I'll ask again: Why not Gundy?

You know, I wouldn't mind floating a rumor that we are in deed going after Gundy. That way Pickens will go deeper in his pocket to keep his lap dog at bay and the pot that is used to satisfy the street agents and player's families with their hands out will be a little lighter.

If Saban isn't/doesn't happen. And Myer is a no go. He's at the top of my list. I offer him $6 mil + and go up if needed. He's the best coach in the Big 12 and one of the best in the country. Already recruits Texas, etc. etc..... WHY NOT GUNDY, DAMMIT?
Oklahoma State lost to West Virginia, a team Maryland beat 37-0. Why not Maryland's HC?

Now that is an interesting take.

The "Why not Gundy?" probably rings louder today on the 40 than ever before. Can't say his hire wouldn't make me happy. He is a Man!!

He won't come. But if we inquire, it will get him a good raise.

I'm not advocating based on 1 game. The same as I won't throw out a good candidate based on one game. Don't try to marginalize by citing a ridiculous example. Mike Gundy is a damned fine coach that has succeeded over a number of years at a less than traditional power. He's on the verge of a second Conference Championship within the last 4 years. He consistently has his team ready to compete with Texas and OU. They play hard and with passion. We should be so lucky to get a coach like him. Are there others out there? Sure there are. Briles for one is still high on my list. I just think Gundy is more "gettable" at this point than most if not all of those others. Also Gundy is 12 years younger than Briles and almost 20 years younger than Saban. I think he'd do great things at UT for a long time.

In addition to Arkansas last year, A&M came after Gundy before they hired Sumlin.

I think Pickens has now locked Gundy down. The other issue that has been mentioned is not providing an opportunity for a rival B12 coach to turn the position which could be used against on the recruiting trail.

Respectfully, neither Arky nor Aggy is THE University of Texas. That said, I understand the point about recruiting. However, these things can be done quietly. Although we haven't exactly shown the ability to keep a secret. Unless of course the Saban info is all a smokescreen.

Please don't misinterpret that as a slam. I believe the Saban smoke and think there's too much there for it not to be true. My point is simply that if needed there is no reason for a feeler to Gundy not to be deniable.

Between Gundy and Brown, I'd choose Gundy. I consider Gundy a fine coach, too. The question is really what bar Tx should set for a new coach, given the aspirations of the Texas program. Gundy's loss to West Virginia is not a ridiculous / hypothetical example. It actually happened, as did Maryland's 37-0 shut out of West Virginia. It's one thing that the loss was to a superior team or an equally matched team. It's quite another when the loss was to a clearly inferior team, a hallmark of Mack Brown.

Gundy may turn out to be another Nick Saban or Urban Meyer in a few years. But as of now, there are better options based on record and experience.

His agent is Jimmy Sexton....Nick Saban's agent. Not sure if Sexton would be negotiating for two guys for the same job, that would be a conflict of interest for Sexton. In order for Gundy to be a viable candidate for the Texas job, Saban would have to tell his agent (who would then tell Texas) that he is not interested before Sexton can start talking to us.

Regarding Gundy, we might want to wait to see what, if anything, the NCAA does about the allegations at Okie lite as reported in Sports Illustrated. If Gundy knew about any of that stuff, he may get sanctioned by the NCAA. I would not hire a coach that is coming off of NCAA sanctions.

I'm starting to get the distinct impression that if we don't get Saban, it will be an NFL current or ex NFL HC at this point.

Not sure I like that either unless it's a top 3 NFL HC, which I don't think is possible either.

Give it a week and then it will be Gundy. A week after that it will be Briles. A week after that it will be someone else to keep the smokescreen going until Saban rolls into town in mid January

Mora, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Gundy, Briles, Malzahn, Sumlin, Gruden..... the list goes on and on and on.......

Someone should start a wager on this. Who wants to be the bookie? (I don't gamble)

Program has become to big, to profitable and to big a contributor to the academic side of UT to take a flier on a young and up and coming coach.
I know many of you absolutely hate the LHN, which is a head scratcher to me, but it's here to stay and we need a Coach that can leverage that asset to promote UT and get in the minds and hearts of kids everywhere. If utilized correctly, it really is an unfair advantage recruiting wise. Both for Athletics and Academics.
Fine, I get your point, but answer my question, if not saban, meyer, or harbaugh, who fits your criteria?

That was just off the top of my head. Your number is probably much closer to being accurate. I'm hearing from a level 204 source that Johnny Chimpo is the guy and already bought a large oak tree in West Austin.
