I realize that we still do not have a completed staff yet, but so far all I can say and excuse me for saying:

all-star staff my a$$.

If he said in his interview he would assemble an all-star staff here, he either does not know what that looks like or he his a ____.

Color me unimpressed to far, but I will continue to hope and pray for the best.

An all star staff to Charlie strong may mean something entirely different than what we thought. Charlie strong is not a liar. He's man of great integrity. He did say he wanted to spread the ball around and go up tempo. Let's see how we perform before we jump off the ledge. I can't wait for the spring game.

Other than that, no official announcements have been made. I wouldn't mind if Searles stayed as OL coach. I would love to have Porter back as RB coach and Wyatt at WR.

As for projections at OC I'm not convinced that Watson will be the guy, but if he is I will be somewhat disappointed because I feel we could make a bigger splash...but I felt that way when Strong was hired too, and I've changed my mind. Hopefully that will be the case, if it is him.

I have no issues at all with the people from UL coming so far. Esp at DC and S&C. how could people not like those?

anyone that expected he would bring no one with him and go out and hire a collection of people he had never worked with or had no ties too just based on how high up the list some people had them ranked were being unrealistic

Any coach coming here would have brought guys with them or others in they had worked with in the past. Coaches like to have comfort and trust with their staff

Splash is not what we need. Great coaching is what we need, with great recruiting.

Sure, the very short term possible recruits will see the headlines of who's hired. Some names fancier than others. It's up to the new guy to pick up the phone and recruit, regardless of the splash that some fans really seem to need.

How well they perform here is the important thing by far. Plus, judging a coach only by looking up some offensive or defensive stats from years ago from team X he coached at is very short sighted.

Plus, we tend to set ourselves up for failure, i.e. this coach and that coach are who we need. When that expectation is not met, then the sky is falling. We didn't get HC choice #1, #2 or #3. OK, the sky is falling...oh, wait...I think I like SC now that I have done some research. Maybe I'm not as invested as many others, but I'm going to wait to worry about things. What I read says worrying doesn't add anything to my days.

Agree with all the above, I guess my fear is really the Bedford gets the HC job at Lville and Watson is named OC here. Just not what I envisioned our new staff would look like.

Because Strong is basically a DC, I can't have too much problem hiring Bedford. I would have hoped for a bigger name because Bedford hasn't been a coordinator for long. But whatever, like I said Strong is the DC basically. I don't know enough about the S & C coach to say one way or the other. He certainly doesn't have the cache of Moffitt or some of his deciples. His videos that have been passed around haven't impressed me in the least. But whatever, I will put some faith in Strong here.

But if he brings Watson too? He is telling us that the dream staff was at Louisville. I am not buying that AT ALL!!! The good news is that we should be able to save money by getting them on the cheap. The bad news is obvious.

I would think it's easier than it seems to learn from history. Our previous head coach brought in four and five star recruits by the bushel barrel full for years, yet with only a few exceptions, those recruits didn't get much better in their four years at UT. Conversely, some of the lesser-touted recruits (Colt McCoy as an example) turned out to be the real stars. A lot of this can be placed on coaching. Mack hired assistants based on how good they were at recruiting. I'm sure teaching ability was important to him, but it didn't seem to be THAT important to him. There's a common thread among the three coaches that have given UT the most trouble over the last five or so years, Bob Stoops, Art Briles, and Mike Gundy. Their staffs coach up the players they recruit. In the cases of Briles and Gundy, they don't usually get that many four and five star players, but they do a great job of coaching up their two and three star players.

I've seen nothing to indicate that Coach Strong came to town on a load of cabbages. Matter of fact, if you check his body of work at Louisville, he didn't get that many four and five star players either, yet his teams improved every year, and lost very little his last two years. Talk about his schedule all you want, but you've gotta play who's on your schedule. His staff was obviously good at teaching, and motivating his players. There's no reason to think he's gonna change his approach at UT. He obviously knows how to put a staff together that can both identify and recruit talented players, and coach 'em up once they're on campus. That's a big, and welcome change from what we've had for a decade and a half, so pardon me if I'm not quick to jump to any conclusions this early in the game.

Do you all remember when Mack was berated because he was loyal to certain coaches to a fault. It has been well documented that CS can and should be a great hire. I understand that a coach is going to bring some of his coaches that he is comfortable with and trust to his new hire. But with that being said...Many times the success or failure for a coach (Manny Diaz or further back in time Greg Davis) can be tied to the coaches you surround yourself with. Watson and Chambers do not excite me.

I have to agree. If we all think he is a good hire, how is it in 2 days, based on a few hires, we have gone 180 and have decided it is a terrible hire and he cant coach.

Give the guy a chance to do his job, he has done it well in the past. Trying to micromanage the situation is going to drive you nuts.

He is, in theory, an expert, so I defer to his judgment and we will see how he does with the program

Agree with much of the post. However, when we were in the middle of the 9-yr run, we were, what #1 or #2, putting players in the NFL. Most were 4 or 5 star recruits. We need good recruits/football players, and to coach them up.

I don't recall hearing Steve Patterson or Charlie Strong saying he had a blank check to put together an all-star staff.

Didn't the all-star staff stuff come from "insider" reports from insiders who had told us we were getting a different head coach?

I think we should wait until actual staff announcements are made before freaking out.
