Let's recap Opening Day in College Baseball

Let's take a look at some of the top teams in the country and how they fared yesterday.

UR-Kentucky 8/11/2

UR-Gonzaga 3/8/2

UR-Niagara 2/2/0

The numbers 2, 4 & 9 ranked teams all lost to UR opponents. They also generated a combined 5 runs on 15 hits.

Of all the above teams, only the numbers 1, 5, 15 and UR Kentucky had more hits than Texas did.

My point is, don't mail it in on this Longhorn team yet. This is not the same team as last year. They are hitting the ball. The Es are what killed Texas last night. Cal took a 1-0 lead into the 5th. Cal scored 5 in B5. All 6 of those runs were unearned.

Texas gave up 1 earned run on the night. It just wasn't Parker French's night. Augie said he was going to try and get 6 out of each of his starters this weekend, and he gave French 5 complete. French gave up all 6 runs on 4 hits and 4 errors. Again, not a single one of those was earned.

So what I'm looking for today is a better defensive effort, more of the same from Payton at the plate, and continued hard hit balls from the UT hitters. I'll report some today and let y'all know what they look like. I'm on a flight to the Bay Area right now. Where's that Mimosa?

Don't give up hope boys, we are not the only ranked team that struggled yesterday.

Not even close. The reality is this is just the same stuff we've seen the last 3 years. Bunting in the 1st inning with your #3 hitter. That's just f'ing stupid. An offense in baseball is giving 27 outs. Why make it easier on a defense to give up one of those 27 while decreasing your run expectancy at the same time? Especially when you have two freshmen playing their 1st game batting 4th and 5th. The game has passed Augie by, and it's sad to see him be better at eating food than coaching baseball.

Just a thought, but you do realize that Augie has won several titles with that same small-ball philosophy, right? And not that long ago. His game plan may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there's no arguing that it has worked for him. I'm not a big fan of it, but I'm smart enough to recognize that the guy has the skins on the wall to back up his way.

Jeff it's to early for us to give up on Texas. Texas has the talent and I am looking forward to Texas giving a better effort as the season goes on.for that but Texas sure didn't help themselves.

Reruns again....coach Augie can not change, so Patterson will have to do the changing

And yet..He used that philosophy in 2009 and again in 2011..He understands the pressures of getting this team back where it belongs..Last night was the 1st game of the '14 season..Baseball is a marathon not a sprint..

Yes, the best player on his 2009 team had to get proper instruction on how to hit and now he's one of the best young 1b in the majors.

So were you ready to fire Rick after struggling with Mercer? How did that turn out?

No because I knew Mercer was a good club that would probably make the tournament. California was a worse club than Texas last year, and lost their best player to the MLB draft. You are comparing apples and oranges.

Mercer a good club? When did they last play in the tourney? The last two National Champions have come from the Pac 12.

They won their conference last year and upset some good teams on the road and returned almost their entire team, they got upset in their conference tournament by Florida Gulf Coast who went on one of the best runs ever by a 15 seed in the tournament.

Cal was 23-31, hit .268 as a team and had a 4.61 team era. As I stated, Cal's best player went pro.
