Guys, is this old age kicking in?

I can Cross Fit twice a day and no back pain, but when I walk for 30 minutes, my back becomes tight and painful.

Aging sucks.

I slept on a cot all week last week in the middle of the woods and I am still hobbling around.  The tempurpedic mattress saved me when I got home.  Hopefully you didn't pull anything.

I have had to deal with this since I was in high school. At the end of my Senior year in high school I could not sit down for more than an hour or drive for more more than an hour without severe pain upon trying to stand up again.  Over time I have had to learn to live with it.  This is one of the most f##ked up issues that anybody will have to deal with in their life.  Like allergies, it is something that you just have to learn to deal with.  I am going to sit back and wait for the first wave of  "you old fart" posts and jokes to pass us on by.  Then, after that. I will respond with what I have learned about such things through the years.

I've been battling with this since 1995... I workout and stretch and that helps... All it takes is a golf or baseball swing and it can come back in a hurry. I think part of the equation is age and I'm much older than you.... ;)  Lots of core work seems to help...

Lol. This one is easy. Not age related, most likely. Probably cross fit related. If you have to keep doing so much crossfit, find a physical therapist who can help you develop a stretching routine and to work in some additional exercises to deal with your muscle imbalances.

Camping where? Never camped before. Seems like a fun idea.

Pain is just weakness leaving your body.  The day I wake up with absolutely no pain, I'm gonna start worrying, because that means I'm probably dead.

Seriously, cut out one of those xfit classes and substitute Iyengar Yoga for it.  Best use of your fitness time there is.

I took my son to Summer Camp in Talihina, Oklahoma (planned trip with his Boy Scout Troop). We go camping at least once a month, almost always in Texas, and it typically involves kayaking, canoeing or hiking.

It rained and rained on us for the better part of the week but here's a pic from one day we got a reprieve....

I have had severe back pain to the point of not being able to walk and was basically diagnosed with a pinched sciatic nerve caused by a compressed disc. It happens as you get older and usually has something to do with contact sports or contact driving (sudden trauma to the spine). Went to a doc and he said medical doctors really couldn't do anything for me except pain medication. He said there is surgery, but it is only effective about 50% of the time. Then he said his advice was to go see a Chiropractor (very unusual for a doc to say). So I did some research and found one with a sterling reputation and I went to see her. We did xrays, she did a diagnosis and put together a plan and she told me I would be pain free in 8 weeks. I was pain free in 8 weeks and have been since, 2.5 years. I get adjusted once a week for maintenance, but I ride my bike, stretch, walk and all of it is pain free. My Chiro is very into whole body health and root causes, she doesn't believe in pharma very much and is passionate about keeping people out of pain and active again. Best advice I ever got from a doc.

I've had lower back pain issues for many years now. Usually long walks trigger my pains but when I play active sports, no pain at all.

I'll just contribute this to old age. Will look into new chiropractor.

What else should I prepare myself for besides menopause and knee replacement?

That looks cool. The closest thing to camping was staying at a hotel after a day at Yosemite. But frankly, I need my amenities.

LOL! You are way too young for Menny and knees.  Seriously, you might look at your shoes.  This could be your real problem.

My son grew up a bit on that trip (he's 12) and it did some good to get away from the computer.  Ease into the camping thing and you might dig it.  Some of the best meals I have cooked/eaten have been in the outdoors....

There are these folks called doctors. They are way more helpful than a message board. Some of you are describing herniated discs, and you do not have to live with the associated pain.

You might have custom some shoe inserts fitted by a pro (for your walking shoes)

I have a close friend who swears this cured her back pain.

Also, by coincidence of timing, I ordered one of these which arrived last week

Check it out when you get a chance (I dont yet have enough experience to say yea or nay)

I used to be very skeptical of Chiropractors but I've been living with LBP since I injured it in the Army in '96 and swear by them now. I used Dr. mac over at American Chiropractic and am currently under treatment. The key to avoiding severe episodes is to build up your muscles in your lower back. I have a back machine I use although I have not used it in over a year due to moving in with my now wife and it being covered with boxes. Needless to say, I will be clearing off the boxes as soon as I am able to lift them again. Sciatica is a bitch!! It sucks not being able to tie you own shoes.

I also got a annual membership at The Joint, which is a somewhat new chiro chain.

Once set up as a member, you walk in, scan a key card, and they usually get you in quite quicky.

When the card is scanned, your charts and info pop up on a screen in the back for the doctor.

And you can actually get in and out of there within 15m - door to door.

No appointment necessary, you can go whenever you want or need.  Also, they have multiple locations which can help if you are across town somewhere, get some pain and want it fixed immediately.

It's a pretty sweet deal, IMO as it brings the cost down considerably, if you do the annual like I did.

Here is a little info if interested

and here is one i go to  http://riveroaks.thejoint.com/

-- another video commercial from me, two in one day and in the same thread - i may need to go see the chiro to relieve the stress that caused me

muscles in your back will help not at all with a herniated disc. crazy talk. no wonder you are having severe pain.

I hate to be "that guy" but...

"...In addition, resistance training has also been suggested to reduce the risk for musculoskeletal injuries, or perhaps reduce the severity of such injury. Although studies reporting the direct effect of resistance training on injury rate reduction are limited, the physiological adaptations seen consequent to resistance training on bone, connective tissue and muscle does imply enhanced protection against injury for individuals who participate in such a training program." -American College of Sports Medicine

SFlonghorngirl - Be careful with your workouts!! Crossfit is the "new thing" but really, it was invented in the 50's and called circuit training.... Many Crossfit instructors are NOT recognized by the NSCA or ACSM.

Here's a great breakdown by a women's health consultant - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/erin-simmons/why-i-dont-do-crossfit_b_5411771.html
