FINAL SCORE: Baylor 28 – Texas 7

First half: Baylor 7 – Texas 0
Second half: Baylor 21 – Texas 7

First half observations

Baylor goes for it on 4th down in their opening drive & got it only on a good 2nd effort. That conversion was followed by a questionable PI call on Shock Linwood and a delay of game penalty on Petty (trying to audible). A weak punt gives Texas the ball in Baylor territory. That’s as good of a start as the Horns can ask to have.

After a nice 3rd down conversion where Swoopes ran with more confidence than he has all season, Rose has a FG attempt blocked. His kick was way too low and Baylor’s speed shows up as it gets returned for a TD. The opening 6 minutes go as well as they possibly could for Texas , yet Baylor leads 7-0.

Swoopes missed single coverage outside when he overthrew Shipley on 4th down (on Texas’ second possession). For the first time this season, Swoopes looks uncomfortable. On the first three drives, his footwork, timing & accuracy are all off the mark.

Texas can’t capitalize on an explosive run from Jonathan Gray, early in the 2nd quarter. The OL doesn’t hold up in pass pro and Russ has to punt. Luckily that explosive run & the punt combine to pin the Baylor offense inside their own 20-yard line.

Peter Jinkens got totally turned around in zone coverage and the defense left the boundary wide open for an easy completion and run.

Baylor takes advantage of poor tackling by Texas (too many arm tackles) and goes straight down the field, but an unbelievable goal line stand by the Horns keeps it 7-0.

Some solid playcalling and execution helped the offense move the ball across midfield (following the goal line stand). Then solid off tackle runs & a timely personal foul penalty allow the Horns to tie it at 7 blow a huge opportunity to have a tie game at halftime. 99 yards, 14-plays, and more than 7 minutes in TOP and Texas walks to the locker room with nothing to show for it.

Second half observations

Strong calls a questionable timeout on Texas’ first possession in the 3rd quarter. The play was unfolding right in front of him, and obviously he saw something he didn’t like. The resulting 3rd down pass to McFarland is short of the marker and Texas goes 3 & out on their first possession of the half.

The defense forces a 3 & out on Baylor’s first possession too. A nifty return by Shipley helps negate a great punt. How long can the defense & special teams hold this level of effort? Even though the offense hasn’t been bad, the pressure is still on them.

The taunting call on Harris is precisely what this offense does not need. That’s hidden yardage that has to be re-gained.

Fake punt, rush, rush, throw over the top. Just like that it’s 14-0. So much of the Bears’ offense is rhythm and the special teams play seemed to find it for them.

In their possession near the end of the 3rd quarter, Texas got 20+ yards in 2 rushes from Jonathan Gray. Then they had 3 straight incompletions – strange playcalling, especially with the success Texas has had running to the right side.

Despite what the scoreboard says, this feels like a game where the Texas offense has been the most productive it has all season. Conversely, this is the first time Swoopes has looked like a first year starter.

Baylor abandoned the passing game and repeatedly ran it up the middle on their 3rd touchdown drive. That is the kind of offense that Texas wants. It also makes Texas’ choice to quit running it on the possession at the end of Q3 even more painful.

The garbage time touchdown made the scoreboard look better, but it did little to satiate the fan base.

Two takeaways

Looking at the game without emotion, it could have been Texas leading 10-7 at halftime if not for missed opportunities. The fake punt was another obvious turning point and missed opportunity. You can play “what if” all day with this game. That isn’t Pollyanna talking, it’s reality. This game was closer than it felt.

The entire team (coaches & players) all realize that the offense is holding this team back. There’s a lot of political correctness going on when the cameras are on, but everyone knows the defense is giving the team a chance to win. How long before players start to press & try to do too much in an effort to compensate for the offense?

Notable Stat’s

Baylor had 22 first downs…only 2 more than Texas

Baylor had 389 total yards…only 55 more than Texas

Bryce Petty was 7-22 for 111 yards with 2 TD’s

Baylor had 21 more points than Texas

This game was about converting opportunities and making production count. Baylor did it. Texas did not.

Choice Quotes

Charlie Strong: â€œWe don’t know how to win yet. We don’t know how to finish. Told you guys a while ago, we are going to eventually get over the hump, but we got to win these games.”

Charlie Strong: â€œI don’t know if we say it’s [the offense] a big mess. We drive the ball. We just, we have those opportunities and then there’s a breakdown.”

Charlie Strong: â€œIt’s not so much the talent of the quarterback. It’s the whole offense.”

Art Briles: â€œI think Coach Strong has done an outstanding job at UT. I thought their players played with a lot of passion, a lot of effort, very well schemed on both sides of the ball.”

Art Briles: â€œIt was just a grind it out win. This team, for them to do it, says a lot about them. It shows a mature, tough minded, confident football team that knows how to win.”

Art Briles: â€œI think we are a better team than last year and that’s just the bottom line.”

