SignUp Now!That was after he called Joe to inquire if Mack was available and was told "NO, YOU AS****E!"Didn't the Nebraska AD already announce last week that he fully supported Pelini and that Pelini would be back next year?
Was that a quote from Mack? I agree Case isnt a good QB but Mack's not the type to just come out and say thatJamail also spoke to Brown at length Saturday night. “Mack said he was proud of our boys,” Jamail said. “You can’t win without a good quarterback, and we don’t have one.”
Just what we all need, another coaching controversy involving a coaching position that is not officially open and both involving Mack Brown!! LMFAOI admit I haven't read through this whole thread, but Kirk Bohls is thinking Nebraska is interested in Brown as well. Sorry if it's been posted already.
We have seen Akers go this route and failUpdate:
I spoke to my Nebraska contact this morning (A former NU player) and told him everyone thinks the Mack to NU rumor is "ridiculous". He points out that the move to the BiG has killed NU's vital Texas recruiting base and prospects for the future because NU is way behind the curve in other recruiting areas of the Midwest. He said he is not for the Mack scenario because he lives in Houston and knows how inept Mack is as a coach. However, he says that certain BMDs at Nebraska believe that Pelini is not the answer and that he cannot recruit because he projects such a "jerk" image. The thinking is that hiring Mack would instantly solve the recruiting problem because no one has better relationships with Texas high school coaches and could better develop relationships with high school coaches in other areas. No other high profile hire could solve their recruiting issues the way that Mack could. NU just has to insure that Mack gets very strong coordinators.
I asked him about the TV alternative for Mack. He pointed out that it would probably come down to money. Mack gets $4MM+ at NU or around $1 million at ESPN. He says the word is that Mack hates the LHN media stuff and still wants to succeed as a coach to refute his critics at UT. He says that the pressure on Mack would not be nearly as great at NU. He hopes that Mack goes the TV route to avoid Mack at NU.
All FWIW. I doubt it happens but there is a certain perverse logic.
Of course Mack would be a disaster anywhere he coached. However:We have seen Akers go this route and fail
I suspect Mack would fail miserably at NU, he can not coach, and it is unlikely he will be able to recruit to NU
The recruiting problem for NU is several fold
1 They stopped being able to take partial qualifiers, they used to get great athletes that coudnt go to other good schools
2 They used to get good juco's, Mack has never been a good juco recruiter
3 they used to play almost 1/2 of their away games in Texas or Oklahoma, so the kids family could come watch them, play, no longer
4 In addition, they can only be seen on TV in Texas maybe in 1/3 of their games, another recruiting death blow
For NU to be relevant they need a young charismatic coach that can recruit the JUCO route and win some battles in the midwest against the other big 10 schools, AND they must be able to scheme and up coach a bunch of 3 star players.
I believe Mack would be a disaster at NU, perhaps he knows it too, but maybe his ego will not accept it.
I think Macks reputation has been severely tarnished in Texas and the coaches here would not likely rec the kids going that far out of state , where the family can not see themOf course Mack would be a disaster anywhere he coached. However:
Akers never had the high school coaching network and relationships in Texas that Mack has in place.
Mack successfully recruited at NC with a far worse profile and tradition than NU.
Mack never had to recruit JCs at Texas until he stopped getting everyone he wanted and stopped effectively evaluating. He could adapt.
NU has systemic recruiting issues that no aggressive young coach is going to quickly resolve without a large network already in place.
None of their BiG competitors are getting partial qualifiers either so they must adapt and compete.
Schools from all over the country are successfully recruiting in Texas but NU is not. Mack has the relationships to change that dynamic.
NU might need a guy like Mack for all the reasons you mentioned and it is the only significant FBS platform that might accept Mack.
I doubt Mack to NU happens because of the move from Austin to Lincoln or Mack not needing the money or being too lazy to start over or digging in his heals and staying at UT to finish wrecking the situation but it is being discussed.
