With the dismal offense its obvious a new OC and QB coach are top priority.  That may fix our QB woes but the staff should be making it a priority to get an experienced QB.  This conversation is Deja Vu at the end of 2014.

  1. Heard's concussion could turn into another Ash for all we know.
  2. Swoopes well is Swoopes.
  3. Locksley - unknown
  4. Merrick - unknown
We cant count on any true freshmen next year, it should be a top priority to get an experienced JUCO QB.

Evans Hudl film looks very impressive.

Does anyone have any updates or news on whether we are pursuing him?

Is he interested in Texas.  Looks like a great prospect to me as I am not sold on Heard as QB either.  I think Heard could be used as a slot receiver and that might be his ticket to playing in the NFL.

Not sure but Traylor is following him on Twitter FWIW.

@rodfor6_

I think this may all come down to who the new OC is and what type offense we intend to run..If we intend to be a Run based Spread then we may be ok with what we have…But these are just my opinions.

i think our offense will be very good at all positions other than qb next season. All of our qb's are system qb's. Thats great since most college qb's are but i dont have faith in strong to hire the right OC that will be able to run a good offensive system for our team.

I really hope i am wrong and will not have any problem admitting im wrong in the future if i am.

One of my friends, a Longhorn, has a son who has played on the OL of that Trinity Valley team for the past two seasons.

So I asked him about Evans. See his comments, below:

Does Evans have legitimate interest in Texas?

– "Yes. He is very interested. He can play, he is very good. Goes through his progressions when out of pocket and will run it too"

Is Evans a running QB or is he an effective passer as well?

– "Evans is a great passer especially when he gets flushed out of the pocket. He stays with his progression and then he fires to the open guy."

How is he under adversity?

– "He was under Postma last year, but lead us thru the playoffs. Kids a baller. He's a confident leader."

(Kyle Postma was the starting QB for Trinity Valley last year, but was injured at the end of the regular season. Evans guided TV through the NCJCAA playoffs after the injury to Postma. Evans was the starter this year.)

Christmas wishlist:

  1. Proven spread OC
  2. Great QB coach
  3. Jerod Evans
  4. Elliott or Oliver, we need an impact DL recruit.

I feel as if this guy can't be significantly better than Heard will be next year. The marginal difference isn't worth taking all the reps away from our own QB's that we will have already next year (in my opinion).

Heard has struggled many times this year.  He has played good a few times but have you seen Evan's arm?

Evans is bigger than Heard and probably more durable, plus stronger and more accurate arm.

Ther eis absolutely no reason whatsoever to not bring in a an experienced JUCO QB.  QB has been our weakest position the last 2 years.

If we had gotten Vernon Adams last year then we probably win 2-3 more games this year.

Those are all exactly what I would say. Plus, having a guy who has been through two years of JUCO ball is experience that we need at the position. He comes from a solid JUCO program. If anything, it's added quality depth, and competition at the position that has killed us the last two years. We were able to win a few more games under Mack because we had capable QB's. Ash or McCoy were able to make certain plays and we're better than what we have now. Yes we need a spread oriented, quality OC, but we also need a capable QB.

ESPN's profile of Evans:

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/137833/jerod-evans

From Mansfield, Tx, Mansfield High School, class of 2012.

6'3, 202 lbs, 4.63-40.

BTW, Kyle Postma (who Evans played behind last year) is the QB for Houston now.

ALSO, From the TValley site:

BEST OF THE BEST: Evans named SWJCFC MVP

The record-setting season of Trinity Valley Community College quarterback Jerod Evans has resulted in him being named Southwest Junior College Football Conference Most Valuable Player.

The 6-4 Mansfield sophomore leads a contingent of 19 Cardinals named to the All-SWJCFC Football Team, which was released this weekend. Evans was also named first-team quarterback and to the all-region team.

In leading the Cardinals to a 7-3 record and into the SWJCFC regional playoffs as  the top seed for a third straight year, Evans set a conference record for career touchdown passes (52) and set a school record for touchdown passes in a game (8) and tied the record for touchdown passes in a season (38).

For the season, Evans completed 179-of-287 passes for 3,164 yards.  He also rushed for 414 yards and four touchdowns on 77 carries.

The Trinity Valley official roster has Evans at 6'4, 225 lbs, so he's grown taller since HS and put on a little weight.

Jerod Evans stats for this past season but only through 8 games:

PASSING – 287 attempts, 179 completions, 62.4% comp rate, 3,164 yards passing, 395 yards per game average, 11.0 yards per completion average, 38 TDs, 3 INTs, long of 89 yards.

RUSHING – 77 rushes, 414 yards, 51.8 yards rushing per game, 5.4 yards per carry average, 4 TDs, long of 45, 2 fumbles - both lost.

Rivals has him unranked, but shows he has an offer from Cal and UAB.

Texas is in no position to pass on upgrades at the QB spot. anyone who has watched Texas since Ash sophomore year can clearly see QB has been game killer. also how many schools in big 12 have played at least 2 QB`s this year some are on #3. QB is the one position that you can never have enough talent. if Heard beats him out then great if not Heard will be good backup

Danny Hale For The Win!

I'm a Heard fan but I totally agree.

i certainly agree with this.  the OL is important too.  if the qb doesn't have time to go through his progressions then it doesn't matter who is at qb.  the job won't get done.

I talked to some people at the Mansfield game this weekend about him.  Will have a short update in Burnt Ends.

If its true we are going after Cumbie, both Traylor and Cumbie are among his followers on Twitter.

So Higdon has said that Strong told the staff that they are not going the JUCO route.  Nahlin over at IT has said thats not true - they have definitely reached out to Evans.

My guess is that they've reached out to Evans but won't be all-in until they hire an OC.
