Is Art Briles really another David McWilliams?

David McWilliams was a relatively successful high school coach who DKR hired. He eventually got his first HC job at Tech and led them to a 7-4 record when Tech was horrible. He then came to UT and was just ok and not living up to all his hype.

No comparison whatsoever. Briles won 4 state titles at Stephenville. David McWilliams was a defensive coach, while Briles' specialty is offense.

McWilliams didn't win a conference title nor have a Heisman winner. Briles took over two horrible programs, made UH a consistent bowl game contender with a Heisman contender in Keenum, then went to an even worse program in BU and coached/recruited a Heisman winner and recently won the Big 12. Apples to Oranges

No, Briles has been successful as a head coach at both Houston and Baylor. He has proven that he is a very good head coach.

I don't think you can get the two confused, I could be wrong.

This is a horrible comparison. Briles is an X's and O's witch that has accomplished much more in his career. McWilliams was hired in large part because he was an ex player.

Give Briles the budget to attract the best Coordinators and Assistants...then let's judge him.

Briles >>> McWilliams. Baylor was one of the worst programs. They have consistently been a top 3 team in Big 12 past few years. Briles O are some of the best in the nation. He is taking head to head recruits vs Texas, Ou, Lsu, Aggie. Briles has turned around 2 programs and made them viable and successful.

This is probably the worst comparison of all time. You might as well attempt to compare Charlie Strong to John Mackovic.

While I think Briles is a better coach than McWilliams . . . .my #1 question for any hire we make. .

Can they get us to Natty-Land . ..not the playoffs. ..Mack did that. ..we need to be better than that. .we need to lift waterford at least once while they are here . .7-10 year window.. .

Mack would have made the playoffs 3 times in 16 years . . .that is the "minimum bar". ..

I use a 7-10 year window as for some of our hires . ..that's about all they will give us (Saban Briles)

And 10-12 years seems to be typical "shelf life" of a CFB HC these days. .

Briles is an offensive innovator. Something he began as a HS coach and brought forward with him.

His ideas may be built upon the framework created by others, but he put his own spin on things.

His offense is uniquely his. And he is still tinkering with it.

I think it would be a mistake for him to go to the Redskins, but we will see. As always.

No comparison whatsoever.

McWilliams was head coach at Abilene High and was 21-17-2. The only reason he got a college job is because he was liked by DKR.

Briles was 166-46-4 as a high school coach, 135-29-2 at Stephenville and 4 state titles. He got a shot at college ball off of his own merits, not off of who he knew.

Not even on the same planet.

David McWilliams was THE prodigal son..He was a Co captain from the '63 National Championship team...it was a sentimental pick by DKR
