There is all sorts of chatter that aggy has negotiated a deal to steal LSU DC John Chavis away. Supposedly, he is waiting until tomorrow to announce, but LSU is now in a bidding war to keep him. He is calling the LSU/ND game right now. This may be an interesting evening. The ags think it is a done deal.

It'd be interesting to know how much more aggie is willing to pay Chavis.

Why the hell would he leave LSU, all things being equal?

If there is a bidding war going on, who knows what the number will be. the last I heard was 4 years, $1.8 per, but who knows.

If all things were equal, one would guess he would stay, but for $500k/yr more (guaranteed), I could see why he would make the move. It will be interesting to see how it all ends up. Sumlin is desperate and the attractive options are limited. Aggy is known for doing stupid things with money (Sumlin's contract being evidence). It will be fun to watch if LSU outbids them.

That should be interesting. He has a sweet set up at LSU. He has limited physical capabilities so much of his stuff is delegated. I think even his time spent on campus is limited.

And watch out for the proverbial aggy "sure thing." That stuff blows up in their face more times than not.

Chavis would be a fool to go to A&M with the offense they run. No defense is going to look good with the hurry up, no huddle.

A lot of smoke out there, Aggy must have a printing press with all the money they are spending

His agent is no dummy. Why should Foster and Venables get raises and not Chavis?

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same situation as the above. It seems pretty clear the aggy BMD's are flashing wads of cash

all across the country and all the sports agents smell blood in the water.

So I might have just lost my mind or just not have had enough wine yet tonight but I say bring on Chavis.

Is he an upgrade for aggie? Yes. But we shouldn't be afraid of the competition damn it!!!! Sumlin will continue to sell his laissez faire attitude, players will continue to do what ever they want and in the end I believe that Strong's message will win out.

Bring it on.

The problem is that the aggy marketing group can spin the living crap out of this and use it to excite recruits while the team "supporting" Coach Strong is more concerned with not making things difficult for Kevin Sumlin than they are about making things easier for Charlie Strong. Once again, the ags will beat the crap out of Coach Strong's message with image. Chavis' move will unquestionably lead to some de-commits (at least from LSU) over to aggy. That gives Sumlin momentum to use with guys like Daylon Mack. Sumlin has proven he can run an offense. Chavis has proven he can run a defense. Texas is still trying to dig itself out of an image of a program that can't get a coin flip right and put up fewer yards against the worst team in the SEC west than did Nicholls State, Northern Illinois or UAB.

Thankfully, the dead period lasts until Jan 15, so there is a period where we can gauge the response of prospects to the new aggy DC (if it comes through). I'd be more comfortable with competition of we had a better record as of late in dealing with it. Coach Strong needs some momentum to build on. This season seems to have been two steps forward, two steps back, one step forward, two steps back.

If you don't think the aggy marketing team is going to use the hiring of John Chavis beat the hell out of any message Bellmont has in mind to support Charlie Strong, you are nuts. Charlie is our Winston Churchill in May of 1940. We aren't even at the end of the beginning. The best we can hope for is to pray for LSU to whip out their checkbook.

Damn, you think it's gonna be that bad? Even with chavis I doubt aggy ever does anything substantial. Texas will be fine and aggy will always be aggy. We will have another year or two of struggle but we are laying a good foundation of hard working disciplined kids. Aggy is a straw house. Just watch, it will be an entertaining fall from mediocrity for them

Lol. Just wait to see how aggy spins the Chavis hiring. We are about to see Nick Voinis get absolutely schooled on the use of media to support the development of a college football program and the recruitment of student athletes. Bellmont is playing checkers and aggy is playing chess. If Charlie Strong decides to bail on Texas within the next few years, it will be because he gets tired of Bellmont's inability to support his efforts.

A half a billion on a stadium, their DC will be making more than twice what UT's will make. They are throwing around money like crazy over there. They are pretty much the Jonses these days and Patterson is still trying to grow into his job. I know I sound very down these days, but Bellmont is continuously getting schooled by the aggys and nothing seems likely to change until Texas realizes Patterson is the wrong guy as AD. And that won't happen until the new university president is on the job for at least two years.

I have no idea how aggy has pulled all this off, but it really appears they have. F'ing amazing.

Yea our marketing is weak at best. We just rest on the fact that "We're Texas", which doesn't work anymore. We also don't have the conference backing that aggy does with the SEC. I don't think Strong will bail until he gets the ship righted. Belmont needs to stop being so passive and start pushing the Texas image where we all think it should be

Discipline will be a problem still, but busted assignments won't be on defense any longer. Chavis can coach and probably circles Mack back to Aggy.

That's what I was thinking. I would imagine chavis was a big part of recruiting him to LSU.

One thing you can't say about Aggy is that they settled on an average DC. Unfortunately, it seems like Texas did that with their OC hire.

i think its apples and oranges.

leaving the money differential aside, ask yourself why would Chavis go from a town like Baton Rouge to live in a shithole like

College Station.  there's more to this lateral move than meets the eye IMO.

Sumlin is widely believed to be headed out after the next year or two, most likely to the pro ranks.  why would a guy like Chavis go to a school where he's going to be looking at a new boss in a year or two?

answer:  he wouldn't

but he would go if he was privately promised he'd move into the head coach slot.

I think Chavis is the de facto HCIW at A&M.  He might well end up being good.  He also might well end up being John Blake.

Chavis won national championships at Tennessee and LSU - with damn good defenses crafted by him.  Regardless of whether it's A&M or another school, he is a fantastic hire.