Bryce Petty: â€œI’ll have to be honest with you, my head is still spinning trying to think about it [the Texas defense]. They threw so many looks at us, coverage wise…I couldn’t tell you what they did on consecutive plays.”

I agree with your takes.

It was a well played game, but there were too many mistimed passes and throws where receivers couldn't extend the play.

I am also dumbfounded as to why Strong even tried that 52 yard field goal. It seemed to go against the gameplan of not giving Baylor extra yardage.

Strong "Every day we go 35, 40 and hit it. We just didn't hit it."

(That's CS after being asked if he considered going for it on 4th down.)

All the "little things" were the demise of Texas today against Baylor.  You can talk about how Swoopes played (or didn't play), but the stats tell the story.  Texas led Baylor in most categories until the 4th quarter.  The incessant and inopportune penalties were deadly for this team today.  Just when they gained momentum from a big play or were on the cusp of scoring....  bad luck struck.

The kicking game needs to be revamped fast and Strong knows it.  Nick Rose hasn't been getting the job done but I don't think Rose gets benched just yet.  He's 3-6 on the season.

Daje played, as we reported he would earlier this morning, but he pulled his hammy running a route.

Here's another interesting quote off my recorder....

Strong was asked about keeping the defense positive, "We know where we are offensively and the players understand."

I want Swoopes to be the guy, but he took a major step backwards today. He has yet to show any real touch on his passes. He has a rocket arm, but still has yet to show he can alter velocity as the play necessitates. He was very indecisive an inaccurate today, and just seems a step or 3 too slow to react. Honestly, from a future building standpoint (since obviously that is what we are doing...building for the future) is it really a bad thing to go ahead and burn Heard's shirt and see what he can provide to an offense desperate to find some kind of answer? Mobility masks a ton of deficiencies, and Heard has that in his game for sure. I don't really buy all the insider comments that Heard is "miles behind" in practice. If Heard comes in and provides any sort of a spark, it would give some clarity that the future is indeed bright on offense as well as defense.

Swoopes is just slow. Speed wise and thinking wise. He really tries hard, but he is not going to be our quarterback of the future. Good arm, but slow decision making and slow afoot.

I thought the OL was much improved today. The RBs ran well. The defense played very well until they just wore out.

Lack of a playmaker at quarterback was a big part of the difference in this game. Mack just left the cupboard bare.

I am afraid it will be the same every game we play.

I will trust Coach Strong to make the decision about Heard, but we can't win with Swoopes unless he really turns it around big time.

Sad.

I think Matt's takes were spot on.  I do feel that this team cannot play a top ranked team and continually shoot themselves in the foot, whether it be with inopportune penalties, not getting a play off in time, having FGs blocked by a DL midsection-AT the LOS, fumbling at the 1 yd line, or giving up huge chunks of yardage on runs up the middle with the game still in question.  Mistakes-mental and physical-are killers.  This is amplified with a young team without much depth.

The frustration with Swoopes from fans is understandable but Heard is nowhere near ready to take command of this offense.

I wish I had a dollar for every UT QB I've seen who looked lost at the same stage of their college careers as Tyrone. Also, the idea of anointing kids who've played nothing but high school ball is just silly IMO. Let me know how many full grown men play defense in high school.

Let us leave Heard on the bench and trot him out for his FIRST game action in South Bend against Notre Dame ! Id that what I am hearing ?

GBT - you know that Heard didn't arrive on campus until summer camp, right?  He wasn't an early enrollee, so the game speed at the D1-A level is totally new to him.  Heard will benefit immeasurably from running scout team offense this fall against our D and spring football.

Why burn his redshirt in a rebuilding year?  We're not going to compete for any championships regardless of the QB.  Don't put it all on Swoopes.  This porous O-Line is holding us back even more.

Swoopes generally exceeded everyone's expectations for four games and had one sub-par game. Play the law of averages.

I disagree Matt, Swoopes looked good in one game(UCLA) in his one victory he missed quite a few throws, at least 3 deep balls that would have resulted in TD's. I know he is all we have, I just don't see the progress yet.

Swoopes has done a fine job at managing games with the exception of the Baylor loss. That is exactly what the coaching staff expects of him, not to be Randall Cunningham out there.  He gave the team a chance to win in all the games he started thus far except the Baylor 2nd half.

Bryce Petty--
"I'll have to be honest with you, my head is still spinning trying to think about it. They threw so many looks at us, coverage-wise…I couldn't tell you what they did on consecutive plays. It's good for us and I really think defenses are going to do that, they are going to throw things at us that we haven't seen before and we have got to get through it. I've got to get better because I can't have games like that, I don't want games like that. I feel like I'm the best in the country, so if you are going to be the best in the country, you've got to be able to decipher that kind of stuff and still be able to hit things. There was a lot of miscommunication out there, but at the end of the day, the ball is on my hands and I've got to put it out there."
