Interesting read on Ryan Perrilloux

This is a long piece on former 5-star QB Ryan Perrilloux. Clearly his biggest regret is not following through on his commitment to Texas. I'm a longtime sports writer in Northwest Arkansas who also covered Mitch Mustain at Springdale High. You could replace Perrilloux's name with Mustain in a lot of places in this piece. Mustain, too, also wanted to commit to Texas and in fact, did commit to Mack only to be persuaded to wait. His career also derailed almost the same way. How would their careers have turned out had they followed through on their original commitment to UT? Obviously we will never know.

Thanks for sharing NWA. I just want this one particular line to resonate with everyone for a second.

This is the kind of man Mack is. Despite his exit, I'll always consider him to be a man with an incredible heart and passion for not only the game but the young men that play it. He had no obligation to Perrilloux but he took that phone call and he gave his recommendation so that Perrilloux could have another chance. He didn't act bitter. He didn't speak negatively in some misguided attempt to get revenge on a recruit that some would claim spurned him. He helped the man the best he could. And I'll always believe that is the kind of man that Mack Brown is. The man that always did the best he could, even if sometimes it wasn't enough.

Wow, great story. With Perrilloux's added size you have to wonder if he would have been able to avoid the injuries that hampered Colt a little bit. After reading that, I sure hope that he get's a chance. It also makes you understand why VY has never gotten another shot. This blackball bs is just another reason for me to dislike the NFL.

Great read. I typically try not to ponder about what could have been, but I can't help but wonder if UT and Mack Brown would still be in this current situation had he not decommitted. Assuming of course he stayed out of trouble in Austin and is successful on the field. I wonder if Mack would have continued recruiting "dual-threat" quarterbacks instead of Gilbert or Ash? I know there's no point in dwelling, but hey.....a man can dream can't he?

It is what it is, I just hope he finds whatever else he's looking for in life.

Gilbert was a dual threat QB at LT. they ran the spread, and he was great. we tried to force him into being a drop back passer in a power running game and did him a disservice.

Gilbert also had horrible mechanics making it next to impossible for him to deliver an accurate ball on time, but yes, Texas should have stayed with the offense they were running with Vince, 1-2 reads, then run. That should have been the offense they ran with Gilbert. McCoy had a great football IQ and a quick release which allowed him to have more progressions than Gilbert or Young had.

Had Perilloux stayed with Texas, I have few doubts he would have been a star at Texas.

Nice article by the way....but Ryan Perriloux, John Brantley, Mustain...dont really care that the wanted to come to UT..the fact remains that didnt for whatever reason...Honestly I dont feel anything for them because they HAD their chances and decided the grass was greener elswhere

We got what we deserved in Colt and he had one great career, highly doubt any QB would have generated more wins that he did

I am sure there is a long distinguished list of guys that were supposed to come to the 40 Acres but did not...their loss not ours, they missed out on being a LONGHORN..its a very special club to belong to, its not for just anyone

Got kicked off of his high school baseball team because of attitude. The article barely got into how much of an entitled jerk he was. Also, he didn't just change his mind on NSD. He was recruiting other UT kids to go to LSU for several months.

He lives in Alabama and I hope he stays there. No integrity whatsoever.

Exactly. He was literally doing Les Miles' bidding and trying to flip our recruits.

I read an article a few years back where the interviewer was sitting with him and a Texas game was on. RP looked up at the screen and said something like, I almost went there, things could have been so different.

I don't hold it against him or anything but I'm not disappointed he didn't come here. Would he really have had us within one play of one MNC and an appearance in another?
