Forget Saban for the time being. In fact, forget ANY new coach for right now. Mack is the lynch pin for the fortunes of our beloved football program.

Why wring your hands over Saban? We have a head coach and there is no vacancy and he isn't going to get fired. Clear your hopes of that happening.

Furthermore if the comments by Red mean anything at all, it means Mack can leave when he damn well pleases and Red will support him to those ends. It also means that Mack is in the catbirds seat and he knows it.

I hear he doesn't like Saban - Mack's ego and all. If so, what better way to squelch the possibility of Saban coming than delay his retirement? If he stays long enough, retires in March for instance, Saban will simply say screw it and re-up at Bama. Saban wants to come to Texas, but he has a pretty sweet deal at Bama as well. He doesn't have to jack around with UT and Mack's petulance.

Reds comment was PR supporting a friend so he can retire without any notion he was forced out. Behind the scenes Red is not pushing for Mack to stay...the opposite actually per several reports including as of today at IT

Yeah, I'm a member of IT as well and I read everything you did. Are you all in on the "behind the scenes" speculation of Red's comments being "smoke"? I can assure you that no one wants Saban here and Mack gone as bad as I do, but my thread, about Red, has nothing to do with speculation. It has to do what came out of the horses mouth, so to speak.

If you know for a FACT that Red was just blowing smoke and lying through his teeth about Mack, please reveal your facts. I tend to give a man the benefit of the doubt, when he makes emphatic comments like Red did. Call me naive, but I will leave the subterfuge and lies to the politicians.

Everything, other than Red, IS speculation.

No way in hell Mack waits until spring to retire. The man would get skewered for putting Texas in that position and tarnish his legacy. Dragging it out for a couple of weeks or a month would be more realistic. I still don't think he does that though. You can't disregard what's being said about red's feelings on IT because they didn't come from the horses mouth, and then go on to say Mack dislikes saban enough to tarnish his own legacy based on what you've read on the internet.

Also not trying to sound rude or attack you personally, just don't see the logic in your argument.

Today dealt Mack a final blow and I was skeptical before today.

At 8-4 he is finished. No conference title, BCS bid and out of get top 25 for the 3rd time in 4 years to end the season.

Texas is looking at a possible Oregon matchup in the Alamo Bowl to finish 8-5....that's not fixin' it.

It will be even harder next year.

We need to have a beer my friend.

I have to believe, and this is just my opinion, that as much as Mac might not want Saban to follow him as head coach he cares more about how he is perceived, his legacy and deep down he cares about UT if for no other reason the respect he has for DKR, JJ & Red. It is because of this that I think he will announce his retirement within the next week.

After today's results I do not believe Mack wields the power that some seem to feel he does. I believe the deal on the table for Mack right now is to either retire or be fired. There is a reason that Patterson took over on December 1. I believe Mack is gone one way or another.

And I believe if Saban is on the table and IF all parties are on board with Saban (and that means not just an influential group of donors but Patterson and Powers) then things will be expedited as necessary.

In other words I don't think Mack will be allowed to sabotage anything as far as Saban or any other coach goes.

As McPhaul said in another post I believe it is Saban's shot to call.
