My problem with Case and this offense

My last disgust with this offense and Case. Here is my biggest issue. The staff has had most of this year to see, recognize and understand the limitations Case brings to the table. It is not Case's fault. It is what he is. Despite all this time, the staff has literally done nothing to try to create an offense around Case that can move the ball short of simply handing it off deep up the middle. There is no misdirection, no trick plays, no counters,no bubble screen, no shovel pass etc. We barely do anything safe and certainly nothing risky and we literally have no chance of even semi regularly moving the ball up the field. You cant tell me that Art Briles, Malzahn or even Stoops wouldnt put in new schemes to work around Case and his limits. Our whole scheme is to hope we can pound it up the middle. Team after team loses a QB that the whole team is built around and they often dont miss a beat during a year. We actually regressed this year offensively. Probably never in history has a QB 2 weeks in a row had more interception return yards than completion yards. Each of the 3 Qb's on OU is as bad as Case and they are in a BCS game.

That's it lets move on to a new era.

Applewhite was in over his head. Harsin knew how to control Case and utilize the tight end position as a relief valve. His creativity was welcomed as well. Once Ash went down, Major had no adjustments outside of a fluke game vs. OU.

Applewhite is a joke, Case should have never been offered a scholarship at UT, S & C turned out to be a fraud...just a total mess right now.

Case McCoy is also at fault for a LOT of the problems he's faced as a QB. He's COMPLETELY uncoachable (witness the fact that his mechanics haven't changed in even the slightest in 4 years at Texas). He thinks he's got a really good arm, when the fact is that it's AWFUL, combine that with the middle school mechanics and you've got a recipe for disaster. He's tried to quit on this team multiple times (refusing to go back into the 11 OU game, trying to transfer multiple times, etc). He decided to go on a mission trip rather than stay and get some summer practice with the team.

It's true he should NEVER have been given a scholarship, and it's also true that Mack should have cut bait a few years ago, but SOME of the blame has to go to Case.

I agree, OP, even with the limitations of Case there is no reason that the offense could not have been tailored better to who he his. Especially when you consider the stable of running backs we have. Hell Florida lost to a team that did not complete a pass! Unfortunately even the running game, as good as it was in spurts, was very misused. How many times did we see JG running up the gut into the teeth of the defense only then to bring MB come in and run a sweep. How many deep outs did we see Case "try" to throw only for them to land no where near the receiver or get intercepted.

In my opinion Applewhite is a plus one type of guy. He probably brings some great ideas to the table and has some great concepts, but he has no vision when it comes to building a game plan or play calling. My guess is Applewhite would suck at chess. He only seems to think about the next move, not several moves ahead.

With the limitations Case has, the dropped passes by the receivers and tight end did us in on several drives. Can't recall David Thomas dropping a bad pass from VY.

The first part of your statement is true. (To be fair though, only 1 pass dropped by a WR would have been a 1st down, the INT on a tip ball was a HORRIFIC throw).

The 2nd part of your statement is hilariously wrong. David Thomas had big drops in big games all throughout 2005 (and some in 2004 as well), including a tipped ball for an INT against ATM.

I agree with the assessment of Major......that he has been a disappointment is an understatement. I really thought he was going to kill it, but as the season progressed I lost total confidence in him. As the OP said, we did not adjust to Case's "skills" (if you can call them that), and continued to run an offense that Case was not capable of running. That is on Major.

After last night's game, I breathed two sighs of relief, one because Mack was gone, but also one because Case was gone. We won't have to witness anymore games like the Baylor game and the Alamo Bowl.

To clarify, two passes to Swaim and two drops. Not good when you have a QB like Case.
