John Chavis

i think its apples and oranges.

leaving the money differential aside, ask yourself why would Chavis go from a town like Baton Rouge to live in a shithole like

College Station. there's more to this lateral move than meets the eye IMO.

Sumlin is widely believed to be headed out after the next year or two, most likely to the pro ranks. why would a guy like Chavis go to a school where he's going to be looking at a new boss in a year or two?

answer: he wouldn't

but he would go if he was privately promised he'd move into the head coach slot.

I think Chavis is the de facto HCIW at A&M. He might well end up being good. He also might well end up being John Blake.
Sumlin is guaranteed $5 mil/yr through 2019. He isn't leaving that for the NFL unless he is making more money and no NFL team will pay $5mil+ for an assistant coach. After his enabling of Manziel, no NFL team will give Sumlin a HC spot, either.

I agree. I think if sumlin was going to leave he needed to last year. His rep is only declining at this point

Lol. Just wait to see how aggy spins the Chavis hiring. We are about to see Nick Voinis get absolutely schooled on the use of media to support the development of a college football program and the recruitment of student athletes.

I have no idea how aggy has pulled all this off, but it really appears they have. F'ing amazing.
Unfortunately I agree with you on this. That being said schooling Nick Voinis on the use of media is child's play. Anyone of a number of people on this board could put together a media team that would school the great Nick Voinis.

This will be very interesting to see how this play out.

Let me get this straight.

Chavis may be leaving LSU for aggie because they're gonna make him the highest paid assistant in CFB at $1.8mm per year ($500k raise). I'm not saying he isn't a very good DC, but his schemes aren't going to overcome a lack of discipline. I guess we'll see, but it looks to me like aggie will over pay because they're desperate.

Feather in their cap to steal a "rival's" coach. Definitely an aggie chest-thumping moment.

Surprised the hell out of me. I kinda like the hire, but it doesn't fix the thug life attitude.

Disagree. From reading the LSU boards the LSU AD is an ass and was jerking around Chavis on his contract. Someone posted that LSU wanted it in his contract that if Miles left, Chavis would only get paid for six more months. I believe this is a take this job and shove it move plus he will be receiving more money. Chavis is 58 and  I'm not sure if he wants to be a HC.

Hate to see Chavis at A&M, he's one of the best. He's helped Fulmer and Miles win a NC

I don't think Chavis would have the same success as he had at Tn. or LSU. I have lived in this shithole for 25 years and cross paths with a lot of the "old army" alums who are not to pleased with the culture that Stumblin has brought to the school. A&M is promoting SEC and not A&M, because they are losers and nothing to brag about except SEC. There is not much to do around here for the players except drink and drugs and fight. The "Thug U" that Stumblin is creating will be his downfall. This area is growing in leaps and bounds and the crime rates have really increased and there seems to be a lot of problems around the North Gate Area where most of the students party and where Johnny Clipboard and Trill Hill got plastered. This is where good Coaches come to be bad coaches. We need to stop worrying about the aggies. Remember we are the U of Texas!

Lets hope Malik doesn't change his mind. That would be a bigger kick in the nuts than the Texas Bowl.

Thought this was funny.  Posted on an LSU site in a thread titled "Chavis arrives at A&M"

Aggy overpaid. Chavis has never had to coach a defense under so much pressure. Are his best days behind him or in front of him?

Malik's pop isn't playing anymore. The decision is Malik's. Until Malik enrolls at Texas, color me concerned. It seems the only reason he committed to us and not Aggy was that they didn't have a DC. NOW they have one and he is supposed to be GOOD. Guys have flipped on NSD, so I wouldn't count my chickens on this one until he is sitting in class later this month.

Chavis is certainly an upgrade over Snyder, and IMO is a pretty good defensive coordinator. I think there are more fundamental problems with A&M though. A&M’s style of offense and Sumlin’s soft approach will never produce a good defense (just look at Sumlin’s defensive history as confirmation).

I will say this, I actually love the way LSU handled this whole Chavis ordeal. Chavis is certainly not worth $1.7 million and LSU didn’t cave like most schools would have. Chavis isn’t in the Muschamp/Smart tier who both make under $1.7 from what I recall. Sorry, a guy that refuses to recruit and forces his staff to do his recruiting isn’t worth $1.7 million. But hey, the aggys are desperate and overpaid for a guy nicknamed “3rd and Chavisâ€.  There are very serious long term implications when you overpay assistants and coaches, so I give LSU kudos for not caving.  If they land someone like Pendergrast I honestly don’t think it’s a downgrade at all. Like I said, I was impressed with how LSU handled the situation. Chavis isn’t worth $1.7 million.

This

I was shocked to hear that Chavis never goes off campus to recruit. Does he realize that he'll now be stuck in Collie Station? Based on his physique, looks to me like he'll miss his crawfish etouffee and beignets!

Chavis, did as almost any human would do, he left LSU for an additional $500K per year...period...easy answer....no mystery or other stuff in play here.

If somone offers me $500K more per year and my company won't match it, I am gone.
