We lost Emmanuel Acho, Keenan Robinson, Blake Gideon, Fozzy Whittaker and David Snow. There are holes to fill, but the Longhorns have a great recruiting class and here are some key players returning to 40 acres.
Joe Burgeron/Malcolm Brown: I know what your thinking but he is a freshman and we will see if his game transfers to Austin. Meanwhile with a healthy Brown and Burgeron I see a two headed monster with different running styles. In this case different is a good thing. Brown seems to pick his holes and Burgeron just makes a hole, but that style is an injury waiting to happer. Either one they are two key components
Jaxon Shipley: Without the younger Shipley the Longhorns struggled in the passing game. Like Jordan before him, Jaxon is a play maker and his 40 passes for 593 yards should only increase next season. With the recruitment of some 4 star WR'ers, Jaxon is even more important to whoever the QB is.
Jordan Hicks: In the base 4-3 defense Hicks saw time at the Sam LB position. In the pass heavy Big 12 the team was forced to more nickle defense and Hicks saw his time limited. Even in limited time he had 57 tackles, 2 for losses and 1 turnover. Next season he will be even more important.
Quandre Diggs: A case can be made that Diggs performance was the most surprising on the team. The freshman CB. He was thrust into the starting CB position and responded with all Big 12 Honorable Mention. This may well be the next big CB at a university that breeds NFL cornerbacks.
Carrington Byndom: Before the season the Longhorns had many questions at cornerback. Diggs and Byndom surely answered those questions and under Duane Akina, Texas' Defensive Backs Coach sophmore Byndom looked like a finished product. He had 2 ints, one returned for a td and defended 15 passes. Look for greatness next season.
Alex Okafor: Many Diaz switcher Alex back to his more natural position at DE and he responded with 14 tackles for a loss, 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Going into his senior season he has a chance to raise his level to his older brother and then the sky's the limit.
Jackson Jeffcoat: Jackson really started to dominate in the second half of the season and finished with 18 tackles for a loss and 6 sacks. By the end of the season Jackson was nearly unstoppable and showed why he was a 5 star recruit. His next stop will be the NFL but before that he will make the Big 12 pay next year.
Josh Cochran: Finally some quality in the offensive line. The true freshman unseated Tray Allan during the season and was a bright spot in the offensive line. With an off season of conditioning I see greatness in his future and a some time to pass for whoever plays QB.
Kenny Vaccaro: The win of the season was minutes after the Holiday Bowl win, Kenny committed for his senior season. He returns as one of the most physical DB in college football. He had two ints, a sack, 7 pass break ups and finished 4th with 77 tackles.
