Tom Herman’s offense relies heavily on athletic tight ends that can block and make plays in the passing game. The Longhorns showed a deficit at that position both on campus and in the recruiting class when Herman was hired, but he wasted no time targeting several prospects. The deficit was made smaller when Lake Travis tight end Cade Brewer committed to Texas today. Brewer was previously committed to SMU, and he held offers from Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma, and Kansas State among others.
Despite holding offers from several big name programs, Brewer looked like he was going to remain firm to SMU. Things changed when Texas offered, and a big part of that was due to the proximity. Most Austin area kids grow up Longhorn fans, and Brewer mentioned to other outlets a desire for a Texas offer all along. Brewer shows a unique skillset not currently present on the Texas roster, and he might be able to contribute immediately once he reaches campus. Brewer also comes from a tremendous high school program with a long history of winning.
Film Analysis:
Brewer has good size at 6’3, 225 lbs, with the frame to add more weight on. Brewer features at wide receiver, flex/slot, and h-back for his high school team. He’s a strong route runner with good quickness and straight-line speed for his size. Brewer is a natural pass catcher with soft, yet strong hands. He shows strong body control, and good leaping ability. He also shows the ability to use his frame and shield defenders off from the ball. He can be deployed in a variety of ways, including into the flats, down the seam, and in the screen game. Brewer can also be split out from the red zone to create mismatches against smaller defenders. Brewer shows a good ability to run after the catch, and he’s fairly difficult to bring down in the open field. Brewer is an above average blocker with plenty of room to get better. He’s best at chipping players from the h-back position, or utilizing slam and release techniques to leak into the pattern for pass plays. Brewer plays with a strong motor, and he shows an ability to make plays wherever he is on the field.
Final Verdict:
Brewer is an important commitment due to his possible role in the Tom Herman offense. He will probably need a bit of physical development in order to meet the physical demands of FBS football, but he could play right away if called upon. Brewer has the ability to become a key cog in the Texas machine, and his athletic profile gives him the ceiling of a multiple time all-conference level player with a shot to get drafted in the mid rounds of the NFL draft.
