Jordan Spieth charges to within shot of lead at PlayersPONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Playing PGA Tour events for the first time at new venues, lacking the course knowledge that so many of his fellow competitors have, should be putting Jordan Spieth at a disadvantage.

Yeah, some disadvantage. At the Deutsche Bank Championship last year, getting his first look at TPC Boston, Spieth tied for fourth. At the Masters last month, he led by two in the final round before tying for second. Then there’s the eight other top-10s he had in 2013, and the runner-up in Hawaii at the start of 2014.

The 20-year-old Texan is at it again, positioning himself near the lead while making his debut in yet another tournament. This time it’s a big one, the Players Championship, which features the largest purse in professional golf, paying $1.8 million to the winner from a $10 million pot.

Against one of the best fields in golf, Spieth is making it look easy. He’s the only player without a bogey on his card through two rounds, handling the wind and the difficulty of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass with a steady dose of fairways hit, greens made, and putts sunk.

Spieth isn’t even winning, but his Friday 66 was the low round of the day that brought him to 11 under par and within one shot of Martin Kaymer’s lead. Kaymer followed his record-tying 63 on Thursday with a 69 Friday morning. Spieth and Kaymer have distanced themselves somewhat, with Russell Henley (71) in third at 8 under, and a five-player posse another two shots back at 6 under.

PGA Tour: Jordan Spieth still bogey-free, tied for lead at TPC Sawgrass

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Jordan Spieth repeatedly pumped his fist when his 12-foot par putt dropped into cup on the final hole, a clutch moment worthy of celebration for two reasons. It gave him a third straight bogey-free round at The Players Championship and a share of the lead Saturday with Martin Kaymer.

Spieth was even more impressive when he got into trouble off the tee late in a demanding round. The 20-year-old Texan missed his last four fairways and saved par each time, giving him a 1-under 71 in increasingly tougher conditions at the TPC Sawgrass.

Not since Greg Norman won The Players in 1994 has anyone played the opening three rounds without a bogey.

He will win one of these tourneys soon.  Just didn't have a good day today.

Spieth has one hell of a future on the tour.

Kid's just got to learn how to win! Great talent; probably too emotional when he screws up! He needs to have that short memory they all talk about! He's not Tiger or Jack...maybe a young Hal Sutton; if he's lucky, Johnny Miller! Hal Sutton blasted onto the tour and faded after he won and couldn't handle the fame; Miller blasted onto the scene and stayed relevant and in the "best ever" conversation for 10 years. If he's really lucky, he's like Tom Watson, but that is a mighty test! I watched Jack in his prime and the guys that ran at him for years and years and then Tiger and how he made them all wilt and Tiger is the best golfer I've ever seen.

Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 junior golfer in the country........ and is committed to UT

The next Jordan Spieth?
Scheffler knows the comparisons to young PGA Tour phenom Jordan Spieth are natural. Both put up impressive junior golf résumés playing out of clubs in Dallas. Like Spieth, Scheffler won three straight state titles, doing so at Class 4A Highland Park. And like Spieth, Scheffler is a U.S. Junior Amateur champion, winning last year (in his final year of eligibility) at Martis Camp Club in California. The Dallas resident is the No. 1 junior golfer in the country.

The Nelson was Spieth's first PGA Tour event in 2010. It will also be Scheffler's first foray inside the ropes against some of the best professional golfers in the world.

Just as Spieth did prior to turning professional, Scheffler is headed to the University of Texas to play college golf.

"I liked the place and I want to go to business school," said Scheffler, who visited a handful of colleges, including Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and Stanford.
