Just an Update

Last night Chip, Jason and myself had some different opinions on the Saban situation. I worded some stuff wrong and I apologized for it. I have no problem with Jason, hell I helped Orangebloods for a long time with basketball stuff. Jason and Dustina re really good people. Those 2 I have dealt with a lot in the past.
My point last night was their information that chip was speaking as gospel was 100% wrong. I have never ever said, Saban was a lock to Texas. But I got some info Xmas Eve night from a guy that would know. I feel like Chip info could be in fact a smokescreen to leave the pressure off Saban or he could really believe that info. I don't know.

The email basically said that around 5 pm Xmas Eve, Saban made a call to a couple people with power. We did not initiate that call. Saban himself did. I'm 100 percent sure on that. So where do we sit? I have zero knowledge on if it's done or if it won't happen. In that call Saban wanted promises on certain situations. Those were given to him.

I want Jimbo. I think he would kill it at Texas. But the guys that matter still want Nick. Period.
Chip got a national beat down over Mack. If Saban or his agent called him directly, I doubt he would print it? The guy has to be gun shy after all the shit that hit his fan.

A couple of things at play in this situation.
-Powers is on record saying very clearly and directly publicly this was Patterson's hire and he would not be involved in directing the process. That he wasn't an Athletics guy etc. He very publicly gave Patterson all the power.

-Powers is thought by many to be a short timer for how much longer he will be at Texas. Some have said he may retire in 6 months. If that is the case he isnt even going to be around much as president with the new coach as it is. Why would he care that much now at this point to pick a coach and veto Patterson and or the committee?

-Multiple insiders have said Powers has lost a ton of support internally from BMD and the like over what went down with the Mack situation, and Saban the first time. He's likely been neutered to some degree in terms of power to do much of anything to push off the BMD/Regents, selection comittee and Steve Patterson to somehow hire someone else they dont want
1. I think I explained why Patterson might not select Saban. Besides, SABAN pretty much said the same when he signed the extension.

2. I've heard the same as you, concerning Powell's tenure here, and it has just been speculation. NO ONE, except Powell, knows how long he will be here. For sure Patterson doesn't. And it really doesn't matter what Powell cares about, it only matters what Patterson believes he cares about. If your boss tells you he doesn't like Saban, and you are the new kid on the block, are you going to fly your pick in his face, regardless if he has given you full authority on your pick? Especially, as a rookie and you don't really know the political lay of the land? One thing I would know, for sure, is that the BOR just gave my boss a vote of confidence that his job was secure. I would certainly take note of that.

Realize, of course, these are just my opinions and I could be 100% wrong. It just makes sense to me.

To be clear, I hope I am wrong and Saban is cleared to be hired.

spare me the child, please comments. i expressed an opinion different than yours and that means our opinions differ, that's it. get over yourself. you don't have to have one or the other. fisher has proven that.

I don't know what there is in my post to "get over." I disagreed with what you stated and gave my reasons why. What in my reply garners a response such as yours?

Is it not impossible you both are right? Saban "calls" xmas eve. Then Mack goes nuts and demands more $$. Day after xmas Saban says sorry.. but lets foget that phone call never happened?

could Saban have also called this friend and said "Happy Holidays and How ya been?"? someone couldve said I got a call from Saban on xmas eve and the other person put a spin on it. We all know how rumors work. Not saying this is the case but this whole story(Saban to Tx) is so confusing and im not really sure who has good info and who doesnt. I think Orangeflow has the right idea, turn the computer off until Jan 10 or so.

Do we know that the Sabans have purchased an Austin area home? I know there were reports that an area home was purchased by a LLC, but were the Sabans proven to be connected to the LLC?

Boom. Thanks, Shaunsters.

I said this almost verbatim over at IT.
Does the brand new employee (Patterson), knowing that Powell is adamantly against Saban, go against his boss's wishes and take him anyway? Even though Patterson has supposedly been given Carte Blanche in selecting the next HC, does he exercise that option?

I think we all know the answer, right?
The decision is ultimately Patterson's to make. It'd be nice to keep Powers happy, but BOTH need to make the BMDs happy. If the big-timers want Saban it will happen.

I don't believe Powers will interfere much in athletic affairs. Dodds had almost carte blanche while he was AD.

Shaunters...thanks for sharing your info, even though you have to endure a bunch of BS when you do. I enjoyed your exchange on OB yesterday. I don't view anyone as being right or wrong...it's often just a matter of who we know as to what we know. And I really appreciate hearing from different people who are being told different things. It helps to get a fuller picture of what is happening behind the curtain. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks.

Either way, seems like Patterson will have to go against the wishes of three BMD's, or Powers. And that's why he gets paid the big bucks.

Patterson isn't a fool. Bill Powers isn't going to be around forever, and he can't fire a freshly hired AD for nothing more than hiring a coach.

The BMDs linger forever and control the puppet strings. Be bold Patterson. Get your guy if he's there for the taking.

Patterson was more or less hired by the 3 BMDs and a few others. Not Powers. IMO if he's going to go against someone, it's going to be Powers. There are a couple of reasons. First, the BMDs are BMDs for a reason. They don't get told no. And they can make your life much tougher than Powers can. Second, the BMDs are some of the members of the BOR who are currently backing Powers in his fight with Perry. They can change their vote and he's out. And even though Powers might be close to retiring, at the end of the day, I'd be willing to bet that Powers wants to retire on his own and not be forced into it. If Patterson and the BMDs want and can get Saban, they will get him and Powers will be ok.

The biggest question is whether or not Saban is actually an option. I think he is. It's going to be a long week and half waiting for all of this to work itself out. I think if Saban is going to be the guy, he will be hired and announced before the title game. If the title game comes and goes I think Saban is a no go and we end up with someone else.

Thanks for your info Shaunsters......always good to get information from you. Hook'em

Need a new update plz. Its a little too quiet on the insider front. Please don't tell me we are going from Saban to Franklin and now to Briles like CB seems to think :P

Two sources at the "highest" levels confirm the next coach will be Mack Brown, the one from 1997. DNA preserved from that time will be used to bring forth the younger Brown at the JJ Pickle Research Lab.

So yeah....you get a more energized Mack and Powers gets to keep his buddy. Sort of.

What happens to the old Mack Brown?

The big question: will Patterson acquiesce to Powers and select someone other than Saban?
He's not reporting to Powers. Powers has given a blanket sign off on whoever Patterson gets. Patterson reports to BMDs, along with the committee that was pretty much selected by the BMDs.

I actually have some info. Didnt want to post it because everyone has already heard it, but what the hell it's slow. I was house shopping today with my real estate agent. I have known the guy for a while and I already knew he doesn't follow sports from past conversations, but I ask him about the Texas HC search anyways. I was actually on Hornsports on my phone, so it was on my mind... I started talking Saban and then he smiled and said he knew that Terry Saban was in town recently and he knew that she had purchased at least one home and he was under the impression that another home purchase was going down. I dismissed this pretty quickly since everyone and their mother has heard something similar to this but I never remember hearing anything about a second home purchase. I asked him how in the hell he would know this considering he knows nothing about football and doesnt care to know. That's when he preceded to tell me his source and I BELIEVED. Boring I know, but it's all I got :)

What happens to the old Mack Brown?
He's sent back down to the minors and repackaged as "Willie Mack", after which he takes Lou Holtz out and assumes his job.

Kirk, Lee, and Willie will be a great package going forward, with the SEC fan base ESPN caters to excited "Willie" seems to be like them.
