place instead of being the 10 yard loss that it should have been!
11. Before the season began, at a Longhorn Foundation Luncheon I asked Stacey Searels how it feels to have your offensive line called soft? He replied, "if you want to piss an offensive line coach get pissed-off, call his offensive line soft!" NOTE TO STACEY SEARELS: "Your offensive line is SOFT!" Get pissed if you want big fella- I call 'em like I see 'em!
12. Duke Thomas is a liability in our secondary. For that matter, outside of Diggs our entire secondary is a liability to our defense. Skins on the wall with guys in the NFL or not, I am going to say this and probably be cussed for it but here goes: Duane Akina may have put a bunch of DB's into the League but RARELY has he gotten that NFL caliber talent to play collectively as a unit while he has had that talent on campus. We need a refresh at the Secondary Coach position as well as every other Position Coach in the Program today.
13. Daje giveth. Daje taketh away. Today just wasn't his day. It is the coaches' responsibility and recognize this and adjust accordingly which brings me to Jalen Overstreet. Overstreet was supposed to be our "insurance policy" if Daje ever "flamed-out" during the course of the season. Well this would have been a GREAT day to bring in Overstreet and see what he could do. I guess that is in the same category as "preparing a package of plays for Tyrone Swoops to run during a game so that burning his red-shirt made sense." Oh well.
14. Coming out for the 2nd half it was IMPERATIVE that we come out and put some points on the board. We did just that. Problem is that our defense had to come out and prevent Okie Lite from scoring on THEIR offensive possession. Well they didn't.
15. During this 6-0 run, Case McCoy has led this team to the best of his abilities. There is a reason folks have been critical of the kid and his capabilities. Today the gunslinger didn't get away with the same stuff he had been avoiding in the past few weeks. He came up snake eyes at the wrong time today. Whether you want to call it a "Perfect Storm" or a "$hit Sandwich", if you follow the game of football you know eventually you don't get away with some of the things that he has been getting away with. The fact of the matter is that the University of Texas should NEVER be in a situation where someone of the talent-level of Case McCoy is even the 2nd Team QB. This Head Coach and Offensive Coaching Staff has made their collective bed.. When I think of Wood, Brewer, or even Gilbert I shake my head at the thinking surrounding how these young men were brought along and how their situations were handled. Finally, yes I realize Tyrone Swoopes came in in mop-up time and did some nice things. But when I look at his legs (and his arm strength), if we have a Sr. QB that can't throw the ball and makes bone-headed decisions well then why not give the Freshman a chance to show something? Hell, what difference does it make if we get beat 38-13 or 41-13, at the end of the day it was OBVIOUS that Case McCoy was not going to get it done with 11 minutes left in the 4th qtr. The decision-making of this staff is just mind numbing.
QUICK NOTE: Deloss Dodds being on the sidelines consoling Case McCoy is a scene I am glad I won't ever see again after this season. There are several folks that I am tired of seeing, and Deloss Dodds is at the top of that list.
16. For a guy that has been in the the Dog House in recent weeks, Joe Bergeron had a nice game. He never quit. Although JB only had 49 yards rushing, he averaged nearly 5 yards per carry with not much help from his Offensive Line today.
17. Malcolm Brown earned damned near EVERY ONE of the 73 yards he got on the ground today. 2.9 per rush isn't impressive but the guy didn't get much help from his Offensive Line , QB, or OC today.
18. Anthony Fera will be SORELY missed come next season.
19. This is a POORLY coached team that was POORLY prepared for this game today.
20. I'm tired of the Mack Brown spin. After a coming off a 5-7 season we were told by Mack back in '10 that "you'd better get on board because we are going to be playing for a National Championship in '13!" We were also told, "when we were losing out on top recruits we were told that we were going after a different type of recruit than we were before." Well, after watching 3 years of this "process" I realize that we have been taken for a ride to simply buy more time and appease an upset fan base. During a Press Conference, Mack Brown can read off statistics with the best of them. It's the X's & O's part DURING the game that he seems to have problems with. Well that quality is fine if you are a statistician or a politician, but if you are a football coach then that is a problem!
As hard as it is to accept, at the end of the day the "Easy Button" just became a "non-starter option" should Saban not pan-out in the off-season. The charms that Mack held over Deloss will not work with an immune up-start in Steve Patterson as AD. And that is is GREAT thing! Do I think there was a possibility of Mack coming back prior to today if Saban doesn't come to Texas? On the back of my mind, ANYTHING with Mack Brown could be spun into a possibility. After today, it is evident that Mack Brown is just TOO expensive for the University of Texas to afford. There is just too much at risk today. And for all of those supporters of Mack Brown that thought he was piecing together a resume showing that this program had "turned the corner" on its way back to relevance, well those folks got a strong does of reality today!
