I'm sure Red and Joe really give a crap about what a few people on an ancillary message board think of them. Senile or not, Red was out of line. Period.

Well HornEsch, I am guessing those BMDs would not mind what some person on a message board has to say. They have the influence to take their thoughts to the media, whereas small donors such as myself do not. I can only express myself here...

I don't give 2 shits about what Red McCombs does or doesn't think. His comments today and recently have been pathetic and demeaning. Just another rich ass big mouth. Apparently someone from his camp is a member here or reads the site for some reason. That doesn't mean people should be muzzled about his sorry ass comments.

The entire thread really was that bad. Most BMDs could care less what we post on a forum. If there was ever a thread that needed to be deleted that was it.
A few weeks ago, I made the point that Mack is the only one who has the ability to write his legacy. The same is true for Red. The BMDs may not give a crap what the alumni think. They may feel they have bought and paid for the program and they can soil it as they choose. In the end, we get to decide what the legacy of the BMDs will be. Its our right as rank and file alumni. Red was out of line. That might not mean anything to Red. Obviously, it means a lot to us.

I love old red, and truly appreciate all he has done for UT, but he wouldn't be the first guy to let his ego cancel out his good accomplishments

He doubted his qualifications as a head coach saying he only has position coach skills in public. Not in a private message board. In public. I'm fine with him not liking the hire. But Strong has been a head coach already, a successful one at that. He has a BCS bowl to his name. To question his abilities as a coach is completely uncalled for. You think what you like but you don't embarrass a man like that in public that has done nothing to you whatsoever. And now you guys are getting on us for reacting to this in private? Red must be paying the bills around here or something.

This is your board and I have to follow the rules. But I won't apologize for what I said about McCombs. That was a scumbag move he made today.

As someone who is a minority, yes Red's comments should be labeled as "veiled racism".
Yeah you can make a case for that. For him to say Strong is barely deserving of a coordinator job is ridiculous given he was a 2x champion DC and a HC for 4 years including a BCS win.

I realize Red has donated a lot of money and done a lot of good for Texas

I know this community wants to be different, but what Red said today has no defense. What he said deserves the full outrage of the UT nation

It was disgusting, and embarrassing. I agree with a few of the others who felt some sort of possible race issue in the comments particularly in regard to him not even being deserving of a head coach title, and more suited to a lower position like a position coach. The comments were demeaning and insulting if nothing else.

I don't care what Red has done in the past as respect is earned, and today he lost my respect by what he said

Red embarrassed himself and the University today, and its not being out of line IMO to point that out

I particularly think its sad he came out to make these comments on the day Strong was introduced as coach

Now is the time to let things heal and rally around our new coach. Red went nuclear and trashed someone that is just starting his era at Texas. Red's comments carry a lot of attention in the media, and as a major UT booster he should be above this. Its truly a joke he put himself in this story

Red should have taken a cue from Mack Brown who was very classy in welcoming Coach Strong today

Totally agree and with Mano above. Trust me I made my point to that as well. My hope, and I say this after posting my dislike of Red's comments very nice either, is that we can be the better man/woman. I agree we have our format and a right. However just like Red, there are better ways to voice disapproval and that is all I ask.

Red took the bad way.

Dizz, there is a reason Red was pissed and Mack was classy. That said, Red's comments were inappropriate and not well thought out. There is no defending what he said. To me, he should have distinguished between Strong....who did nothing wrong....and his anger directed towards Powers and Patterson who in the minds of some betrayed the guys who either put them in their jobs or have protected them in their jobs. These are not the kind of people you betray without repercussions. Red's ESPN interview was reactionary and not particularly well thought out. However, he has a legitimate beef. He just should have handled it differently.

Powers doesn't care that he screwed over the guys who protected him during the Perry attacks because he's a short timer regardless. Patterson however pretty much insured himself of a very short tenure at Texas if Strong doesn't turn out to be a home run hire.

As respectfully as I can muster, Mr. McCombs owes Mr. Strong and the University of Texas a very public apology

This. And only this, however I will say he owes COACH Strong and UT an apology.

The people who protected Powers were the alumni, not the BMDs. At the end of the day, Perry and his cronies weren't worried about the money, they were worried about popular opinion and the voters. Perry figured out having a half million educated UT alumni (and THEIR donations) aligned against him was a losing proposition. Red has marginalized himself and the value of his support irreparably today. We will see in short order who does the right thing and repudiates Red McCombs' comments.

Ok. I sort of know red from a real estate deal in co and some other business related stuff. What you see is what you get. He has a big head and a mouth to go with it. Of course, he's done some good things too. If he wants to make an ass of himself so be it. He can dish it out and he's not too concerned with any backlash on a board.

Im going to have to disagree with you because frankly Im just sick about hearing things about/from BMD's in general. Doing good things or not people like Jamail and Red just need to go away IMO...at least from being media figures ever again.

Reds comments on how the hire should have been Gruden, and how he's been talking to Gruden about coaching here make me feel like Patterson was the perfect hire. Red is best served writing checks...not hiring the next coach and playing athletic director. Jon Gruden was never coming here, and he wont be coaching anywhere. Not in the NFL or in college. A total waste of time, and would have been pointless for Patterson to chase that crap when he had more important things to do

I absolutely love Patterson isn't afraid to stand up to clown shows and Red/Jamail went clown show. These are not the first public comments Red has made in the last month or two

McCombs will go down in history on the UT campus along side Simkins if he doesn't do the right thing within the next day or so. Red may not care, but the alumni get to write his legacy. And at the moment, we don't care much more about him than he does about us. Does Red really think the alumni won't hold him and his legacy accountable for his misguided comments? After all, the reason he wanted his name on campus was to establish a legacy. After today, Red is going to get a legacy, just not one he thought he was going to get.

I agree with you Dizz. Why on earth is a BMD out conducting his own coaching search and interviewing? This reeks of the Auburn fiasco a while back when you had knuckleheads like this thinking they can hire a coach on their own and sending planes to pick folks up with no input from the AD. I hope Patterson teaches these guys a lesson on how things are done. Red can be petulant that he's not getting his way, but this stuff is way over the line
