What kind of money are we talking about for these late round picks? Enough to bypass one more year of college?

Let's do a quick recap:

(Draft position & team in blue)

Underclassmen draft eligible

  • Morgan Cooper RHP #62 LA Dodgers
  • Nick Kennedy LHP #146 CO Rockies
  • Kyle Johnston RHP #193 WA Nationals
  • Brett Boswell INF #236 CO Rockies
  • Tyler Schimpf RHP #396 SF Giants
  • Patrick Mathis OF #661 HOU Astros
  • Connor Mayes RHP #720 KC Royals
  • Travis Jones OF #870 KC Royals
  • Beau Ridgeway RHP UNDRAFTED
  • Michael Cantu C UNDRAFTED
  • Kody Clemens INF UNDRAFTED
Graduating Longhorns to watch

  • Kacy Clemens IF #249 TOR Blue Jays
  • Zane Gurwitz OF/INF #775 LA Angels
  • Jon Malmin LHP #929 LA Angels

Longhorn Commits to watch

  • Tristen Lutz OF (HS)-Likely gone #34 MIL Brewers
  • Landon Leach RHP (HS)-Likely gone #37 MIN Twins
  • Blake Pflughaupt LHP (JUCO) #799 TB Rays
  • Donny Diaz RHP (JUCO) #701 BO Redsox
  • Kamron Fields OF/RHP (HS) UNDRAFTED
  • Matteo Bocchi RHP (JUCO) UNDRAFTED
  • Chris Fearon RHP (JUCO) UNDRAFTED
  • Brandon Ivey LHP (JUCO) UNDRAFTED
  • Cole Quintanilla RHP (HS) UNDRAFTED
  • Tristan Stevens RHP (JUCO) UNDRAFTED
  • Turner Gaunt INF (HS) UNDRAFTED
  • Masen Hibbeler INF (JUCO) UNDRAFTED
  • Bennett Inoff INF (HS) UNDRAFTED

What this all means

  • Texas had 11 players from this year's team drafted.  This ties the most that the Horns have had drafted since 2007, when they had 11 drafted.  Of those 11 in 07, 9 inked contracts, 2 came back.
  • Texas will lose commits Lutz and Leach to the Brewers and Twins.
  • Cooper, Kennedy, Johnston, Boswell and Schimpf are all very likely gone.
  • Mathis is still up in the air, although word is that he may be leaning towards signing with the Astros.
  • Mayes is also a question mark on returning. (EDIT: Word now is that he will sign)
  • My guess is that Travis Jones comes back, and JUCO LHP Pflughaupt & RHP Diaz come to Texas for next season.

Well, it varies.  To give you an example, and these were 2015 numbers:

Top 5:  Avg $6,295,100

5-10:   Avg $3,506,560

11-20: Avg $2,644,910

21-42: Avg $1,851,100

Rnd 2: Avg $1,064,539

Rnd 3: Avg $652,847

Rnd 4: Avg $469,550

Rnd 5: Avg $351,583

Rnd 6: Avg $263,250

Rnd 7: Avg $197,960

Rnd 8: Avg $171,363

Rnd 9: Avg $160,023

Rnd 10: Avg $150,860

Level/Monthly Salary

SS:  $1,150

Low A: $1,300

High A: $1,500

AA: $1,700

AAA: $2,150

40-man: $40,750

One thing to keep in mind; a decision like this for an underclassman, (as well as the HS seniors,) is a tremendous one for the family.  Playing baseball competitively has a relatively short window for all players.  College and the opportunity for a degree will always be there.  If the guy wants to chase his dream and go to the next level, then I say, go for it.  I'd advise my son the same way.  Look, you want to take a few years off and see where the spikes & mitt leads you, by all means-go do it.  The worst thing, IMO, is for the kid to pass up the opportunity and look back in 20 years and wake up every day saying "what if."  Give it your all, and hang 'em up when you're ready.  It's not always about the money or the degree.  Just my 2-cents.

Word coming out that Diaz & Pflughaupt are leaning towards signing. I'll keep my ears peeled and let y'all know what else I hear on this front. I think they are in the catbird seat for next season at UT, and could seriously improve their draft spot after next season.

You have to think the money at their spots isn't enough to justify giving up 2 years of eligibility. If they were juniors I'd for sure tell them to go. But only being sophomores I'd stay one year.

Thanks for that breakdown JoeyWa.  How many rounds are in the MLB draft?  Coppell had a kid (Cody Masters) drafted, from what I can tell, in the 40th round?  Does that sound right?  Something like the 1211th pick?  And if that's the case, what would his likely scenario be regarding college vs going pro?

The 40th round is the final round of the underclassman draft.  He's a HS kid, and taken there by the Red Sox is a roll of the dice for the Sox.  He will likely go to college for a few years and try to improve his draft stock, and try again as a Junior in college.  Really cool that he got drafted, but that's the fifth to last pick in the entire draft.  There is not much bargaining power he would have at that spot.

Thanks Joey.  I was trying to explain to my daughter that just because he was drafted doesn't mean that he's going pro.  And that more than likely because of his late round status that he'd still go to college.  Where I think I'm inaccurate is I told her that when he decides to turn pro that the Red Sox would have his rights.  Is a player in his position, who's drafted and decides to go to college, actually re-drafted possibly by a different team every year their eligible or does the team that drafted him initially actually hold his rights?

He would be redrafted. Most of the top picks in the draft from colleges were drafted previously by other teams out of high school.

A few Thursday afternoon updates:

******************************************************************

(Signing info courtesy Dustin McComas at Orangebloods.com)

Players (underclassmen or commits) who have agreed to terms with their MLB teams

  • Jones has agreed to sign with the Royals.  He's gone.
  • Pflughaupt has agreed to sign with the Rays.  He's gone.

Players (underclassmen or commits) who have not yet agreed to terms:

  • Cooper: he will sign with the Dodgers
  • Kennedy: high probability he will sign with the Rockies
  • Johnston: high probability he will sign with the Nationals
  • Boswell: he will sign with the Rockies
  • Schimpf: high probability he will sign with the Giants
  • Mathis: high probability he will sign with the Astros
  • Mayes: high probability he will sign with the Royals
  • Lutz: he will sign with the Brewers
  • Leach: he will sign with the Twins
  • Diaz: wavering at this point about signing with the Red Sox
*********************************************************

My take-

From the looks of things, all 11 of the current UT players that were on the roster and got drafted will probably sign major league contracts.  Mathis may be the one that could return, but that's a very small percentage.

So, about that rebuild.......

Pierce and Co. have several JUCO players lined up to fill the pipeline and will need solid production immediately from them. (This is a very smart move IMO, and shows that this staff has been thinking ahead of the immediate season when they were hired last summer.)

Newcomer Kamron Fields could make an early impact as well, depending on how the staff wants to utilize him.  There still may be a few late adds with the opening of additional roster spots vacated by the departure of Sosa and the players listed above.

Let's look at the possible lineup for next year:

P: Kingham, Ridgeway, Henley, Shugart, McKenzie, O'Hara, Robinson, Bocchi, Fearon, Ivey, Quintanilla, Stevens

C: McCann, Cantu, Gauntt (FR)

1B: Hibbeler, Zubia (FR)

2B: Kody, Baker

SS: Hamilton

3B: Reynolds

OF: Todd, Shaw, Fields (FR), Hibbeler

There will also be some other frosh that are coming to The 40 that could challenge for time.

The keys to 2018 will be three-fold

  1. Leadership; with the departure of Kacy, Jones and possibly Mathis, this team will have to find new leaders.  Look to Kody, Baker, Shaw, McCann and Cantu to step up.  Any combination of that group will have to.
  2. Pitching; losing so many arms to the draft creates a need for innings, and not just a body on the bump.  The remaining staff of Shugart, Ridgeway, Henley, Kingham, McKenzie, O'Hara and Parker Joe Robinson will have to produce.  The JUCO and FR arms will also need to come in and be productive immediately.
  3. Team; with so many additions of new faces and personalities, these guy will have to gel as a team early in the fall.   We should see how this is working out by the time we get to the Orange/White Fall World Series.

Stay tuned, Seamheads, this is gonna be a brand new Longhorn team, and I think there is a lot to be excited about!

HookEm!

This is correct.  Thanks TB!

Looks like Mayes has signed as well.

Is Texas even fielding a baseball team next year? :D :D :D :D
Message boards, Twitter & Internet fans are a funny bunch. First they're clamoring for an entire roster turnover. Then they line up on ledges because the draft takes too many good players, so it's all doom and gloom.

Very difficult to get a steady read on the collective bunch. 😂

IDMAS Who we put on the field next year. No one holding an aluminum bat should hit below 260. And that is being generous.
